@nprofile…4fmn i'm kind of annoyed at the portals cuz we had a wayland proposal for an equally powerful api in wayland floating around, which nobody really gave attention
and around the time global shortcuts got in portals, i also had picked up that proposal and improved it, some discussion happened, then i got too busy
still have more improvements to do to it, but that won't come soon as well, i'm overloaded

2026-07-21 00:40:36 UTC

@nprofile…4fmn being independent of windowing is kind of not really meaningful, though
programs still need to know to talk to the windowing system for every other kind of gui input and output, having this one kind of seat input separated makes little sense and just forces the windowing system and the client to talk via a side channel (in addition to the main channel, wayland or xorg) for no real reason except "portals are already there"

2026-07-18 13:40:01 UTC

it's kind of depressing to me that the one major project i lead is kind of linux only due to every other major unix-like being a full OS over a kernel + components
linux going to shit, people start thinking about trying a *bsd, and openrc does support a few *bsds, but every single one ships with it's own service manager and i don't think no one would seriously non-experimentally use openrc there
the only projects that could be realistically and usefully ported, are stuff that i never even got to an mvp (wayland compositor & clients, irc software)
i'm awful at developing things tbh, anything i start goes nowhere, the only reason openrc is meaningful while being related to my name, is because i took over maintainership of smth that was already established
and now i have nowhere else to go with it, and scared what i'd be without it

2026-06-20 15:39:06 UTC

i might just give in and get a single-hosed portable ac...

2026-06-19 19:36:37 UTC

honestly unless i missed something, i really don't get the lack of PATH_MAX in hurd
like, sure, the idea makes some sense, there's no inherent limit to a file path, any limit can be worked around by dirfds and relative paths, but the point of PATH_MAX is not a absolute limit, but a relative one!
a limit applied to syscalls because you really don't want to accept any arbitrary length in a input string and hang there parsing a 5 gigabyte string from a malicious program or smth
so either gnu hurd would have it's translation server hang on gigantic paths, or it has a PATH_MAX but pretends it doesn't

2026-06-19 19:27:57 UTC

i should buy a portable ac or smth

@nprofile…8m52 convenience, that's all and there's a reason most distros either have a similar thing (gentoo guru, fedora copr), or tried to copy arch (debian DUR/MPR which for some reason decided to try porting PKGBUILDS to debian via a makedeb tool, now unmaintained it seems)

2026-06-16 14:03:34 UTC

imho "users should check the diff!" is kind of insane cope to justify not having a slither of moderation
meanwhile gentoo's guru manages to provide a user repository where committed ebuilds are at least reviewed over-the-top before merging
it's still not fully trustworthy, so it does get ~keywords (meaning each package from guru needs to be explicitly accepted), which is good, as "users shouldn't ultimately trust" doesn't mean "there's no need for any kind of moderation"

# is not an operator and instead is handled during word delimitation itself, as a low priority step so appending # to the current word (if there's any at all) has a higher priority than discarding # comments
aka operator behavior is consistent but the comment # isn't an operator :3

> Why does the player have the information necessary to see through a wall if it should be impossible from their position?
sound effects, which need a source position to be simulated properly, and lag/high-ping mitigations
modern games don't send info when it's impossible for any interaction to happen, but they do send it earlier than strictly necessary so that gameplay experience isn't broken by network latency spikes
the best solution for this though, imo, are small to medium community servers like we had before -- in those, cheaters are much more easily caught by people and kicked out

i'm not a fan of a law requiring a specific controller layout at all, everything would become an xbox controller
if we have to have it, then i'd rather it be at most require adaptive icons in the ui like how steam does it, changing the displayed layout based on the controller being used, and nothing else
