In space year 2026, it is *still* illegal to rip a CD you bought with your own money to play the resulting MP3s (or whatever) on your computer. That is not considered fair use.
But if the UK government gets its way (and it will – it has a massive majority, despite winning only a third of the popular vote), AI companies eating all of our creative work for free, forever, soon will be.
Fuck off, Labour.

A magazine I occasionally write for just gave me updated guidelines for screenshots. As of the ’26’ operating systems, they mandate contributors have Reduce Transparency turned ON. Why? Because otherwise the grabs won’t be legible enough.
So we’re now at the point with Apple design where the default UI isn’t suitable for a long-running print publication. Good work, everyone at Apple! Everything is fine dot gif.

One thing as some people get older is a reluctance to do things they “should” already be able to do. I know someone in middle age who refused to learn to swim because they’d have been in a public pool and felt foolish.
I’ve been putting off going on bike rides forever, but have a 10yo. So today I put on my big boy shorts and just got back from only the second bike ride I’ve done since I was about 12. Very wobbly. Not much confidence. But it won’t be decades before the next one. 🚲

I see with ReteoArch on iOS, the “#emulation is illegal” rubbish has clawed its way back into the daylight. Emulators are legal. Yes, many files people load into them may not be legit but that doesn’t make the tech itself illegal any more than it makes e-readers, music players and video players illegal.
Maybe people should concentrate more on encouraging publishers to provide legal routes to play (and buy) old games than spreading rubbish about emulators.

But now imagine Apple swapped out its cool (for the day) iPod ads for one in which an amazing record and CD collection, along with vintage players, are destroyed by a soulless crusher, before an iPod is revealed. I don’t imagine people would have been cheering about that either.

Writing about the C64 now. Opening line: “The best 8-bit micro of all time.” I’m sure that’s a statement that will cause no arguments or problems whatsoever. :D

“without an insect-rich ecosystem, there would be no gardens at all”
A nice reminder for people. Although one I fear too few hear.

@npub1sdu…w074 I mean, you got a free polybag, so that makes it all worthwhile, right?

Finished my day of corporate work. Needed to do something from a mag. Went to grab a drink. Got a great line in my head to kick off an entirely different article. Procrastinated from the thing I was supposed to be doing by writing the frame for the other piece, which I’ve just done a count on and discovered it’s ~50% of what I’m supposed to file, and it all came out in about ten minutes. And it all works.
This is… good? I think?

@npub1sdu…w074 There’s a Lightroom app that has a camera built in. It’s… adequate.

@npub1yyx…qa5g Oh man. I’ve not listened to that in far too long. Higher Than The Sun (dub symphony) always lifts me up too. Really good connections to parts of my life. A couple of Banco tracks manage the same trick.

Adobe just sent Photoshop Camera to a farm upstate. A pity. I really liked that app. https://helpx.adobe.com/mobile-apps/help/photoshop-camera-end-of-support.html

@npub1sdu…w074 Indeed. I’m all for innovation. I like the notion of dedicated devices. But these things lack any reason to exist, beyond making people feel good about AI. Well, until they use them.

Facebook’s current thing of whacking posts from groups I’m not a member of in my feed, in a cunning attempt to have been reply to someone and sign up for them is obnoxious in the extreme. Not a fan. Rating: STOP IT RIGHT NOW out of ten.

Yikes. https://www.theverge.com/2024/4/30/24145838/rabbit-r1-android-app-pixel-6a
I am baffled by these AI devices. There must be some demand. But even the Rabbit shouldn’t get a pass for being “only” $200. “Only” $200 can get you a phone. And that phone will do a bunch of similar things, without needing charging every four hours, and without a UI designed by a sadist.

Feeling a bit frog/lilypad with spring right now. Every time I open my weather app, reasonable temperatures always seem just out of reach. Would be quite nice if that high pressure system that’s been gleefully hurling Arctic air across the UK for ages now would quietly naff off.
