Hey Kiwis,
I have some computer hardware for sale. I’m helping a friend off-load what used to be a media server in a desktop tower format. I’ve wiped all the data for them and verified it works with an installation of Ubuntu 26. They don’t need it and just want it sold, either together or in parts.
- 11th Gen Intel Core i5-11500 x 12
- 16gb RAM (DDR5 I think?)
- Intel Graphics RKL GT1
- Roughly 80TB of storage across HDDs and SSDs (5 x 1TB SSDs, 2 of those M.2 style)
If there is more technical info you’d like let me know. They haven’t sorted a price yet, but make a reasonable offer that isn’t silly and I can pass it on. They’re just trying to do some tidying and cleaning.
(Fyi, I may buy one of the M.2SSDs myself, but that’s the best thing to run the OS off of so I won’t take both!)

Ideally, city buses would be free. But NZ moving to card/phone-based payments and a new prepaid card, but no cash is rough for the homeless. Even worse is the prepaid card (a bit of plastic with some sort of dirt cheap chip in it), will cost *TEN* dollars!
That is anti-homeless. If you don’t have an address, you’re going to struggle to get a bank account to have a card. Instead, there’s a $10 additional fee to start using the bus!
(yes, I get there were safety issues having cash on hand. Just make it free, less systems to run & support, less security needed, faster dis-/embarking)

@nprofile…xa9x Good to know, thank you. I wasn't fully clear. The notion is visually displayed, using a font, like an image, but nothing in the source code changes. Sighted users get a board to look at, all others get standard positional notation.
To be fair, the notation is probably horrible to listen to with a screen reader since it looks like this:

Web dev and accessibility people, what do you think about using a `figure` element when the content is text, but the browser will render into a visible image?
In this case, chess notation text that will display as a board without changing the source.

@nprofile…u9pr Thanks for pointing me to the best place to get more info! I know there’s usually a good reason with these sort of challenges, so I’m keen to learn more so I can help.
I had my first PR accepted and merged in this week! 🥳🥳🥳

2026-05-14 23:36:39 UTC

So, @nprofile…u9pr is definitely pretty great, but wow there are some pretty serious problems to tackle with the frontend. My Dashboard, which has 4 cards, loads *23*MB of stuff (mostly JS). The core JS alone (in 2 files it looks like) is over 7MB!
There’s a JS file for the weather widget which I don’t even have enabled. Every app installed seems to load its own JS even when I’m on the Dashboard.
I get that it’s a challenge as it’s sort of an everything platform that anyone can write apps for so you need to account for that, but all this whoopla about the latest version being so much faster, but my poor browser still has to parse over 20MB of JS on the landing page is wild.
It really needs a coordinated effort on their frontend. I’d love to have a chat with a NC developer who can explain why it’s like this and what the challenges are here. It’s a pretty big problem to just jump in as a contributor w/out a more wholistic understanding. (definitely something I’d love to work on though)

Hello, people who do #SysAdmin 👋🏼
I want to get better at this, and more confident at hosting my own services on my own servers (homelab or VPS). Can you point me to any good resources to learn? I feel like I have a decent handle on the basics, but don't know what I don't know.
Here's where I'm currently at:
I self-host (via Docker on Linux) Nextcloud, Immich, Vaultwarden, Home Assistant, Anubis, Forgejo, Readeck, a couple containers for personal “APIs”, and a few static sites. (mostly on the same server)
I can configure UFW, set SSH to be no password/key only, have Fail2Ban kicking IPs off, and have BorgBackup doing offsite rolling backups. Uptime Kuma monitors the high level services, but I don't have other monitoring.
What don't I know here, or should I dig into more than the basics?
Feel free to boost, my circles may not reach far enough.

Hello Fediverse!
Time to look for work! I’m a software engineer / web developer looking for work. 🧑🏼‍💻 Yep, another day, another dev without a job.
I enjoy building focused and intentional software that is fast and frictionless for people. Software should be accessible for the widest group of people, whatever their current capabilities.
Primarily, I focus on the frontend, whether that’s way up front with HTML, CSS, Javascript, or building pages from the server with C#, PHP, or NodeJS tools. But I’m also experienced in the backend layer working with APIs and databases. Let me know what you need and I’ll be honest if I can do it, can learn it, or you need someone else.
I live in Aotearoa New Zealand 🇳🇿 and will take contract or full-time work. As I’m originally from the USA 🇺🇸, I believe I can be employed by companies here, there, or Australia 🇦🇺 without piles of paperwork. That said, tech work can be remote worldwide 🌍, so don’t be shy!
A bit more about me can be found at https://www.philiprenich.com/
Boosts are appreciated. 🙏🏼

Let's say this AI/LLM bubble finally bursts. What then? What does that look like? A few companies go under, but this isn't really going to go away.
Crypto is still here. The web is still here.
So we'll still have data centres, maybe less, maybe smaller. But that means we'll still have scrapers & bots, stolen work, brain rot. There are enough smaller models or local models that code will still be vibed.
Maybe everything not as much. But maybe it just stops being a consumer thing and stays enterprise. And companies don't balk at spending a few hundred dollars per month per employee if it means they "ship faster". That's a drop in the bucket compared to payroll.
I just don't see how a bubble burst really gets us back to place in the software industry where it isn't shitty :(

Well, looks like I’m finally joining the ranks of the unemployed tech workers 🙁 Barring a good size project coming in in the next month or two, my company just doesn't have the work to keep everyone on.
This is fresh. I'll do some proper "Here's what I'm skilled at" fedi hiring posts later, once I've processed a bit more and prepped my CV, etc. But as a quick hit, I'm available for contract work or full time work as a web & software developer. I've also got some experience in server admin. You'll get good, clean, long-lasting work that doesn't have AI garbage tech-debting all over the place.
If you have or know of any work, let me know. I'm available in New Zealand and remote, and can legally work in NZ, Aus, and the USA without visa issues.
(I guess I'll throw on #FediHired even though I'll do some more formal posts later on)

It looks more like a tent city or music festival than camping. More chaotic than just being at home. I would not be able to relax in that environment.

I see it all over for software sites (Signal uses it for their community, for example).
I just find it... very non-intuitive to use and confusing to look at. If the old school BB style didn't agree with you, themes exist? Or was it just hatred of PHP that caused the move?
Honestly, not sure what it is that I don't like, but I've always felt lost on a Discourse forum in a way I never did on a phpBB or Simple Machines forum.

It seems like it's more expensive to pay for compute + object storage + database + all the bits to tie them together, than just a server running a web server and database.
If there isn't a need to scale, do Cloud services make any sense?
(as an aside, why are database servers so expensive? Even MySQL ones that don't require a heftyy M$ license)

I do need to get a setup so I can just run a script and have it install the various things I need - docker engine, cron scripts, etc (stuff that doesn't go into a container)

The comments about anti-social behaviour are silly. Are the disorderly youths breaking the road rules or getting into fights (assuating people) - then you don't need new laws to step in. This and the gathering of gang people is the state just getting worried when the populace comes together for any reason that might move where the power lies.

My niece's boyfriend wants to buy some of my old musical instruments. I met him last year and he's a kind guy. I don't subscribe to the whole "scare suiters off with a shotgun" controlling of young women's love lives, but I was thinking of charging him a song for the instruments.
He's an actor and will know Shakespeare, so will be acquainted with the Fey. He's already given me his name. I think asking him for a song as well will ensure his behaviour without resorting to anything as low as shotgun threats!

@nprofile…fa5p I don't know a ton about MCP, but that seems like apples and oranges in a way. Isn't MCP primarily being promoted by AI shills and Microsoft? That feels like a few noisy entities rather than actual widespread usage. Fediverse is actually used by a ton of different entities. And more importantly, from what I've seen of the fediverse community, it doesn't want adoption (which in this case would be takeover) by FAANG/AI companies.
I would guess places like M$ are making it look like widespread adoption because that helps their bottom line and paying back the money they burned on AI. Hard to do that on the Fediverse.

@nprofile…jc9n @nprofile…tprt @nprofile…evfq @nprofile…6t6n @nprofile…usyd It would be good to have a place to coordinate. I’m afraid this thread will get lost to time.
I’d like to see this place stick around and have some hosting experience, but not on this scale/reliability.
There was a small bit of discussion in an NZ matrix room recently around this when it first came up. I feel like a consortium of some sort may be the most stable way forward?

@nprofile…jpw4 I finished getting this working and detailing how: https://www.philiprenich.com/blog/recreating-search-with-eleventy-v3-and-netlify/

@nprofile…4tpe @nprofile…jpw4 Ooh! New docs! Collapsable sections and *mf-ing underlined headings when they are links*! <3
Can I throw an idea out there? `position: fixed; overflow-y:auto; height: 100vh-ish;` the nav so it scrolls independently of the content I'm reading next to it. On page load, sprinkle a dash of JS to scroll the nav to the heading of the page I'm on (or where I last left the scroll position) so my place/context isn't lost.
But! love the dedication to improving documentation!!

Alright, after lots of trial and error, code fixes from the legend Zach himself, and wrestling with Netlify CLI, I finally have my blog's (client) JS-free search feature working with 11ty v3!
I need to tidy up the code still, but I will update my blog post (or write a new one) with details soon(ish)

I'd say ACT can shove it with standing for local councils, but really, that'll be up to us to show them we don't want their shit politics. Don't let them get a foothold, don't let them start the long game. Keep them voted out.
(also, fuck off, Seymour with your "cycleways and speed bumps are pet projects". They demonstrably save lives and lower infrastructure costs)

Hey 11ty devs, I need a hand. I have a `_data` folder in my input folder, but the JS file inside of it doesn’t seem to be getting picked up. Even if I just have a basic `module.exports = { foo: “bar”}` I can’t access that variable in my templates. Input folder is set correctly and _data/ is inside of it.
What am I doing wrong?? :(

This is probably opening up the can-of-worms, but if I wanted to convert a .Net & MSSQL project to something else (save money on the SQL Server licensing costs and use less M$ software), would you recommend brushing up my 15-year-old PHP knowledge and MySQL or learning something new from scratch like Rust or Go (or insert some other hot-new-language-here)?
Boosts welcome for maximum size can-of-worms

Been looking for a good Notion replacement and started playing with AnyType. Unfortunately, syncing via NextCloud doesn’t work very well due to the more complex data structure (It’s not just markdown files, and that’s fine). I thought I’d self-host their sync service, but it requires MongoDB which doesn’t support RaspberryPi’s architecture 🙁
So.. back to trying to find a good alternative. Let me know if you've found something like!
