Finally turned attention to getting Immich up and running tonight. I like it, seems snappy enough with tens of thousands of photos imported.
The Immich website has a handy form driven page for generating a docker compose file so it took like 30 seconds to get it running once mutated to follow my way of doing things on my server (persistent storage, naming, cert proxy, etc).
I struggled a bit with using the Immich command line tool to import my photo collection and in the process of trying to figure out why --recursive didn't work, stumbled upon the immich-go project on github. It's also a command line tool and works very well; immediately was able to recursively import photos, etc. Compiles cleanly on Alpine Linux (ofc, it's just golang).
Immich-go has a migrate function that allows you to connect to one Immich server and copy the files to another Immich server (but no 'delete source' as far as I could tell).
I set up a second Immich instance on a different port and started to use the migrate function to finally start moving all the photos of my computer electronics and vehicle technical projects out of the whole household's photo collection. My wife will appreciate that. Ha. Managed to split out 2026-2025, only ~25 more years to go. Ugh.
Anyway, Immich (the server) and Immich-go (the CLI tool) are cool. Recommended.
Fun!

I guess I hadn't looked at photos since migrating to Alpine Linux lately.
Does anyone have HEIC (i.e. Apple) formatted images working correctly under Alpine?
I've installed libheif, kimageformats and anything remotely libheif related in the repo but Gwenview still doesn't display HEIC images. Neither does Shotwell.
I installed Ristretto to compare and it also doesn't display HEIC images.
GIMP works as does Darktable.
Dolphin displays the thumbnails properly but the preview pane doesn't work.
Ideas? Kinda pulling my hair out and out of options.

Was at the "local" computer store last night (Canada Computers Kanata) and while searching for what I was looking for I stumbled across the keyboard display.
The keyboard I've been using for couple of years has been an e-waste thingy lying around from an old Dell pre-built. It's serviceable and perfectly fine but...
The Logitech G-something-or-other that I had before that was too expensive given the short lifespan it had so I never got around to replacing it with like-for-like.
Anyway, I saw a really cool looking "cheap and cheerful" Chinese doo-hickey and rolled the dice (DAREU EK106 Pro).
It has a great feel and seems like decent build quality for C$66. It feels better than the Logitech too (materials, design). It comes in different colours also.
It's always hard to tell if brands you don't know in your local store are worth a damn but I give this brand and model a thumbs up. I really like it after pounding on it all morning.

Thinking about a new domain+project...
Anyone have the TL;DR; on self hosted fediverse software?
Mastodon vs Snac vs Pleroma vs ?
I'm looking for something that is super low maintenance and lightweight / easy on resources but as full featured as practical within those constraints.
Something easy to tune re: post lengths and media types would be cool too. A "text first" platform is desired.
I've run Mastodon in the past and it's like fishing with nukes for this use case.

Spent a lot of time today playing with OPNSense (err, fighting - a while back my whining about not getting along with networking was no joke).
Eventually got what I wanted to work to actually work: OPNsense as an exposed node inside a Bell Giga Hub network and routing/NAT'ing to a dmz host hanging off said exposed node. But omfg, I suck at this stuff. It's painful - be glad you can't watch me work. Ha.
Aaannyyyywwwaaaayyyyyy...
If you haven't already upgraded to the latest OPNSense (26.7), you may be surprised by some of the quality of life GUI clean up and more impressively the sped up boot time. On my N150 based box it boots 'super fast' like a normal PC compared to the old fashioned, slow thing it was doing before. No hard data to share, just a seat of the pants anecdote.

If one say wanted to move a ZFS root pool from a Linux host and re-install as a root pool on a FreeBSD host, is there anything "special" that needs to be done beyond the standard export/import type tutorials out there?
I mean, beyond mounting the rpool initially from the install media and deleting everything outside of /root and /home I mean?
Backups are verified; just trying to save the time involved for rebuilding ZFS under FreeBSD (vs import) and restoring TBs of data.
Anything special or considerations about the Linux -> FreeBSD movement of the pool?

@nprofile…hth5 That's interesting.
I just "unmothballed" my old N100 based router (SZBox) and installed Alpine on it.
Pkg power use in btop says ~1.7W but the Kill-A-Watt says just under 13W. This is at idle.

I've been running two degraded ZFS arrays for the last few weeks (Debian host).
Yeah, I know. Whatevs.
One of the pools was basically "scratch" backup space and one of the spindles died (breaking the utility of the mirror). Pulled the drive, wiped the remaining, put back in service with minimum fuss as a single drive. I'll throw another spindle at it when drive prices drop again.
The other array had the SSD cache die and it's been chugging along fine ever since. Not a big deal, but from a "experience" point of view it "feels slow" like a working md array.
New SSD arrived in the mail so that'll get sorted sometime today/tomorrow.
So, what's this post about?

@nprofile…vf35 As a fairly "hard core" car dork I am finally prepared to buy an electric car as the next daily driver appliance.
But I don't know if I'll be able to bring myself to do it.
Modern cars are rage inducing due to the terrible infotainment systems and dangerous active safety supports.
If every time I get in the car the first step is to turn off all the nanny systems then I'm not sure I'll be able to do it.
The newest car we currently own is 2016 GTI (wife's toy summer daily and autocross car) and that car has a dangerous accident avoidance system that can be turned off and stays off between restarts. Thankfully, our 2016 Touareg is of the older generation and doesn't have any of that nonsense on it. All my 'fun' cars are much older but I don't drive them in the winter time since we are in the rust belt. Getting into my MR2 is like a breath of fresh air. At the moment doesn't even have a radio in the dashboard. Ha.
ABS and traction control were great additions to every day cars. Beyond that the systems are intrusive and sometimes dangerous if they actively affect a car's velocity IMO.
Looking at the number of responses in your thread I think you struck a nerve. Ha!

There's one last thing I need to get my head around with respect to using FreeBSD jails as a replacement for docker/podman.
I generally configure containers as totally ephemeral. Any data or individual files that a container uses, and that I care to keep, resides outside the container. It is linked inside via volumes defined in the run shell script or compose file. In some cases even dumb things like root's .bashrc gets linked in so that nuking a container doesn't lose the shell history the next time something needs hand fettling (mediawiki, maintenance scripts, composer, bootstrap, and friends - yes, needs more automation).
Any time a container gets restarted, step one may be to delete the container (and associated volumes it creates), re-pull latest and instantiate fresh. This is pretty typical for Jellyfin for example.
Also, working this way means that the entire backup process can exist outside the container volumes and nothing redundant in /var/lib/docker needs to get backed up.
Anyway, I need to figure out how to achieve something similar under FreeBSD jails. I'm assuming there is something in ZFS that provides a similar type of functionality during jail startup but haven't dug into it yet.
Then there's the 'correct' and easy way on how to upgrade the software inside a jail (os components and services the container runs) that needs experimentation on my side. Some scripting to do.
Jails seem much more elegant but there is lot of old cruft and 'finger memory' to work around. Ha. A lot of stuff is pre-wired and ready to go for regular usage in Linux containers in comparison, I think.
The journey continues.

More monkeying around with OpenBSD. I spent a bunch of time getting LXQt working but the themeing was taking too much time so I threw more ram at the VM and installed KDE. The goal was to learn about OpenBSD, not LXQT. Ha.
Lots of the standard apps are there in OpenBSD but I need to find out how to get Librewolf and Waterfox going. Having done zero research, I'm assuming I need to compile from source.
I saw an article out using "Molly" as an alternate Signal Messenger client (xn--gckvb8fzb.com/if-you-must-use-signal-use-molly/). May try it in the future.
The KDE Plasma version is 6.4.5. IIRC KDE is stopping X11 support so I will need to figure out something else I guess. I've seen threads about Wayland on OpenBSD but didn't go down the rabbit hole yet. What little I read implied not ready for prime time.
The VM feels pretty snappy even though the QEMU agent doesn't really help with video options. This is using the VGA driver setup to get a decent resolution.
I really need to get this Jeep back on the road. I miss it.

Sometime around 2017 (IIRC) I got nostalgic for a little "netbook" type computer and decided, for some reason, that an HP Stream 14 would scratch that itch.
These are really low spec machines, even for 2016-2017. It came with Windows 10 and the first Windows Update basically filled the disk and effectively bricked the device. LOL!
I installed Linux on it after that (ofc) but didn't really use it much. So slow....
I was digging around in my service manuals library this evening and stumbled over it in a drawer of files... for some unknown reason it was in the drawer.
I started it up thinking it was still running Arch from back before Covid and might be entertaining to try to get it to update to the present.
Hmm, Alpine 3.21 boots console but sway is installed. Weird, no recollection of doing anything with this machine 12-18 months ago. "I'm not saying it's aliens..."
Ok, Alpine updates to 3.23 without issues. I'm not much of a tiling window manager person so I installed Plasma. Bad idea! With 4GB of ram and an afterthought of a CPU and storage it doesn't run very well at all.
Installed LXQt with labwc and it runs great! Tweaking and themeing to come. (Hi @nprofile…2nsa 👋 )
Not sure what I'm going to do with this machine but currently it is pretty usable for simple stuff. Screen and keyboard sucks, pretty close to e-waste. Lesson: ~$200 (retail) laptop is about as good as you would expect a $200 laptop to be. Ha.
