Tropes and cliches are like pizza and milkshakes and fries. They may not be astounding and new, but they are delicious and we all have our favorites.
What's your favorite trope?

I'm starting the week just shy of 73,000 words.
I have 8 chapters left to write, and 3 of those already are partially written. Let's see what I can get done this week.

The whole point of a Developmental Edit, whether you're an experienced author or not, whether you're a plotter or pantster, is to make the book look cohesive and like you planned it that way all along. Most foreshadowing is done in edits.

Quick Editing Tip:
Read the chapter out loud and see where you stumble.
Reading it aloud slows you down and makes you see the words on the page. It's a great, cheap way to find missing words and bad phrases.

@nprofile…zyt0 It's a tragedy. Shakespeare says it's a tragedy in the opening. Anyone who calls it a romance is straight up wrong.
It is romantic. It's a romantic tragedy. But it's still a tragedy.
Midsummer's Dream is a genre Romance.

2026-08-04 06:02:52 UTC

My lovelies.... a book having a sex scene does not make it a Romance Book.
Romance, as a genre, promises the relationship will have a happy ending. Either happy for now, or happily ever after.
Any genre can have sex scenes. Lots of them do. But they don't promise HEA.
#LianaEdits #AmWriting

2026-08-03 08:51:10 UTC

Genres exist to help readers find what they're looking for. Someone who wants to read a romance with a HEA ending isn't going to love a book that ends with everyone dead, even if the book is good. Write the book you want to write, then use the genre to market it correctly.

@nprofile…zyt0 It's been easier to find people on Bluesky and easier to cull what I see because I can narrow down my feeds so what I want to see during the workday vs the full rush of everyone I follow at once. And there are more people on Bluesky who live in my timezone.
It's been very hard to find people on Mastodon from Korea. But I also gave up on this app a few years back and barely use it.

@nprofile…zyt0 Will I be able to post on Bluesky and have the posts show up here on Mastodon?
Because I've cultivated a good list of scientists and creatives to follow on BlueSky, and have over 6k followers there, so working exclusively from Mastodon is not a selling point.

If you've queried a publisher or literary agent and they say they want to acquire your book, but that there's a small editing fee or publishing fee... RUN.
That's 100% a scam.
Legitimate literary agents or publishers do not charge the authors anything.

It's normal to write a book 12-24 months prior to publication, edit it in the year prior to publication, and have it finished and with the editor 6+ months in advance. That allows the publisher to send out review copies, promo the book, and have it ready to go on pub day. #LianaEdits

@npub1d62…tshf I do not understand someone reading YA and being mad the teenage characters acted like teens. If you didn't want to read about teens, you shouldn't have picked up a YA book!

2024-07-22 07:04:14 UTC

If you keep leaving reviews on YA books saying the characters seem immature and childish... maybe stop reading books about kids? There's an amazing range of books written with adult characters who act like adults. If the teenage heroes in YA books aren't mature enough for you, try not reading YA.

There's a whole herd of Trump voters who want to hide their racism and misogyny behind "If we vote for him it will wake everyone up and make them make changes!"
Voting for Trump puts a fascist dictator in power.
Voting for Trump is how you destroy democracy (and that's what Trumpers want).

I would have loved having someone younger and more in tune than Biden. It's not an option in 2024, so we move on.
We're voting Biden because the other option is a literal criminal and traitor who hates Americans and wants to take away basic human rights.
Cope with Biden, 2028 will be better.

Guess what a side effect of my migraine meds is? Vision issues!
Wheee!
I need someone to cure migraines.

Bug, my almost-15yo son, goes to an international school here that tries to be like stateside schools so they have letters and letter jackets.
Bug may have lettered without noticing.
I vaguely remember this being important to people in the beforetimes.

No, the USA has not ever had marriage equality.
Even when marriage was opened up to the gay community the disabled community was not allowed to marry without losing their access to healthcare. Which is not a concern of Pride Month or a reflection on the LGBTQ+ community, but is still an issue.

#Cdrama and #Kdrama Fans!
I need more recs for happy, found family, make-you-smile-and-warm-your-heart type of dramas. I don't mind murder and chaos as long as my people have a happy ending. Recent likes have been #BlossomsInAdversity, #StoryOfKunningPalace, I also liked #JoyOfLife & #MeetYourself.

@npub1psd…9sr7 I'm 100% for that. There are always outliers, especially with medicine.

Anyone here from Mexico City? I'm trying to figure out what this character would have seen from her apartment as a kid but my mom's descriptions are from the 1970's, so not recent enough for the book.

Suggestion:
Let's make vaccines free, and opting out of vaccines something that you need to work for.
Let's have public health classes like drivers ed. Three hours classes weekly for 4 weeks. Start with the absolute horror show of death statistics before vaccines. You will see polio wards and iron lungs. You will learn how vaccines work. There are tests and homework.
You will graduate with a Conscientious Vaccine Objector card to prove you understand the choice.
One card per vaccine skipped.

My definition of hell at this point is any place where I'm isolated and can't walk to shops or public transport.
I can live in a city, have beautiful views of mountains and woodlands, and still be 500 meters from the nearest bus stop. Seoul gives me all these things.

Is the Doctor Who on Disney+ actually Doctor Who, or is it the American remake? I've seen the ads and I can't tell. And I'm scared. Very scared.

I signed up for a retreat not realizing the last activity ends at midnight, and then we start at 0610 in the morning the following day. That is not enough sleep! But I'm going anyway.

@ alexwild My local news only posts the English-language updates on Twitter. It's an absolute trash site, but dismissing everyone on there is bad too.

@npub153s…cvd9 Chicago Field Museum has my heart because it was the one I went to as a kid. I found a really cool little dinosaur museum along a river in the Pyeongtaek area last year, and that was enchanting. A fun surprise. I 'm excited to go to Questacon in Canberra later this year, but I'm not sure I have a favorite. Museums are just fun to explore.

SHOULD YOU WRITE A SERIES?
Backlist (older titles) are sold by frontlist (new releases). Standalones sell well. Series sell well. But they can't sell at all if you don't like them enough to write them.
Prioritize writing what you love.
