Hurricane Daveosaurus

I seem to have accidentally got myself on a lot of booksellers' email lists (forgetting to untick boxes when ordering books seems to be my problem) and just today I got an email:
"Our Children's Book of the Month is Detective Beans and the Map of Mystery by Li Chen. Perfect for young readers, this bestselling graphic novel adventure follows your favourite kitten detective on a fun, clue-cracking treasure hunt across Cat Town."

A wrecker will come and pick it up and pay for it, although the amount of money will be negligible. When the Car That Wouldn't Die finally went to meet its maker at the start of the year I only got $100 for it (and that was with four reasonably new tyres).

let's just say that the "somewhere near Taupō" was a definite but unconnected reference... laser-focused on readers who were a specific age, at a specific time, in a specific place...

I honestly think it's more likely that if anything untoward happens to him, it will be at the hands of one of his own. Guy that took a pot shot at him at a rally? Registered Republican gun nerd. Guy who tried to get himself and his guns into a rally in California? Registered Republican sovcit. Guy who blew up a swasticar outside a Trump hotel? Trump supporter. They just can't stop hating, and when they run out of targets, hate themselves and their fellows.

and apparently (from what I've read on the interwebs, so take it with a grain of salt) there's even a workaround been found for the censorship problem as it's simply keyword based. It won't tell you about Tienanmen Square but it's happy to tell you about Ti3n4nm3n Squ4r3.

I only know ANYTHING about this from social media. If I relied on my local paper (or its web site) to inform me I'd think the only things going on in the entire Rest Of The World were some elderly orange demential patient pretending to to be the US President, Bibi the Butcher running out of toys to throw out of his cot, and a hell of a lot of sports.

I don't know how it works in Canada (or where he said it), but in NZ anything said in the debating chamber in Parliament isn't covered by defamation law. Parliament has its own rules and processes - the Speaker can kick someone out of the chamber, but they can't be sued.
Outside Parliament we've had a PM sued by a convicted killer when they wrongly used the word "murderer", but inside Parliament have had a breach of a court suppression order be unable to be prosecuted.

It's the new sports betting. Spend forever studying form and previous results and make an educated guess as to how the horses are going to finish in the Melbourne Cup. Or who wins the quinella in Florida.

I'd just settle for being able to grow lemons. Unfortunately it's too cold this far south to grow lemons, and for it to get warm enough would mean flooding fairly much the entire city. (Southland doesn't have the luxury of being on a gentle slope like Canterbury. Ashvegas is about 100m above sea level. Edendale - a longer distance inland - is only about 40m above sea level).

if it's the article I think it is (that I might have heard some time last week) the people they were interviewing had been using it for keeping weeds down in - a vineyard I think? - and they reckoned it was actually beneficial for the soil so they were going to experiment in a paddock. Still could be wasteful but there's nothing much else they can do if the money they can get for selling the wool is less than the cost of trucking it out.

Land Information NZ hosted a couple of webinars this week and showed us the new functionality in their basemap service at https://basemaps.linz.govt.nz. Thanks to much of the country now having LIDAR data (and a bit of fudging in the gaps with 20 metre contours) they've now got a smart new 3D terrain map.
The problem is, sometimes the LIDAR has been processed to show the underlying ground level, not the above-ground structures...

A bit of googling tells me that it can be found in NZ but at a massive price.
Raw sugar might work? It's a different flavour, but if a sweet crunch is more important than strict authenticity it might be a cost-effective solution.
