As someone who works in digital archiving -- I want you to know that this mirrors my own experience. I completed a migration within the last 5 years (hardware / OS / database / app software) and there was a group of data that was excluded by virtue of its age -- the last time data was loaded was nearly 10 years ago.
The client demanded I migrate it to complete the project. They didn't know what it was, so I peeked as some of the data -- and it's all intensely personal stuff. Names, addresses, phone numbers, account numbers, employers, job titles, spouses & co-signers on accounts and more.
When I informed the client, and pressed them to refuse to migrate the data, they acknowledged my concerns, and told me to do it anyway. I forwarded that eMail chain to an eMail address under my control, and migrated the data.
It's an epidemic of private data theft. The rest of the world needs a european-style 'right to be forgotten' law.

I'm wondering if datacentres have changed in the last 25+ years...
When I was going to a datacentre near Sterling, VA -- the building was unmarked, there was no visible 'front door' from the street. When I finally found it, the door was 4" thick, and took a substantial amount of effort to open.
Inside, you were in an empty room with no chairs, the security guards were behind bulletproof glass, and their office was about 3' higher than the floor in the room. There were multiple assault-style weapons displayed on the wall behind them.
You had to provide your name, company, and cage number before they slid down a steel box to put your driver's license and company ID into. They kept both until you returned to leave the building.
I was accompanied by an armed security guard.
The man-trap was a 25' long inclined hallway with 1" pipe spigots pointing down to the floor. When I asked what the pipes were for, he said "Urethane Foam" but didn't elaborate. To get through the door at the top of the man-trap it required a badge, an 8 digit number entered onto a PIN pad, and a biometric hand scan.
When I got to the company's cage, I was told "Don't leave your cage without calling downstairs first." Cell phones didn't work in the building, so they would hand you a wired telephone to plug in inside the cage. I wasn't about to disobey the guy with the gun.
Admittedly, this was the most extreme place I'd been, but I've also been to cold-war-era nuclear bunkers inside mountains of granite, and a small, unassuming building in the English countryside with no windows that I was told could withstand a plane hitting it -- because 90% of the building was underground.

It's a legit question -- my OTHER instance promised clear reporting on finances -- and I contributed generously.
Then the financial disclosures stopped, and after a nearly a year, I stopped my monthly donations. I'm happy to resume contributing when they provide another financial update.
But it's not unreasonable for folks to require an instance have some transparency about how they're funded (and what they're spending money on) so they can be confident their donations are supporting the community.

This is yet another example of why I’m an anti-theist. Only through generations of telling people that they are “god’s chosen people” can you obtain this level of revolting dehumanization.
Only through ritualistic indoctrination can you achieve this level of psychopathy in an otherwise normal human.
(And yes, I know that sociopaths and psychopaths exist, but they aren’t a recognized homogeneous organization with a consolidated and specific, rigid belief system.)

To me, it sounds like they’re losing money on each device sale, knowing they can make the money back after the sale (“The secret ingredient is *crime*…”)
I wonder if any of these sell at a price point that make a compelling argument for buying them to flash custom firmware for some other purpose.

Okay #Gamer #Gamers... A friend's 16 year old is looking to build a PC for #gaming over the holidays... Now, I have a bunch of old PC components lying around... So I have to ask the question... Is an #AMD #Radeon Vega RX 64 or a WX9100 usable for a modern game machine? I remember these as monsters for #OpenCL -- but I don't think I *ever* connected a monitor to them.
Mostly interested in running #Linux for now, but might move over to #Windows eventually...

To me, this just sounds like they bought a bunch of cheap stuff. If you want reliability and efficiency, you need to buy fewer things of higher quality.
If you truly want to spend your whole day surviving, do some backwoods camping. Walk 4km to get 8L of water. Hunt or fish for your protein each day. Chop down a tree and drag it back to camp, then saw it and split it for firewood for cooking. Dig a latrine, a new one each day just to $hit.

The only answer to a request for backdoored encryption is "You first."
Then all the reasons they can't do it are all the reasons WE won't do it.
