Deciding what to submit to the Decentralised Messaging devroom at FOSDEM. Something related to XMPP of course :xmpp:
The deadline is 20th November, but I hope to put something up in the next few days before I forget 🍃
Anyone want to try and beat me to it? 😉

@nprofile…fgn8 ah yes, if you could do that it would be great! Asking them to install a different app on their new phone is easier than asking them to change the app on their existing phone when the old one was (from their perspective) working anyway 😌
By the way, the last time this idea came up, @nprofile…38vg spoke about closing new registrations but keeping the SMS code working for existing Quicksy users to sign in again (eg. if they have a new device). Is that still the plan this time round?

@nprofile…fgn8 I have several friends and family on Quicksy iOS who are not technical and it would be a struggle to get them to change apps again. Would it be possible to keep "Quicksy" up for existing users so they continue to receive updates?
If keeping it up indefinitely is not possible, a year or 6-month deprecation timeline would help greatly too (they're in different parts of the country so I don't meet them that often and would have to be physically present to help them switch over)

@nprofile…f83y right, that was the conclusion I came to as well but was hoping to be proven wrong 😛
Removing a tag sounds like an easy functionality to add, but selecting the originating message seems to be quite the stumbling block. I guess I'll just remember to manually un-tag these for now...

2026-05-17 03:37:24 UTC

Does #Thunderbird have a way to set up a #filter for "act upon $message when I reply to $smessage"? (Basically, I have a "To reply" tag and want to automatically remove the tag once I actually send a reply) :thunderbird:

@nprofile…lqnd I used to use bangs too, but the thing is I'm often trying to nudge myself into using a certain other search engine (currently #marginalia) and also many of them are custom search engines that don't have bangs. I also don't want to use the address bar (which would allow me to set custom keywords for custom search engines) because I'm pushing back against the idea that conflated navigating to a particular website with using a search engine to search for something

2026-04-26 05:41:00 UTC

#Firefox just enshittified its #search box.
Earlier, I could enter a keyword, and then use the arrows to choose which search engine I wanted to use
Now, I have to press Shift+Tab to go back and select the search engine selector dropdown, press Enter to open it, and then only go down and select the search engine I want to use. Worse, that search engine then becomes the default for future searches so I have to go and change it back the next time

@nprofile…ynd9 like many commenters I'm a bit sceptical of the crypto/blockchain part, but I like the idea in general! For funding to reach down to the underlying libraries too
This might even invert the logic of wanting to make an end-user project to get more funds/contributions: now libraries will get more support (that they deserve) when they serve as the support for multiple projects!

Donations are welcome, but simply signing on and using the services is too!

Consider using #Prav instead, which is:
🗳️ community-driven, so you can push for features you like, and, more importantly, vote against changes you dislike!
🆓 freedom-respecting, so you can fork the code to make things work the way you want
:xmpp: standards-based, using the #XMPP protocol

What's the deal with #Linux (specifically, #Debian) and #multimonitor setups (specifically, with #ThinkPad and #DisplayPort)?
I have an #X230Tablet with a monitor (VGA) and an e-ink screen (HDMI over DisplayPort) in addition to its in-built screen, but I can only use two of them at a time. The third one just remains blank, and whichever it is, only starts working when I disable one of the other two 🫣️
Is this a general thing or just a "me and my laptop" thing?

@nprofile…cz30 hey this is cool! I always wanted apps to have custom sounds, and now we have a way to add that back 😁
My ideal (a bit far off, but maybe not too much?) would be to specify custom sounds per person/contact instead of per app. So we could have some kind of FreeDesktop spec to include a contact identifier (email, JID, Fedi handle, etc.) in a notification, and if that identifier can be matched against contacts it can play the corresponding sound ✨
