So my current assumption of “how the bubble bursts” is as follows…
1.
These various data centre projects start falling through.
e.g. Nscale’s thing in the UK. various Firmus’s plans in Australia. Things Oracle is attached to like Project Jupiter.
They all seem to have dodgy financing and are getting crushed by debt commitments.

Another data centre project looks in big trouble, this one being Nscale.
This was supposed to be the “largest UK sovereign AI datacentre”.
Nscale had an IPO planned, but let's see if that goes any better for them than it did for Firmus.

One thing I notice between Australia and the rest of the world is the view on 'outdoor cats'.
Lots of overseas accounts happily post photos of a cat outside in the world.
In Australia, especially over the last decade or so, an outdoor cat is now considered a problem. Especially in my city (Canberra) where laws are slowly banning outdoor cats.
For us it is primarily an issue of the impact of an voracious carnivore on the existing ecosystem.

Last night I had a dream I stopped "AI".
"AI" was all over, and I packed it up in a little white container, with the letters "AI" written on it, and I put beside my bed.
Then I woke up and stretched my arms, and knocked the "AI" container over, and it started up again, and ran down the hallway.
I thought to my self... "Ah for fucks sake."

As keen as I am to declare the AI industry is a giant con, and that the leaked financials of Anthropic are proof of this ($4b revenue for a $40b loss, and $500b of future spending commitments) ... they were the 2025 numbers. I am inclinded to wait for 2026.
For a few months in early 2026, there was a lot of "tokenmaxxing" which will make a rosier picture, but I also suspect that's well over now.

"AI costs are rising for Australian businesses even as tokens get cheaper"
This is not a very insightful article by the ABC, but it does at least say "AI not necessarily cheaper than workers".
Why are AI costs rising? Because the LLM companies (OpenAI and Anthropic, along with Microsoft's GithubCopilot) did a bait and switch. From the initial highly subsidised subscriptions, to pricing closer to what it actually costs.
I kinda hate the use of 'tokens' as a metric of value or work. They're not intrinsically linked to the success of a work task. Especially the various harnesses which have multiplle passes at trying to improve the quality of the result.
Token prices may be dropping, but that doesn't matter if the model still puts out dubious, unreliable work.

So this annoying article...
"Is there a pending AI ‘debt bomb’ crisis? No. This isn’t Enron 2.0"
Ture, it's probably not fraud. That doesn't mean there's not a crisis.
"AI isn't going away."
LLMs aren't going away, but also the super-intelligence ain't arriving soon.
"...the assets are real and demand for computing capacity remains strong."
Here's the kicker... The assets have limited usefulness at scale outside LLMs. And the demand for computing is coming predominantly from two companies that are burning VC funds, and are deeply unprofitable. Once the VC money is spent, the demand will drop off a cliff.
(And what demand for LLMs there is, may be met by cheap open source or open weight models.)

@nprofile…a4ar Ok... automation, machine learning and algorithms have been with us for years. Those aspect of computing that may be categorised as "artificial intelligence" will hang around, and slowly improve.
However the LLM variant, as it exist in ChatGPT versions or Claude, are unsustainable in that their training and inference costs are greater than what the market will pay for.
They are also, as pointed out by my selective quotes, inessential to modern society.
I hope that clarifies the point I'm making. I'm not too keen on getting into an online argument about it tho :)

2026-08-08 01:52:46 UTC

Decent interview with Cory Doctorow and the ABC.
I particularly liked him calling out the 'AI isn't going away' argument.
"If Donald Trump turned off all of our chatbots tomorrow, what would change? Which government ministry would be unable to do his job? Which important firm would go out of business?"
"AI is not a part of our lives in like an important sense. AI is a part of our lives the way Tamagotchis were a part of our lives. Let's have some perspective here. Especially because there is a real digital sovereignty risk and it's nothing to do with AI."

Meta is reportedly looking to rent out its unused LLM infrastructure.
So, there is...
1. limited demand for LLM services at the cost it takes to provide them
2. already more infrastructure available to meet this demand
This throws a massive cloud over the business case for every GPU-based Data Centre currently being constructed every where in the world.

So I'm reading about Final Fantasy I and this book mentions it uses a 'Vancian' magic system.
Apparently this is from author Jack Vance and the 'Dying Earth' series of books.
It refers to style of "remembered spells" that must be memorised and then disappear from one's mind when cast.
Many nerds will recognise this as the system used and popularised by D&D.
And indeed Final Fantasy I does use this system, before switching to the more generic MP system used in later games.

@nprofile…d2rl Have you been to Canberra yet? Surely there’s an applicable infosec conference in Canberra.

Seriously tho, what happens at 2 am tomorrow morning stays there.

Even my misanthropic heart was stirred by the #NoKings protest images.
Good on everyone who turned up. I hope you can wrest back your society from the authoritarians.

@nprofile…y54t My weird discovery is some popular brands of S&V chips have milk in them.

#CatsOfMastodon I suspect Sunday Pippin is attempting to look into people’s souls, and determine if they are worthy or not.
Chill out Pippin! It’s a Sunday. Let people relax.

@nprofile…jpfa Hopefully you can fix it. Does this unit have a bad motivator?

Take that James McGrath! I wrote a sternly worded feedback comment to the ABC about you being a dingleberry!

Serious comment…
This is the wildest Australian election I’ve ever witnessed.

James McGrath may not be able to verbally explain why the LNP lost.
But his behaviour is a fairly good explanation of why the LNP lost.

In all seriousness, my favourite moment on election night is when the representative from the losing party (on the TV coverage) spends 60 seconds or so actually telling the truth about what went wrong.

Today has been a low key day for me.
Not sure why, maybe the big come down from the big shenanigans yesterday.
Anyway, I think tomorrow will be higher energy. I’m gonna start a riot or something.
(Maybe a little riot… or a metaphorical riot.)
