i wish drew would have named his project anything other than AlpineBSD, because while it clearly draws inspiration from Alpine, and uses some of the same tooling, it otherwise has nothing to do with Alpine itself

I had a dream where a terror cell kidnapped my partner for ransom, so I broke into a military base and attempted to hotwire a mech, but I didn't know how to do it, and so I typed in "how do I hotwire a mech" into Google and it just kept giving me slop instead of instructions on how to hotwire a mech.

I will begrudgingly concede that Germany's obsession with vending machine stores ("e-kiosk stores") is neat

2026-09-24 17:05:47 UTC

my thoughts on Aachen so far: as soon as we got off the train we saw border police checking passports of brown people, it took over an hour to find a restaurant that both myself and my fiancé found acceptable (e.g. was not unhealthy fried food and also open), there was a store unironically selling DSL in 20 fucking 26 like it was a good thing and our hotel room has a fucking IoT smart lock with a fucking PIN code on it.
also, weed here got legalized in the most useless way possible.

maybe i should build something like omarchy that isn't, you know, omarchy

2026-08-31 15:55:07 UTC

apparently thinking copyright is shit makes me an AI lackey. good to know. *plonk*

2026-08-30 08:45:41 UTC

outside of the political argument, the reason why i am opposed to GenAI in the commons is because dependency effectively serves to *freeze* the commons as it is today
models are effectively a lossy encoding of the present
this has the advantage that it could, perhaps, raise an inexperienced person's output to that of the median level of expertise in their field
*but* it will not let either the person, or the commons itself, grow
this is why i hope that the end state is that GenAI is not allowed in alpine, even if it unfortunately means that some decide to leave
but... i will respect whatever the outcome of the process is
(again: still not sold on any moral arguments involving copyright though, but of course i encourage rightsholders to sue if they can prove their work was infringed)

2026-08-30 02:34:02 UTC

I should just go take the ham radio licensing test and get a license

2026-08-30 02:04:35 UTC

though I will concede I once made $12,500 from a settlement because somebody sampled my work without clearing it. after taxes that turned into a used car which blew up a couple years later.

2026-08-29 19:34:50 UTC

fwiw the copyright arguments about GenAI do not hold water with me. copyright is the tool of the noble classes, and should be abolished. the fix is, and has always been, to abolish copyright.
what arguments *do* hold water with me are the political ones: commercial GenAI represents the greatest concentration of money & political power our generation has ever seen.
my arguments *against* GenAI in alpine, and in my own projects, are based on a risk analysis of that concentration of power: as maintainers we cannot protect our autonomy, nor our projects' sovereignty, in an era where we become dependent on GenAI. the people who control our access to GenAI technology will, instead, be the person who exercises total control over FOSS projects which embrace GenAI.

the tl;dr on that exploit (which is novel research) is that AMD fucked up and made the memory controller configuration registers unprivileged, so you can just reprogram them from ring 0.

pkgconf code of conduct has been updated: https://github.com/pkgconf/pkgconf/blob/main/CODE_OF_CONDUCT.md
- humans are now expected to follow the current version of the contributor covenant
- organizations are not only expected to follow the contributor covenant, but may be organizationally banned if they attempt to pressure the pkgconf maintainers
i will not be bullied by piles of matrix multiplications

2026-07-28 02:50:58 UTC

to be absolutely clear: pkgconf, or any of my other foundational projects, will never participate in ANY program that takes away autonomy from maintainers.
so, in very simple words: the akrites project can do whatever the fuck they want, but if they approach me with some AI slop 0day and tell me I have a week to fix it, I will tell them to fuck right off, and if they do anything other than fuck right off, I will probably be suing them.
