So far things that work better on my Samsung S25 than my iPhone 12 mini include:
- same podcast app but the dev has better features for the android deployment
- Manga reader (mihon > paperback)
- Pico-8 (native emulator > port)
Android has a lot of random interface settings I'm not a huge fan of but I'm figuring it out. My 12 mini is dedicated to all my health and chores tracker apps (due to my watch and existing licenses) so it's really more of a productivity thing than ever.

I find it fascinating that people “switch between Android and iPhones” regularly. Like, are you buying the top of the line one every year, or just being like “today is an iPhone day” to make it feel like you have a new phone between two models you’ve had for 7 years.

Folx #onHere recommended that I get a Pilot Kakuno or Twsbi Eco as another starter fountain pen, thank you for that. I was meeting someone, an up-and-coming creator focused on journaling/arts, in person for the first time and coincidentally they were going to get something similar (though, for their purposes, it would be a "beater" pen, as they put it). We bonded a bit over the experience of trying out the different sizes of Eco, and I swapped pens with them in exchange for ink, given that I currently don't own any, and they have far too much. They were surprised at how much they liked a stubby/bold nib as an extra fine user, and conversely, I was surprised with how much I liked the fine as a bold user. The nib felt smoother than the Pilot Preppy and I think it will help to have lettering that doesn't take up as much space when minimizing the number of sheets in a letter. Filling the Twsbi's piston cartridge for the first time was fascinating. I also got a converter for the Preppy, per the other recs I got on here too! I do want to give it another chance.

I recently helped fix a record player at a Repair Cafe and realized that they are super simple inside. They had purchased it for $1. I definitely want to track down a cheap vinyl player now so I can expand my physical library into vinyls, not just CD's. The CD's will satisfy me for now. I've been swapping CD's with my partner's dad, who I share a lot of music taste with.
All of this is a part of me realizing that the answer to leaving Spotify is not just one service: it's trying many things. CD's, Vinyls, Soulseek, live concerts, student radio, Bandcamp, Mirlo

2026-01-22 14:01:07 UTC

I've been listening to CD's more in my car and am trying to be more intentional about listening to artists recommended by friends rather than relying on algorithmically generated radios when streaming. It occurred to me today that similar to a book site like Bookwyrm, I could use MusicBrainz to get metadata and use CritiqueBrainz to leave small ratings and reviews that will give me an outlet for being more opinionated about the music I listen to. I hope I'll be able to find my way to describing what music I actually chose to listen to, found myself enjoying, and why. https://critiquebrainz.org/user/pixelleeto
edit: someone suggested also trying NeoDB and I'd be open to hearing comparisons for people who have tried either musicBrainz or NeoDB stuff!

I went to a local office supply store to try out some pens. The clerk helped me pick out some pens based on my criteria that lined up closely with pens I had in mind from what I'd seen online. I ended up getting a set of two Uniball 207+ pens for $7.50. I was also considering getting a Pentel EnerGel since I did have good experience with the .3 mm and they had a version for .5 mm that felt more similar to a ballpoint experience. The price was about the same but I wouldn't need to buy two. In the end, I decided I wanted to experiment more with the Uniball. I also got a super entry-level fountain pen, the Platinum Preppy. It's better suited for writing in cursive and requires me to be more intentional than I am at times speed writing. I like how smooth the writing is, the Uniball was already quite smooth, and while it may be more watery than the Uniball, it bleeds through less. I am excited to run with these for a bit : )

Hey y'all, I have a friend of a friend who's from my home country of Myanmar. She has been living in the US for several years on a student visa. She was rejected from H1B. I think her company (decent software company) would be open to sponsoring but it seems that that hasn't necessarily always led to success. She has until her student visa ends before being deported. She's also considering non-US countries as back-up plans but ideally she wouldn't have to leave. She is going to try to apply again for H1B.
- Any countries that would be supportive of someone with a tech background from a politically oppressed country?
- Any other general advice for people who may have experienced getting their H1B rejected before?

First of all, I want to clarify some things about fundraising in Myanmar. Many people are still in too much shock to set up formal fundraising platforms. Even for those who have, it is extremely difficult to transfer funds with high transfer fees and bank limits. Still, I cannot recommend donating to large organizations like the Red Cross, those funds are sure not to see the light of day.
I am only sharing links that have been shared to me by someone who has family in Myanmar, either my own family, or my friends. Some of the funds may be linked to Christian organizations due to the presence of missionaries in the country that have international connections unlike the Buddhist majority. I will not hold it against you if you decide not to donate to them.
Facebook is also the most popular social media within Myanmar with international presence. Some organizations may not have information other than on Facebook.
It is very hard to contact people in Myanmar due to the limited access to power and reliable communications as well. If you reach out to these organizations, understand that they might have limited capacity to respond to you. Please be patient.

On March 28th, a 7.7 magnitude hit the home country of my parents. My dad's side lost one house. My mom's side was outside the earthquake zone. Thankfully, they are safe, but power is still down in most of the country and the destruction of major roads disrupt access to food and supplies. Schools collapsed while in session and historical sites have been destroyed. Some of our family friends lost their lives among the hundreds.
I am re-posting thread to clean things up a bit, since I was a bit emotional when I first made them.

I don't have good recs for places to donate at this time. The people are still in shock. It is extremely hard to send money legally into Myanmar. This is an ongoing issue for years and I would warn that most non profits like Red Cross are not reputable and actually trying to take advantage of Myanmar people as a sob story to swindle people from money.
Only look for funds that clearly go directly to people. My mom's friend runs a school that may start a fundraiser. I will share information once I hear from family. Thank you.

After the earthquake in Myanmar, my aunt's house suffered minor damage. Thankfully they are safe and the house is still up. She owns her brother in laws house which fell down, so his family is living with my aunt now.
My family shared reports about how a Chinese school collapsed during classes, a historical pagoda that they used to visit being destroyed, and Mandalay university being on fire. My mom's friend lost his father and aunt.

Friendly reminder to check the expiration date of your COVID-19 test kits, especially if they've been extended by the manufacturer. And if so, it doesn't hurt to label them with the extended expiration date, so you won't have to check again for a bit. If you have a large supply that you don't put much to use, consider seeing if there's any one else in your community that could benefit!

I hate the taste of mint toothpaste and just assumed everyone else hated it too but were bearing with it? It was a problem since I was a kid that made me reluctant to brush. Until my partner informed me that he very much never had an issue with the taste.
Not very surprised when I searched online for non-mint toothpaste and consistently found results in r/autism. Oh yeah, I guess it's a stimulation thing. Mint toothpaste is spicy in a bad way I don't look forward to. Cinnamon toothpaste sucks too.
I ended up finding folx commonly recommend flavored brands like Hello, Boka, Hi Smile, and Marvis.
Hello is the cheapest I've found for <$5 for 4.4 ounces. It's still more than common brands like sensodyne and not travel sized. Need to make sure to get one marked "Flouride" since kids toothpaste is sometimes fluoride free. They have flavors like blue raspberry and orange creamsicle.

- Despite the tale that St. Patrick is responsible for driving out the snakes from Ireland when he converted them from paganism to Catholicism, the reality is that there have never been snakes in Ireland's fossil record.
- Ireland does have one native lizard.
- Another lizard found in Ireland is the "sloworm" (derived from earth wyrm) brought over from Britain, primarily residing in specific areas in Ireland. It is a legless lizard. Legless lizards differ from snakes as they have features such as eyes that can close, external ear openings, among others. One example of a legless lizard in the US is known as the "slender glass lizard". They both share a feature of being able to regrow their tails, though never as long.
- Snakes have vestigial organs that are basically undeveloped leg bones
