Due to a variety of reasons, I recently decided to leave software development. I'd like to pivot into another field, and am trying to figure out my next steps.
Currently, Quality assurance, business analysis, and product are the fields I'm looking at, and I'm curious about the finance, transport, and construction sectors. I'm also interested in speaking with people who have made similar career pivots out of software.
If you have experience with these fields and industries, or feel you could help in any way, I'd love to talk to you. I can do in-person meetings in the Wellington, or I can meet online. I'd be more than happy to buy people coffee.
Feel free to send me a direct message on Mastodon, and I'd really appreciate it if you could boost this post for reach.

Personal aircraft have been viable for decades. They are niche, and have remained niche, because of practical issues related to the cost of training, safety regulations, and airspace management.

I dislike the emphasis that is placed on household solar power systems. It’s very individual, and it exacerbates inequality. Richer people receive more benefit from private solar, and that difference is particularly stark when looking at homeowners vs renters.
I think a system where the wealthy pay less for power, maybe even receiving net income, while the poor are left to depend on purchasing power from commercial retailers, is not a fair or equitable system.
I would much rather see investment in large-scale power generation.

The way “Software Engineers” have approached LLMs is so irresponsible. It makes me sick.

2026-10-03 21:58:23 UTC

It’s interesting that whenever you hear about someone quitting an AI lab, the stated reasons are always aligned with the industry’s internal narrative; It’s always something to do with how powerful the models are, or how transformative it all is.
These people never seem to quit because they’ve become skeptical of the technical approach or claimed capabilities. Solving all human problems with a trillion parameter text prediction model is, apparently, completely reasonable to them.

2026-09-27 00:27:39 UTC

If you give an unreliable computer program the ability to perform arbitrary actions over an internet connection, it will probably do something harmful. This is incredibly predictable, and indicates that the program is either immature or badly designed in the first place. It is not an indication that the program is highly capable, nor that it is out of control.

If you want to use AI code generation “responsibly”, then you should not do it until there are tools and techniques that are proven to work well. Using unproven tools is irresponsible, and these tools are unproven.

“LLMs are just a tool” is a phrase that comes up a lot. It’s strange. A tool can and should be critically evaluated, but people say it as a response to that critical evaluation.
It seems to function as a thought-terminating cliché, rather than a statement of meaning.

2026-07-29 01:25:14 UTC

The right wing in New Zealand predominantly responds to the left’s policy positions via ridicule and insults. They also lie quite a bit. The media is largely complicit in this.
It’s a rhetorical style that undermines political discourse, and that undermining leads to worse governance. Voters tend to make decisions based on melodrama, not rational analysis.
In a functioning system, such a pattern of behaviour would be seen as misconduct, and lead to penalties. Especially if bigotry was involved.

The prime problem with New Zealand’s economy and government is a lack of investment, both public and private. A lot of government attempts to achieve “efficiency” are trying to compensate for this lack of investment. This doesn’t work, because things can’t really get much cheaper.
The local government amalgamation is one such example of an “efficiency” project. I don’t think it’s without merits, but I don’t think the desired efficiency is going to be achieved.

I made a submission on that horrible transphobic bill. It took me two hours. It was difficult because it's badly drafted. The goal is obviously to exempt trans women and girls from relevant legal protections, but the bill doesn't do it very well. That meant I couldn't just state that it legalises discrimination and that's bad, I had to vaguely discuss the possibility it did that, and how that would be bad if it was the case.

I am struggling to understand the USA's actions. They signed an agreement, and I see no reason why Iran's enforcement actions in the Strait of Hormuz violate that agreement.
Attacking Iran based on the attack on the Ever Lovely clearly undermines their ongoing diplomacy, and the current escalation is obviously going to lead to full-scale war.
I can see two explanations. The first is that the USA's leadership believes that Iran will not escalate. That belief is obviously incorrect, and believing that requires either extreme arrogance or outright delusion by those leaders.
More concerningly, the USA may have signed the agreement under false pretences, to temporarily open the strait.
In either case, it's extremely concerning, and I suspect full-scale war will soon resume.

The hypocrisy from the media on the Green’s minor budget error is astounding. They are consistently bringing forward policy that is independently costed, unlike the other parties. What the media chooses to emphasise is that a leaked budget contained an error due to a spreadsheet typo.

The policy does allow people to pause contributions based on "hardship", but this is still inappropriate. The proposed requirements for this are stringent, and people experiencing poverty should not be obligated to satisfy a bureaucracy in order to spend their own money on essential needs.
Additionally, it reduces flexibility that poor people need. Under these rules, people might not be able to use their own money to build emergency funds, or move for better work, et cetera.

I honestly find National's policy on KiwiSaver disgusting. This country has a major issue with low incomes and poverty. Requiring people experiencing poverty to put 6% of their gross income into a retirement savings account is not feasible and will result in worsening poverty.
This is an abhorrent policy aimed squarely at the well-off, insulated from the horrific impact this will have.

@nprofile…vvev That is better on short-term financials and time to deploy, and I think they’re a useful tool. But the equipment is more resource-intensive to produce and has shorter lifespans. Solar is also more intermittent, which reduces reliability and increases costs.
I’m not convinced solar or batteries have better safety, as the impact of production and disposal appears to be under-studied.
I’m not strongly attached either way - All technologies have drawbacks and I’m not capable of performing a comprehensive analysis of the energy system.

I am quite pro-nuclear, and I don’t think it’s a bad idea to eventually add some SMRs to NZ’s grid, assuming that the technology matures.
However, it seems very premature to discuss this before more fully developing the hydro storage potential of the South Island. This is both because that is necessary to evaluate how much nuclear would be needed, and because cost-effective storage is incredibly beneficial to the economics of nuclear power.

This is a disappointing response. Introducing regressions into a mature piece of software that is widely relied on is harmful and damaging. Tridge’s response completely fails to accept that he has caused any damage, and refuses to accept that he is culpable. He clearly feels aggrieved by people pointing out his wrongdoing, and paints them as cruel and overly emotional. It’s honestly quite immature.
A large part of his defense is that he isn’t obligated to do any work on rsync and would prefer to do something else. This is a complete misunderstanding of the critique. Tridge isn’t obligated to do free labour, but he *is* obligated to not do harm.
It’s also very concerning that he took these security reports so seriously. It is not sensible to introduce major changes to a mission-critical codebase due to what may be spam.

It’s remarkable how often stories like this come out. Some person, who has no real idea of what large-scale projects cost, being outraged at a supposedly high cost paid by part of the public sector. The cost is always completely reasonable in context.
A lot of people will take it seriously, because most people don’t know what this sort of project costs. It seriously undermines governance, but it gets votes and clicks, so it keeps happening.

I do think having an open standard for internet payments could be good. Lack of standardisation in the space leads to the market being dominated by a few anti-competitive proprietary solutions; A standard could allow for more competition, including by open-source and community-driven projects. That could lead to lower fees and more privacy.
I do agree the participants in this are questionable, though. I could definitely see it being incredibly skewed towards big proprietary solutions.
I guess we’ll see how it turns out.

The main reason to have free public transport in an energy crisis is fuel conservation, not any sort of cost relief. If something is free, more people use it. The more people use public transport, which is more fuel-efficient than private vehicles, the less fuel is consumed. That reduces the intensity of the crisis.
Many people would not directly benefit because public transport is not practical for them. Some people who are relatively wealthy would directly benefit. I don’t think either of those facts are relevant, because the policy is not being proposed on the basis that it would relieve costs for individuals.

2026-03-25 04:16:47 UTC

The problem with responding to rising fuel prices by giving people money is that it distorts the market. With that distortion, it’s far more difficult to bring demand in line with supply, which is necessary to resolve the crisis.
Obviously, demand management should be done in a way that is coordinated and reflects social priorities. But if it isn’t done, the crisis is exacerbated.
#nzpol

2026-03-19 05:15:04 UTC

You can’t effectively manage a crisis of inadequate supply without managing demand. Of course, managing demand is contrary to contemporary economic and political orthodoxy, so the supply shock isn’t going to be well managed.

@nprofile…yzxf I don’t disagree with that. Public funding should go to the public system, as that is the most efficient way of doing it. The private sector should be privately funded.

2026-02-17 20:33:20 UTC

I am beginning to think that public health systems, like the NHS, Canada’s and whatever New Zealand has, are bad. Since the system is extremely reliant on public funding, lack of public funding under austerity causes serious issues across the entire healthcare sector. Direct political control also makes it easy for the healthcare to be used to oppress minorities - See the treatment of transsexuals and those with ADHD in England.
Mixed public/private systems, like Australia’s and what is common in Europe seem to do better. In a situation where public funding is inadequate, the private sector can absorb that demand, easing pressure on the public system and allowing more people to be treated in a reasonable time. That does shift costs to consumers and exacerbate inequality, but it is a better outcome than extreme delays across the entire system.
It’s also harder to weaponise a private system, since the private sector has more freedom of action.

I think ACC is a bad and inequitable system. Having a massive difference in the support provided to those who are injured and those who are ill for other reasons is unjust. By reducing liability for personal injury, it reduces the incentives to improve safety and socialises the cost of negligence.

The length of the typical summer shutdown in New Zealand is not a problem. Having leave concentrated is more efficient, and those not on leave can use the time for work outside of major projects - My workplace uses it for tech health, for instance.
Also, working less isn't the cause of New Zealand's low productivity. We lack productivity due to years of underinvestment in capital, which is a result of poor industrial policy and bad financial regulation. Luxon's government isn't doing anything about that, he's just scapegoating workers.

The result of this is decline. But decline doesn’t sound good to the electorate, so political figures need to announce plausible plans to reverse it. Starmer’s “AI” crap is the latest.

The L.A. fires are a stunning example of DEI’s failures. Hundreds of years ago, the environment of California was managed by a competent coalition of Native Americans. But, white Europeans thought this was inequitable. They thought Europeans should have an equal opportunity to manage wildfire risk and water resources.
This ideology has been disastrous.

I’m watching the Hikoi proceed along Lambton Quay from midland park. Crowd is huge, and highly diverse. It’s brilliant that so many people are standing for indigenous rights

Considering the amount and frequency of speculative-execution vulnerabilities found in modern processors, I am beginning to think speculative execution is not worthwhile and future processor designs should not use it.

@npub1dn4…cue6 I don’t think that’s causative, it’s just what students do when they’re bored. Getting rid of phones isn’t going to make students any more engaged, they’ll just do something else. Additionally, enforcing this will be a burden on staff and will break down student trust.

Banning phones in schools strikes me as somewhat unserious. Students don’t pay attention in class because the teaching is not engaging and the content is either irrelevant to the student, or the relevance has not been explained adequately. Grades are falling because of underfunding and increasing home stress. Addressing these issues requires substantial reforms; Just banning phones seems to just be a way to signal one’s concern about the issue.
