Schöne Geschichte.
"But the VIC-20 is the one that counts. The family has been uprooted twice. The country is still foreign, and the land outside is as hard and clean as a sheet of ice. Economies collapse and people fail you, but the machine is exact. Understand it down to the last register and it will never betray you.
For a boy teaching himself to program alone in the northern dark, correctness isn't a matter of taste. It is shelter."

@nprofile…pyh0 @nprofile…xuw2 keine Ahnung 🤔.

@nprofile…mv7s @nprofile…3tsk so what about those 45° angles in the traces? The left example has more of them, but there're still some in the right example, rigth at the ball pads. As far as I understand it, every angle in a trace is basically a change in trace width and thus a change in impedance. That's why "rounded corners" are preferred, as they keep the trace width constant throughout. I'd think that this would be relevant in the range of 10+ GHz 🤔

@nprofile…wzht that ripple still looks rather fierce, though. Do you have access to a thermal camera?
If the schematic you posted is showing the whole picture already, I wonder how they got away without using any bulk capacitance at all. Merely a single μF in front of each regulator seems questionable, at least. Doesn't look like there's any mains frequency coming through, but the regulator might be on the brink of stability and start oscillating.
I would probably toss those three tantalums and put some 100μF Panasonic FC there 🤔

@nprofile…syqt I have just noticed the opposite end of latency. It is more of a lag, actually. When I am running on really low Mem, like 10kS, the software seems to buffer a lot more waveforms than that. If I change anything on the external input, or even switch the ADC resolution from software, it takes a couple of seconds until the change becomes visible on the screen. Funny thing is, that this is exactly the same when doing single manual triggering: I have to click more than a dozen times until the change appears on the screen. Not sure yet if that's the pico-bridge's fault or the main program.
Does any one of you have a scope ready and could try to replicate this? 1kHz probe cal at 20MS/s and only 10kS memory depth is pretty stark, 100kS still noticeable. @nprofile…yjfz

2025-10-05 16:44:30 UTC

- reply

@nprofile…5zd4 @nprofile…k42g yes, that's possible. If the pass transistor shorts out between C and E you'll have almost the full input voltage appear at the output.
To guard against this, you'd have to place a crowbar circuit at the output, with its trip voltage set a little higher (like 13.5V or so). It will then shunt the voltage to ground and break a fuse that sits in line somewhere upstream of the regulator input.

@nprofile…5zd4 that spike looks like a sudden load step. Nothing out of the ordinary.
That huge ripple might as well be due to how and where you hooked up your scope probe. You'd want your ground lead to be shorter than an inch and placed right next to the tip. Don't run a long hookup wire with a crocodile clip to "some ground" far away, as that will pick up lots of stuff and ruin your measurement.
