Here at Mastodon we lost a voice for health, medicine and science, Helen Branswell. She was a Canadian living in the US until last year when she returned to be close to family.
She worked hard to counter disinformation, her clear reporting on infectious disease helped me and many other make informed decisions among a lot of misinformation being passed around like bad gossip. She passed from cancer today.
She will be missed greatly. Condolences go out to her friends, family and colleagues at the loss.

Started the day off well before dawn. Hustled out of town with a friend, where a beach was at low tide at sunrise and collected some nice agates, the largest the size of a deck of cards, very weird for this time of year.
Followed by painting of state park areas to cover graffiti, part of a volunteer crew.
Then a delicious lunch outside picnic style at a favorite restaurant nearby, followed by a roadside stand of flowers and fresh corn, and a relaxed drive back oggling more leaves turning bright colors.
The weather was cool in the early morning, sunny and light breeze after 9, high in the mid 60s.
Ready for bed at 5pm, some tea did not touch the tired.

Robin Williams, Mr Rogers, Dolly Parton... 3x the news of losing a celebrity brought tears. Their talents, hearts, and the courage of kindness rarely rivaled.

Took 1 minute to push Yale to stand up for democracy.. worth it. Raising a fuss helped in other cases, fingers crossed it works again. Tied of all this bs, but still trying to rally folks to fight for their rights and justice. We only get through this if we persist in trying.

Sorry the heat and smoke chased you out of Tetons and Yellowstone so early. I've car camped for decades, Tetons and Yellowstone are terrific in spring, and I promise it's worth going back for more, lots more. It drew me back for weeks every year for 2 decades, and still didn't get enough of it. Before the roads get packed, while temps are still mild, babies and wildflowers everywhere... and way less mosquitos the size and sound of harleys ... spring is sublime there. Hope you get to play there more. Looking forward to your coast adventures.

The coast is so pretty. Trees n shrubs are leafing and flowering. Bees and ladybugs all over, birds are singing their little hearts out. It's so green! Waves are gentler, sand has filled in most places and packed down. It doesn't get hot here like inland, so it's very hard to go inside - like ever. Half the year going outside takes some serious bundling against the wind and rain, but it's worth it. Now it's just a free for all of perfection. All my garden plants came back this year too, some are far from blooms but those little buds bring joy still.

In the light of a confession meaning baring your heart unfiltered, that was fitting. Promoting an event where naked unvarnished truth prevails that isn't topic limited, just themed as confessions, all fits just fine. They've been funny, sad, gross, collectively covered so much ground... the confessions have variety that's for sure. I'd imagine the events gather people who want to hear others 'keep it real', and it can probably be quite a ride topic wise.

There will be auroras tonight for many northern states in the US, other countries too.
If you're in the PNW though, in this 3 inches of rain a day onslaught, you know better than to bother. Wish for you this week is you're spared flooding, sinkholes, landslides and roof leaks.

Saturday's #portland #Oregon #protest march is going to be epic. 3 starting points for the marches. 2 bridges will be shut down for crossing. Those 3 groups merge with a 4th stationary point.
Organizers have done an incredible job. Local police are arranged to protect it all.
We still have some crucial protections, rights, and real order for peaceful protest in our favor still. I urge everyone to make use of that or we will lose them.

Oregon is too. State is compensating financially/with services for the environment, public health and benefit to a degree but not everything is operational either. For example, not getting trash removed would draw and habituate wildlife in terrible ways, adding risks to public too, so they're on it.

Great sign, are you having fun? You're not aschock full of stories and reverences as Oregon, you holding out on us? 😆
If you happen to see Elk or buffalo crossing signs along the Tetons and Yellowstone that has a small* added sticker of a cowgirl riding the elk holding her hat high above her head with one arm, could you let me know? It was a big and consistent thing around there for a decade, but I haven't been back since covid and wonder if they're still persisting over there. It was impressive it lasted as long as it did.
*out of proportion in order to be sneakier
Have a great adventure!

Because of federal cuts, the CDC will no longer do surveillance for 6 harmful pathogens in our food supply: campylobacter, cyclospora, listeria, shigella, vibrio and Yersinia.
Oregon was one of 10 states that was directly part of the collaboration. Oregon was getting funding that was cut and monitoring is no longer mandated by the feds.
Ignoring food poisoning pathogens is not "Making America Healthy Again".
While destroying the infrastructure and quality it was known to represent, the new CDC oversight sent this message: "“Although FoodNet will narrow its focus to Salmonella and STEC, it will maintain both its infrastructure and the quality it has come to represent.” They explained there isn't enough funding to continue monitoring, after they cut the funding.
It will affect us all, but it will cost many of our most vulnerable - the ill, elderly, children and pets.

Sure thank you for asking. I was not given any meds due to .. the medical system here is really struggling is the readers digest version. That worried/stressed pretty bad.
Resting, a lot, and yesterday started to show signs little of improvement, one symptom finally lifted. Small increment better today, another symptom was gentler. Tedious but trending! Still feel pretty awful though.
The advice to slow activity helped the most. After doing a must do chore and feeling like I could do one more thing, I'd tell myself if I still have energy to spare in 3 hours I could do the non essential task then. That same non essential chore has yet to be done. Thank you and everyone for the strong advice to err on the side of caution intensely.
The memorial for the CF friend was yesterday, lots of conflicting advice, pressure and dialogue around it.. just mask, if you test neg it will be fine, etc..I held firm it wasn't responsible or even feasible and that was the right move.

I adopted the dog, it's official.
Talked with his other family, they gave a hearty blessing.
We all got mushy. She sent baby pics. I sent video of his first zoomies and all 3 of us playing together in the yard.
She thanked me for picking him. I thanked her for picking us. It was super sweet.
The dog itself was free, the past month he's been neutered, chipped, flea treated and bathed, they asked to only recoup those costs, super fair.
His name is now Mork, from Mork and Mindy fame. He's in his prime, extra hairy, so brilliant in some ways and so naive and innocent in others.
He's suddenly in a whole new big confusing new world to figure out and love his way through, in the throes of adventure, and he's a supreme goofball. To top it off, he's profoundly sweet and affectionate. It fits.

2025-05-22 01:08:36 UTC

A week long trial was estimated just to see how new dog adapted to everything, how we all bonded. 4 days in, I asked to adopt him outright. They said yes!
My heart just got about 100 pounds heavier, with a lot of fuzz thrown in.

As an introvert, rallying is so not my style. Nor is joining political discussions, or confronting bullying. I can do it to some small scale as needed in life, but the consistency and perseverance needed now has been really hard.
Gathering the courage and moxie to rally today. Constitutional rights are use them or lose them. Protests have forced change (scared lawmakers enough to yield else get voted away) before, when crowds get large and steady enough.
Here goes an act of constructive desperation in many parts.

Would tourism be imposing at this stage of things? Canada is right to be angry and distrusting in general, I respect those responses, I'd have them too in your shoes. Unsure if we've given you all the ICK so strongly if nerdy Oregon Democrats can be tolerated. I'd like to give support, commerce and be around some decency. Let my guard down about mass shootings. Not be scared of unmarked, unaccounted for gestapo disappearing people who use their 1st amendment rights without due process. That kind of thing. A real vacation for a week or so.

Canada friends,
1st, I'm sorry about the USA corruption, elbows up.
2nd: Can Americans get vaccines or prescriptions there? Our FDA is being corrupted too. Our new head of health hates vaccines. I'm scared.
Is tourism to you there still ok? Are we so hated, deservedly, it would be best not to? Is Jasper open from the fires again? Figure folks there might need some economic stimulus...

Having lived in the foothills or adjacent to volcanoes all my life, Mt St Helens big eruption especially, I've been so grateful for the supplies that made a world of difference. Besides those same supplies came in clutch for floods, roads/phone and power being out weeks at a stretch, and forest fires too, so all the better to have had them at the ready.

"Man's attitude toward nature is today critically important simply because we have now acquired a fateful power to alter and destroy nature. But man is a part of nature, and his war against nature is inevitably a war against himself? [We are] challenged as mankind has never been challenged before to prove our maturity and our mastery, not of nature, but of ourselves."
