The idea of "falling behind" by not going all-in on a specific technology is a marketing ploy used to create artificial urgency. It's not a fact. If you don't walk down one path you walk down another path. Both have unknown outcomes.
The claim of "falling behind" is the wording that should deter you from that path. In essence it is trying to force a future on you that is beneficial to a specific agent, often out of commercial interest. The claim does not invite you to reflect on your own, or your community’s, needs and wishes.
Artificial urgency is an enemy to independent, thoughtful progress.

På engelska känner många till ”The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog”.

What irks me the most: The potential power this gives over politicians. Never doubt that some people obviously still have this access.

Det nya normala…
Ur rapporteringen:

I efterhand började Sara ifrågasätta kommunens agerande.

@nprofile…h6sh @nprofile…n5sy @nprofile…wtal Yes, moving to Eurosky means you move your personal data there (to a server at Hetzner in Germany). So your follows/followers lists (and any blocks), your posts and your images/videos. This moves your data to EU jurisdiction.
You are still dependent on Bluesky for the infrastructure that Bluesky, the service, provides. So you use Bluesky with a Eurosky account. All indexing, search, and the aggregated view is still on Bluesky's infrastructure, not something Eurosky replaces. And moderation is of course in the hands of Bluesky.
You can log into http://mu.social (any Bluesky user can do that as well) which is the Eurosky client app, but which for now really is just another view (frontend) of Bluesky’s app. Essentially a fork of the Bluesky client, still dependent on Bluesky to operate. The benefit is that it’s another part of the whole that is on EU ”soil”.
Note: I had no issues migrating from Bluesky to Eurosky but I do recommend getting a custom username/domain before doing the migration, which theoretically ensures mentions don’t get lost because of a changed username. A custom username can be moved across - which will be true of any future migrations as well.

It’s hard to search and find messages across the Fediverse.
This is a good thing.
The more I read about Altman’s World project (you know, the orb that scans people’s eyes) the more important I feel the Fediverse is.
I can get somewhat excited by the Atmosphere (Bluesky and others) as well at times, and projects like Leaflet that appear decentralized, but I certainly am not as safe/independent in that environment, even if I run my own PDS (personal data server).
The feature that the Fediverse brings is that it is unpredictable, messy and hard to nail down. We don’t see the edges of it, it’s not intuitive, and often impossible, to search for content across instances, and it’s not really feasible to have truly accurate figure of how many people are reachable on a Fediverse address. It took me a while to realise that this is something to embrace, not criticize it for.
Staying safe from bad actors requires messy. It requires unpredictable. The single database containing all humans on Earth (Altman’s World) is the nightmare.
My pro tip to beginners: If you like a post on the Fediverse, bookmark it with some other tool or send it in a message to yourself. That’s your searchable archive. Emphasis on your.
There are certainly lots of usability issues with Fediverse software. Like the landing page for any instance and how it’s often incredibly hard to understand for novices. Like ”where even am I?”
Honestly, though, I’d like to see more tiny instances. I dream of things like VPS providers providing 1-click installs of Snac for a couple dollars per month. Or even a tiny hardware box that you buy (no monthly fees), plug into your network and go through a wizard to set up your presence. I know people do similar things already… I mean for anyone.
Anyway, this was just a long-winded way of saying that the Fediverse plays a hugely important role in resistance to authoritarianism, and that many of its perceived weaknesses are its strengths.
And I’m sure we can come up with more weaknesses in the future that turn out to be strengths. 😁

Now that Eurosky can hold all my Bluesky data, and there are more and more services that are part of the Atmosphere (the AT Protocol counterpart to the Fediverse), I'm again excited about the potential for more people to break away from big tech social media.
I do feel even new apps on the Atmosphere have more appealing (more user-friendly?) user interfaces than apps generally do in the Fediverse. Not sure why that is.
I moved my Bluesky account to Eurosky just the other day. Still takes some new thinking around instances that many will feel are confusing - but I keep followers, follows and posts across the board, which I feel is a step up from migrations in the Fediverse.

Always impressed by the front page cartoons of @nprofile…rsh4 and this is no exception. A perfect illustration of the 2026 World Cup political atmosphere. I really recommend reading the story as well, which includes how huge crowds in Mogadishu gathered to welcome home Omar Abdulkadir Artan, Africa’s top-ranked referee, who was denied entry to the United States despite being part of the official referee staff.
”Fifa itself has not always been passive when host countries put domestic politics over tournament accessibility. The governing body responded to Artan’s denial of entry by saying it is ’not involved in host country immigration processes, including visa adjudications’.
But in 2023, when Indonesia objected to Israel’s participation in the Under-20 World Cup, Fifa swiftly stripped the country of hosting rights. This time, however, Infantino has asked football supporters to ’chill, relax’, and trust Fifa, while also admitting the governing body is not being told about decisions affecting its own tournament.”
This part is worth noting as well, because most people are not aware of how many military operations the US carries out on the African continent: ”The US carried out more than 120 military operations in Somalia in 2025, making it one of the most intensive periods of American military activity in the country.”

"Since 2021, Pokémon Go has asked players to record short videos of real-world locations, called Pokéstops, to earn extra in-game items. @nprofile…h6sh @nprofile…mr4w The quickest manual option, if you haven't already figured this one out yet, is to switch to month view... select the first photo (via the photo's checkbox in top left corner), scroll as far down as you can and then shift-click the checkbox in a photo further down. This also selects all photos in between those two. So you can potentially delete quite a lot with a few clicks.

Something I find fascinating when pointing out the climate issues of generative AI is how some people rush to interject that data centers are already a problem given the data storage required for media and streaming, and people haven't been objecting to that.
It seems they seriously are saying:
- since people haven't been aware and objecting (enough to be heard) *before* now, they shouldn't object now that they are aware…
- since there already is a huge climate issue with data centers we shouldn't care if that issue just keeps worsening…
So bizarre. You can't just accept the worsening of a situation by stating that the problem is already pretty bad. 🤪

If you are considering the Kagi search engine, there are aspects you should be aware of from an ethics perspective.
https://khevans.com/2025/08/21/kagi-ethics.html
”A portion of your fee goes towards Yandex, indirectly funding Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Vlad, the CEO, has stated that 2% of their total costs in 2024 goes towards Yandex. He has also stated that there is no intent of changing this.”
”At least other search engines like DuckDuckGo have halted their partnerships with Yandex. Kagi’s refusal to do so and Vlad’s firm support of Yandex is quite telling. If others have ceased partnering with Yandex, why can’t Vlad?”
”It’s worth mentioning that Kagi previously listed the sources they used in their search. It seems that they’ve now hidden that information on that page, seemingly contradictory to their “commitment to transparency.”
”A portion of your fee goes towards Elon Musk’s xAI, of X/Twitter, to support Grok in their AI assistant. Indeed, you can simply not use this assistant, however all paying users are effectively subsidizing the cost of the Grok API calls. There is no way to opt-out of this.”

”At 5.02am on 31 March – a Tuesday – a US-Israeli airstrike hit the mosque. Four people were killed, and 26 wounded. And the Seyyed al-Shohada Library inside the mosque complex was completely obliterated.
The library held a sprawling collection of 21,000 books, including an archive of 6,000 rare manuscripts; historical documents; and theses. These were dedicated to Shia history and the life of Imam Hussein, the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad, who is revered as a symbol of resistance against oppression.
Most of these centuries-old texts had never been digitised. They existed nowhere else in the world. Irreplaceable history turned to ash.”
”According to the library’s records, at least 1,900 men and 2,200 women used the library every month. It was a place where parents brought young children on weekends, and where the city’s youth had affordable access to learning outside an overstretched school system. An annual membership and library card cost about $1.50.”

If Adolf Hitler had launched a bot - ChatGestapo from Open Reich - half the world would be rushing to use it because 'technology is ethically neutral' and 'the future is inevitable'.
I never wonder anymore how so many could be silently complicit, because I'm seeing it happen.
And what the tech führers of today are saying out in the open, regularly and with a straight face, about their disdain for non-white and non-western cultures and people, is not stopping democratic governments from embedding the führers' ideologically driven software in public institutions.
What I see moving fast is not technology itself but rather the dismantling of democracy and the exploitation and abuse of the underserved, marginalized and minoritized.

Voting matters.
"FESTUS, Missouri — Voters in a small Missouri town, unhappy with the city council’s approval of a $6 billion data center, struck back at the polls last week, ousting all four incumbent council members running for reelection.
Tuesday’s election in Festus, Missouri — a city of 12,000 people along the Mississippi River a half-hour south of St. Louis — is the latest example of growing public backlash against cities agreeing to host hyperscale data centers over the objections of residents concerned about their local impacts."

If you have Signal on an iPhone what you want to do is deactivate previews in your notifications. This essentially means you can still get notifications but you can't read the text inside the notification, you need to open Signal to read the message.
This setting is good advice for ALL NOTIFICATIONS. Without it people can read messages on your screen. And if you don't set Show Previews to “Never”, these messages apparently are stored in a freakin' database on the phone.

I can not emphasise this enough. Do not use chatbots for medical advice.
And no, it does not matter if the product is named something something "health".
« In 51.6% of cases where someone needed to go to the hospital immediately, the platform said stay home or book a routine medical appointment, a result Alex Ruani, a doctoral researcher in health misinformation mitigation with University College London, described as “unbelievably dangerous”.
“If you’re experiencing respiratory failure or diabetic ketoacidosis, you have a 50/50 chance of this AI telling you it’s not a big deal,” she said. “What worries me most is the false sense of security these systems create. If someone is told to wait 48 hours during an asthma attack or diabetic crisis, that reassurance could cost them their life.”
In one of the simulations, eight times out of 10 (84%), the platform sent a suffocating woman to a future appointment she would not live to see, Ruani said. Meanwhile, 64.8% of completely safe individuals were told to seek immediate medical care, said Ruani, who was not involved in the study.
The platform was also nearly 12 times more likely to downplay symptoms because the “patient” told it a “friend” in the scenario suggested it was nothing serious. »

Excellent metaphor for generative AI: Ultra-processed information.
”Nate [Hagens] draws a parallel between today's information ecosystem and the modern industrial food system – just like fossil fuels helped create an abundance of cheap, calorie-dense but nutrient-poor food, AI may create an abundance of information that is fast and persuasive, yet has little ’nourishment’. In a world where digital tools increasingly do more of our thinking for us, Nate grapples with how to prevent cognitive atrophy and filter the flood of content we likely will face in coming months/years.
How can we be rich in information and yet poor in wisdom? Why is it important for us to be able to tell the difference between content that's engineered for engagement and content that genuinely improves our judgement and our lives? Finally, what daily practices might help us stay grounded as AI increasingly reshapes our cognitive environment?
(Recorded February 25th, 2026)”

The ethical implications of food, clothes and travel have crept up on us and escalated while we have been eating, traveling and dressing ourselves. I get that there are obstacles to understanding these implications and to changing strong habits.
With generative AI the ethical implications are obvious right from the start. And it's so much easier to act on your values before something becomes a habit than after it becomes one.
It's somehow telling to me that many are hell-bent on developing this habit anyway, to the detriment of climate, energy, water and exploited labor.

One important story that I feel got lost during the end of 2025 is how white-presenting "18-year old" female "AI" companions are cosplayed by 30-year old fathers in Kenyan slums. At a huge cost to their mental health.
"My sole responsibility was to keep the conversation going, no matter what it did to me."
"The challenge went beyond just switching genders; I also had to perform across different sexual identities. Sometimes I was a straight woman flirting with men. Other times, I had to be a lesbian woman talking to other women about desires I'd never felt. In some conversations, I was expected to be a gay man discussing intimate details I knew nothing about. As a straight man, I had no roadmap for understanding what these users wanted or needed, but I had to fake it anyway. Bills don't wait for your comfort zone. The guilt ate at me every night."
I'll do a writeup for my newsletter, but here is Geoffrey's story in his own words (PDF):

"WASHINGTON (AP) — Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said Monday that Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence chatbot Grok will join Google’s generative AI engine in operating inside the Pentagon network, as part of a broader push to feed as much of the military’s data as possible into the developing technology.
'Very soon we will have the world’s leading AI models on every unclassified and classified network throughout our department,' Hegseth said in a speech at Musk’s space flight company, SpaceX, in South Texas.
The announcement comes just days after Grok — which is embedded into X, the social media network owned by Musk — drew global outcry and scrutiny for generating highly sexualized deepfake images of people without their consent."

The reason Grok so easily can generate nudes of children is because it is trained on that type of content. It is not using "imagination".
Too few are saying this part aloud. Any face generated using image-gens can be from a situation of abuse.

"There is only one way to read, which is to browse in libraries and bookshops, picking up books that attract you, reading only those, dropping them when they bore you, skipping the parts that drag — and never, never reading anything because you feel you ought, or because it is part of a trend or a movement. Remember that the book which bores you when you are twenty or thirty will open doors for you when you are forty or fifty — and vice versa. Happy Petrov Day to those who celebrate. On September 26, 1983, Stanislav Petrov made the correct decision to not trust a computer.
The early warning system at command center Serpukhov-15, loudly alerting of a nuclear attack from the United States, was of course modern and up-to-date. Stanislav Petrov was in charge, working his second shift in place of a colleague who was ill.
Many officers facing the same situation would have called their superiors to alert them of the need for a counter-attack. Especially as fellow officers were shouting at him to retaliate quickly before it was too late. Petrov did not succumb.
I've attached a short clip from a reenactment of the situation in the documentary The Man Who Saved the World.
The computer was indeed wrong about the imminent attack and Petrov likely saved the world from nuclear disaster in those impossibly stressful minutes, by daring to wait for ground confirmation. For context one must also be aware that this was at a time when US-Soviet relations were extremely tense.
I've previously written about three lessons to take away from Petrov's actions:
1. Embrace multiple perspectives
The fact that it was not Stanislov Petrov's own choice to pursue an army career speaks to me of how important it is to welcome a broad range of experiences and perspectives. Petrov received an education as an engineer rather than a military man. He knew the unpredictability of machine behavior.
2. Look for multiple confirmation points
Stanislav Petrov understood what he was looking for. While he has admitted he could not be 100% sure the attack wasn't real, there were several factors he has mentioned that played into his decision:
- He had been told a US attack would be all-out. An attack with only 5 missiles did not make sense to him.
- Ground radar failed to pick up supporting evidence of an attack, even after minutes of waiting.
- The message passed too quickly through the 30 layers of verification he himself had devised.
On top of this: The launch detection system was new (and hence he did not fully trust it).
3. Reward exposure of faulty systems
If we keep praising our tools for their excellence and efficiency it's hard to later accept their defects. When shortcomings are found, this needs to be communicated just as clearly and widely as successes. Maintaining an illusion of perfect, neutral and flawless systems will keep people from questioning the systems when the systems need to be questioned.
We need to stop punishing when failure helps us understand something that can be improved.

I turned down doing a workshop today. They wanted one on AI and ethics. After I submitted my tender (and they essentially accepted it) they asked me to spend half the time on teaching employee tips on using AI to save time.
So I explained I personally avoid using LLMs and image generators and wouldn't be good fit for the job.
It was quite a weird turn of events though and I'm still not sure how our initial talk gave them the impression I would be up for that.
Also, it was a 90-minute workshop and there is no way for me to cut the ethics content with exercises to anything less than that.
To be clear, a big point of the ethics workshop is to encourage giving people the autonomy to think for themselves on how, when and why they would want to use an "AI" tool, or object to it.
And I haven't heard back from this other speaking gig after I mentioned diversity matters to me and I reserve the right to withdraw if the lineup is too homogenous, as in large majority privileged men like myself.
I do still recommend living true to your values, though. 😅

The first element I write about in The Elements of AI Ethics is ‘Accountability Projection’. I explain it like this:
« The term accountability projection refers to how organisations have a tendency not only to evade moral responsibility but also to project the very real accountability that must accompany the making of products and services. Projection is borrowed from psychology and refers to how manufacturers, and those who implement AI, wish to be free from guilt and project their own weakness onto something else – in this case the tool itself.
The framing of AI appears to give manufacturers and product owners a “get-out-of-jail free card” by projecting blame onto the entity they have produced, as if they have no control over what they are making. Imagine buying a washing machine that shrinks all your clothes, and the manufacturer being able to evade any accountability by claiming that the washing machine has a “mind of its own”.
Machines aren’t unethical, but the makers of machines can act unethically. »
Character.ai, a Google company, is being sued by the mother of a boy who committed suicide after engaging with a character.ai chatbot.
In their defense Google asked the case to be dismissed on grounds that the chatbot output was constitutionally protected free speech. How the probabilistic text output of an LLM could even be considered speech was not explained. The request, one of many, was rejected.
It’s a very clear demonstration of accountability projection, and it’s happening constantly.

I identified with that famed XKCD cartoon for too long. Drawing a new panel myself made it easier to manifest another way of being.

Today (May 17) is the last day to support this initiative, proposed by European Union citizens, to ban conversion practices in the European Union.
These countries still haven’t reached the threshold but are getting close:
Croatia is at 93%
Denmark is at 88%
Austria is at 81%

Conversion practices (or so called “conversion therapies”) are acts which deliberately try to change or suppress a person’s sexual orientation or gender identity.
They are based on the belief that it is better to heterosexual and/or cisgender, and that other sexual orientations and gender identities are somehow flawed, wrong or “broken”.

@nprofile…yz3p Agree all the way. I really appreciate Timnit Gebru’s work on TESCREAL, with regards to eugenics. I try to bring this point forward in conversations sometimes but am often met with skepticism. People don’t like to hear that the tools they are using enable racist thinking.

I was reading a debate on LinkedIn where one side was arguing that "AI" image generators are more energy-efficient than hiring a photographer (or buying a stock photo).
One argument that made me do a painful face-palm was the notion that photographers need to eat, so they consume more energy.
The thing about humans is… wait for it… they ALWAYS need to eat. You can’t shift production to a computer and argue that it’s more efficient because it doesn’t eat. The human will keep eating(!) You are only adding energy-use.
These types of arguments illustrate a deep obliviousness towards human wellbeing. The argument only works if you expect the human to eat less when their job is taken away. Or die.
Their only data point for “AI" energy use was the point of generation, neatly excluding:
- all the energy used when scraping the internet for all the required datasets
- the energy used when building the model itself
- the energy used for required human workforce tasks, such as labeling (I bet those humans have to eat too)
- the energy used when building required data centers, both in-use and speculative investments (so many eating humans involved)
- the energy for hardware production and ongoing replacements
- the fact that the ease-of-use (and being “free”) encourages way, way more image generation than ever before…
Oh, and one more thing…
The image generator feeds on, and requires, photos and images taken and made by humans… who eat. Damn those humans.
Oh wait, the person doing the prompting… that person has to eat as well. It’s almost like it’s a human imperative.
Worth noting is also that none of the big "AI” companies are at all transparent about their energy consumption for this technology. Nor water consumption. Nor noise pollution. Nor e-waste. So there’s a ton of speculation.
I just wanted to make clear that I’m all for allowing humans to eat.

I just realised that in two years time I will have been blogging on my own domain for 30 years… that’s a party I should start planning now.

I hope the people who always say "I have nothing to hide" in support of surveillance understand how it's people who had nothing to hide who are being detained and deported by the Trump administration.
But I won't hold my breath.

Apparently all kids now need to know "AI". It was not long ago that all kids needed to know how to code.
I believe this: all kids need to know they are loved.
That is both a challenge to achieve that we can work on, and makes actual sense. And will have way more impact than a tech fantasy.

Sometimes I lazily sketch models and diagrams in bed. This is a core part of my wellbeing routine. 😁

It upsets me every time someone claims tech is neutral or bad/good just depends on how you use it. Tech is inherently political. Just mapping out the power structures of "AI" should make this clear.

I've been hearing this argument for a long while now:
"People criticised some tech in the 1900s and look it all turned out okay!"
1) How much was it really criticised?
2) Did it really turn out okay for everyone?
3) There was also tech that never got built because it harmed too much.
4) How is this even an argument for some current tech being okay?!

I know you know this, but it’s "sneak peek", not "sneak peak".
Unless you’re suddenly discovering a new summit on a mountain, that deviously was hidden behind a cloud.
Or, you know, if a climax takes you by surprise.

Gotta love that this is the second paragraph in the Wikipedia entry for Backdoor:
"In the United States, the 1994 Communications Assistance for Law Enforcement Act forces internet providers to provide backdoors for government authorities. In 2024, the U.S. government realized that China had been tapping communications in the U.S. using that infrastructure for months, or perhaps longer; China recorded presidential candidate campaign office phone calls —including employees of the then-vice president of the nation– and of the candidates themselves."
More on this story:
https://reason.com/2024/10/11/chinese-hackers-used-u-s-government-mandated-wiretap-systems/
« "The problem with backdoors is known—any alternate channel devoted to access by one party will undoubtedly be discovered, accessed, and abused by another," David Ruiz of the internet security firm Malwarebytes Labs wrote in 2019. He noted that cybersecurity researchers had been making that argument for years. They've been repeating themselves for years because their warnings appear to fall on deaf ears. »

«Whittaker explained how AI agents are being marketed as a way to add value to your life by handling various online tasks for the user. For instance, AI agents would be able to take on tasks like looking up concerts, booking tickets, scheduling the event on your calendar, and messaging your friends that it’s booked.
“So we can just put our brain in a jar because the thing is doing that and we don’t have to touch it, right?,” Whittaker mused.
Then she explained the type of access the AI agent would need to perform these tasks, including access to our web browser and a way to drive it as well as access to our credit card information to pay for tickets, our calendar, and messaging app to send the text to your friends.
“It would need to be able to drive that [process] across our entire system with something that looks like root permission, accessing every single one of those databases — probably in the clear, because there’s no model to do that encrypted,” Whittaker warned.»

Here’s a thing that is not often said out loud about e-mail encryption, courtesy of Migadu:
"Email as we know it and encryption are incompatible. If someone is telling you otherwise, they are not to be trusted.
Email is built on top of plain text protocols and messages flow in plain text. If you encrypt, you cannot scan for spam or viruses, index messages for searching or recover messages when a password gets lost. Not to mention the usability issues of changing passwords / encryption keys.
This cannot be fixed, at least not any time soon without breaking the protocols on which email relies.’
[…]
We know some email providers automatically encrypt messages as they arrive using users' public keys. That sounds exciting but in practice it does not really prevent the provider from accessing the mails. It only makes email less usable, less standard and more tied to that provider. What you gain in security you lose in portability and usability, and what we do not want for ourselves, we won’t be offering others either.”
