Comcast is advertising their “WiFi Motion” feature, which is basically “pay us to track when you’re home or away”. I wonder how often they get subpoenaed for that information, or whether they give or sell it without the hassle of a warrant.
While I would never in a million years let this into my home or office, I thank them for drawing attention to their ability to spy on customers this way.

Texas Republicans passed a law saying that social media services have no right to block stupid speech. In response, we at #FRZ added a rule barring Texas Republican politicians from accessing our service.
Today, we received a moderation report that a Texas Republican politician had, in fact, to my surprise, pulled their head out of their ass long enough to figure out how to make a fediverse account. We suspended it, per our rules.
We maintain our sovereign rights against this idiocy.

Way back when, a friend told me to buy a GL-iNet travel router (I got model https://www.gl-inet.com/en-us/products/gl-axt1800) and now I am passing this advice along to you.
1. Hook it to the hotel's Internet.
2. Hook your 43 other Wi-Fi devices to the router instead of paying for each one individually.
3. Tell it to VPN back to your house and router all your traffic, encrypted, through your trusted network (or watch your local streaming TV channels from abroad).
Seriously, just buy one. I won't travel without it.

I saw a guy wearing a nylon shirt and matching cargo shorts, both clean but faded from too many washes, a plain non-matching ball cap, black sneakers, about 30 tools clipped to his belt, and a couple of ID badges. He was a phone lineman, maybe an electrician, perhaps a fiber optic engineer, with a broken in outfit he’d worn to work every day for months.
The perfection nearly caught my breath. Guy dressed like that, there’s not a room in the country where a security guard wouldn’t buzz him in.

Anyone who’s ever worked adjacent to IT knows better than to expect people to read the instructions. Doesn’t matter how clear they are, how publicly they’re announced, how urgent they’re explained to be.
Don’t ever, ever, design a critical process that involves people reading and following instructions. It’s dead on arrival.

@nprofile…ugpy I'm so envious. Our local vet prices are extortionate now after PE ruined it. We needed to have some relatively minor treatment for our dog last year. I did the math and it would have been cheaper to fly first class to a Midwest city, stay at a 4-star hotel, have the work done, and come home than to pay the local vet.
No doubt about it, PE is literally killing pets. Everyone wants to do right by their furry friends, but when you get a quote for $10K, you start to weigh options.

One of my coworkers just seriously asked what a floppy disk is, and I'm going to go take a nap and cry.

Well, that’s brazen.

@nprofile…kgkx I've written an awful version of this at https://dev.honeypot.net/kirk/spamhammer
And I wholeheartedly agree that automated server-level filtering is crucial for moderation. It's not for finer-point arguments like blocking specific words. It's critical for blocking things like the 10,000 nearly identical messages we get telling our users that they need to verify their Mastodon accounts with some phishing site. As the admin, I consider it my responsibility to block those before they're ever seen.

@nprofile…mkea I freaking wish we had that! 😀
Yes, this, please, ASAP!

@nprofile…mkea I never particularly cared for their stuff. It wasn't a good fit for my working preferences. I know a lot of people absolutely adored it, though, and it's a shame to see them throw it away.

I don’t know how much clearer I can be here: don’t use their services. Any of them. Ever. Don’t.

JetBrains will be opting all free IDE users into sharing their program code to train JetBrains’s AI models.
Today I’m blocking JetBrains IDEs in our MDM. Then we can turn it back on for employees who show that they have a paid license and it’s configured to opt out of the sharing.

California is up to our ears with foreign invaders we can't afford, we don't want, and we wish would go back home. They're doing nothing for us, but are committing crime against the locals and draining our resources, sending most of their paychecks back to their distant families without contributing back to our economy.
We don't want you here, ICE. Go back to Washington.

Today I’m trekking the 1.5 mi walking part of my commute with 20 lbs of iron in my backpack. I’m reasonably confident in my ability to get it there with me intact. I’m less confident of my power to schlep it back home tonight.

I wonder what the Qanon idiots are going to make of Musk’s claims about Trump and Epstein. Will they back Trump and decide Musk is a baby-eater who hangs out with Bill Clinton or something? Or will they continue thinking Musk is a believable person and swing against Trump?
I kinda feel like each True Believer will be forced to pick a side in this.

@nprofile…79ya I... honestly hadn't tried that. It's usually cmd-left or cmd-[ in other apps, and it didn't show up in the menus.
Is there a cheatsheet of other keys and their actions? There might be other handy shortcuts I've missed!

2025-06-03 17:25:32 UTC

@nprofile…79ya Please consider adding a "back" menu option. If I click a toot to see its details and replies but want to go back to the timeline, I have to use Keyboard Maestro to click the window at the right place where the < chevron is like to be. I'd much rather use an official keyboard shortcut. Many thanks!

Meta and Yandex are de-anonymizing Android users’ web browsing identifiers https://arstechnica.com/security/2025/06/headline-to-come/
> both Meta Pixel and Yandex Metrica are performing a “weird protocol misuse” to gain unvetted access that Android provides to localhost ports on the 127.0.0.1 IP address.
🎵Burn it to the ground🎵
Meta and Yandex for this creepy, likely illegal privacy violation, and Android’s Chrome for letting browser tabs talk to each other through localhost networking without requesting access.

I had to reschedule an interview yesterday because of some awful news. I just got an email from the recruiter and the person I was going to meet with, containing a gift card for a meal delivery service.
And now I’m bawling like a baby, faith in humanity freshly restored.
There are a lot of good people out there.

@nprofile…mkea I do 3-way merges rarely enough that it's not muscle memory, but frequently enough to wish it was. It's perfect for my needs.
