Forest Fern

Always looking for peaceful places to walk, read, & take photos. I enjoy #bloomscrolling to see the beauty in your part of our world. I've learned a lot here, especially, #kindness.

Over here, it's my little dog, forest trails, classic movies, 70s gameshows & random silliness or somberness.

A long forgot-what-planet-I'm-on afternoon nap
Two bowls of Hudsonville deer tracks ice cream (probably the cause of my nap)
Smart, genuinely kind people on here who I relate to and look up to for ideas, opinions, and friendship.

Pasta with olive oil, onions, garlic, black pepper, and a pinch of herbs for dinner.
My old TV somehow began automatically muting commercials on every streaming service. How? No idea. Why? Who cares, all the pie holes have been shut.
Was able to enable my old wifi scanner & successfully run a test scan. Tomorrow will be an old photo album.

Lengthy but interesting stories about various family members going back a few generations. Questions answered, and perhaps even understand people more now.
Jigsaw puzzles. A real tough one is making it more enjoyable.
Mother. In this case, the movie with Debbie Reynolds and Albert Brooks. Every time it's on, I stop to watch it. Relatable.

Any recommendations or thoughts about for least allergy-inducing acrylic paint brand?
My mom & I have both developed a terrible allergy to the cheap acrylic paint she uses. Our allergy is immediate and scary: congestion, throat closing up, strangle feeling, and red-rash skin. Just horrible reaction to this crap paint.
Thank you for any idea you may have.

Oh yes! That was me. I was that quiet kid, too.
When I was in 6th & 7th grade, my school had a library, but there was no money for a librarian. During my lunch hour, I would go to the library, leaf through every single card in the card catalog, and check out my own books. All the supplies were there, but no librarian, except for me, this lanky kid who wanted to be the librarian. If I didn't check out books, I was buried in the reference books. Some of my happiest school days.

I still could live for weeks within the pages of reference books. I'm a pre-internet child, too, and the reference section in the library carried me away to another realm, and another realm, and another. As a child, I was amazed by all that was learned before me & knew then that I had a lot of studying to do in my young life to learn it all.

Watching Artemis II return back home to Earth was breathtaking. I was so nervous for them, and so relieved to see all of them exit the capsule.

@nprofile…nk8a So true. The enormous amount of information available now compared to when I began researching in 1997-98 is striking. Back then, my head was in the books more than the computer, something that I see myself returning to once again now that I have more details on past research.

2026-02-28 03:39:49 UTC

- reply

@nprofile…nk8a Yes, finally solved one of the loose ends. You're right, it felt good. There are several more that I keep picking at, when I can. As for the tombstone, I will never add a line because it was decided back then, by both the great-grandmother and her children, one of which was my grandmother. I wouldn't want to dishonor their decisions. It's not my place.

@nprofile…nk8a I like & dislike not knowing where someone went & what became of them. I recently discovered location & eventual demise of ancester who bailed out on family & started new life. He is buried elsewhere, but his first family placed his name on the tombstone. I asked older members why & was told she probably didn't want people to know he left & hopefully talk would stop (except for few of us great-grandkids still talking). Each time I see that grave, I think about him not being there.

@nprofile…nk8a I thought it was interesting to see what else is being mined and where. I really never thought about mining too much before now when we spoke, except for one coalmining ancester who traveled from the Midlands of England, to Wales then Pennsylvania before finally Michigan. I always try to get inside their heads aa ro historical events and their decisions to move.

2026-02-26 23:04:13 UTC

- reply

@nprofile…nk8a Yes. Coal was mined from Jackson, west and north, as well as northeasterly into the Thumb.
Here's a somewhat wonky website that outlines all the materials that are mined in Michigan (as well as all the other States):

@nprofile…nk8a My ancestors were mainly drawn to MI for the land for farming, some for coal mining (after having left Pennsylvania), and others for lumber industry.

@nprofile…nk8a Thank you for this. I never knew the full meaning, really, until you provided more info. I have (!) encountered Gretna Green destinations in my research, mainly Steuben, Indiana for SE Mich couples in my family.
I've only recently begun researching Holland Land Co. I wonder if I'll discover other companies that were doing the same thing, but in different directions. Clearly the waters edge everywhere drew people, and companies.

I was curious because it appears to me Buffalo(Erie Co), NY was an epicenter of different ethnics (the Seneca, German, French, Jewish, Alsatians, etc.). I've wondered about arrival via Erie Canal or travel through Canada?
My Alsatians arrived NY> Holland Land Co. to Erie Co 1835 > Penn > Ohio > Mich (lower).
Interesting to me how people arrived & how they dispersed after the Revolutionary War.
I've another branch who arrived 1635 in New Haven Colony (Connecticut)>VT>NY>MI

@nprofile…nk8a Very interesting travels! As for Gretna Green, I wonder if that would be primarily a Scottish tradition?
My brief research so far: it took three weeks to travel the Erie Canal, AND, that the Holland Land Co. located where people landed (primarily NY?), sold Erie County, NY land including travel inland via the Erie Canal. I agree with you the Great Lakes would be a major "highway" just like many rivers throughout because the forests were still too overgrown.

@nprofile…nk8a A question for you, if you don't mind, where did your family tree members arrive when they left Europe and the U.K.? I noticed the early 1800s on some of your writings, which coincides with two of my branches. Also, do I remember correctly they ended up in Pennsylvania to start? Mine came through New York State (pre-Ellis Island) & the Holland Land Co. via Erie Canal to the Buffalo Area in 1835-ish.

@nprofile…nk8a In my research, war may have contributed to language of a (occupied) country.
My maternal family in the U..S censuses list both Alsace, France, or Switzerland depending upon years they were interviewed. These relatives spoke Alsatian, its own language with German dialect & French. Many times they stated they spoke German (probably because no one knew about Alsatian here?).
Paternal side spoke yet another German dialect found in Czech & Austria area.

Forest roses. Which kind? No clue. Never read up on roses. Only know they're exceedingly plentiful this year. #Michigan #wildflower #roses #forest #woods #nature

Whitetail deer nibbling on the trees. She was still foraging for last year's acorns as this spot was loaded with them last fall. Pretty much every forest was booming with acorns last year. #whitetaildeer #nature

For today, I will call this Somber Pond. I think the forest is still trying to wake up. Sure is green everywhere.

My little dog has found her favorite spot in the woods: the wild sunflower patch. She loves earing the leaves.

Morning forest report: raining, downpour at times, dark, peaceful. Why wait for the sunny days to take photos and video, right? I had to adjust the exposure so you could see us, well, the dog and the #forest. #nature #rain

The forest is ours.
Damp day, lush green foliage. The mayapples are thriving.
My dog is far ahead, nose to the ground, trying to absorb every smell.
