I once worked for a CEO-my direct boss-who was racist, sexist, & corrupt. There was a shocking incident 3 months into my job, and I told him he was being racist, & would’ve quit on the spot if my visa didn’t depend on the job. I quit as soon as I could.
Facebook just suggested I friend him. His profile pic has a painting of Nelson Mandela behind him. 🤣

This piece sums up much of why this era feels so deeply awful to me: there’s a real, broad hatred of women I never felt so present before (not saying it didn’t exist) plus meanness & supremacism towards others that I thought was fading by time I was a kid.

25 years today since the terror attacks on 9/11.
It was a terrible day, with so many killed that day and even more who have died since as a result of cancers and other illnesses due to breathing in toxic air and fumes.
The broader negative geopolitical impact - so many innocent people killed in the “war on terror”, the erosion of privacy and civil rights protections, the long tail of a rise in hate, division and loss of democracy.

Found this piece smart & well-done. Much of what we criticize as degeneracy-making a living as an influencer/on OnlyFans/in crypto, or giving up all ambition & scraping by-is conspicuous despair. We’ve gone from hedge phase to speculative to Ponzi.
But what will come next? Will anger & frustration at a rentier system too tilted towards those at the top just be scapegoating of the other/immigrants (as we see), or will we push for structural change?

@nprofile…5rsp as somebody from the U.S. living in Spain, I wouldn’t be at all surprised if the U.S. is involved in some way.
But this is also simplistic.
There are complicated relations between Spain and Morocco, and Pedro Sánchez just met with Algeria (Morocco-Algeria relations are bad, not just complicated), and something similar on immigration though at smaller scale happened in 2021 that Morocco turned out to have facilitated.

@nprofile…m7kv haha that’s funny. When I first moved to Valencia from NYC, I saw three people (not in same group) in one day wearing a shirt supposedly from a bar in Brooklyn. I was baffled how it could be so popular that three random people in Spain knew the bar and I had never heard of it. I later saw the shirt at Brandy Melville or Springfield. The bar didn’t exist lol.
That’s what I expected today. But when I asked him, he was like, “no español” & I switched to English.

@nprofile…drtr it definitely affects my own happiness. I can’t be numb to my country turning into a dictatorship and inflicting pain on the entire world. Also, frankly, many actions and freedoms are being reduced or eliminated by this - what one posts on social media, what jobs one gets hired for or promoted, friends at risk of immigration raids.
Many companies are doing basically anti-DEI, purging more women & Black people (sometimes other groups too). It deeply affects everything.
