I used to think I was indecisive, but now I'm not so sure.

This is a new account - but for technical reasons I have not been able to move my old posts here yet. I hope they will eventually be available.

I am a lot more nurture than nature when it comes to this sort of thing, so I regard it mainly as a way to relate to the past - not as something which says a lot about me.
Though, from the records, being a doctor or a priest definitely runs in her family, even if it isn't genetics.

I've been thinking about this, and 500 years should theoretically be possible to trace. My family are all farmers, so little trace of them beyond names in church books, but my wife's family is all priests and doctors and merchants, and some lines can be traced with back to the 1400s. I wonder if something fun would show up in her data.

Agreed, and when people complain that this will impact wealth generation (which it likely will, mathematically) let's remind them that the earth is burning and the generated wealth goes to the wrong people.
We don't need to become richer, we need to distribute wealth better.

Thanks! I am not sure I understand the link to the Tobin Tax, though.
In Denmark there's been a movement to move state jobs back out of the capital again, to other regions. It's been moderately successful, I think, but something more fundamental will have to be done to ensure that the countryside thrives under a market economy.
Or, you know, take steps to not let the concept of a market economy ruin the lives of everyone outside the major cities.

> As for jobs for these men, sorry, no idea.
This is the real issue, but it cannot be solved using market logic.

Do you reckon Venstrepartiet will insist in joining a government, or will they be satisfied with supporting a left-leaning government with influence over some key areas in return?
Danish news agencies claim they insist on being part of the regering, but I reckon they have to say that to get the most out of any negotiations anyway.

Well, wherever I can maybe help to make things available in CoMaps :) Sometimes these things are easy to do, but no one has the time to do them.
I'm not talking live data, just bus lines and static arrival/leave times, etc.

2026-08-31 11:49:25 UTC

For those who know the ins and outs of #openstreetmap - how diffcult is it to help make bus routes and time tables available in OSM? Is there some way to help out?
The busses from my city are not available right now, and it's pretty much the only reason I still have to use commercial map software.

Same with depression, borderline, all of these diagnoses. But then again, isn't a lot of traditional medicine like that?
Pneumonia also diagnoses the condition - not why it occurred. Same with, I don't know, a broken arm.

That's always bothered me about these diagnoses - but I suppose they're mainly categories which will enable you to get some sort of assistance or be met with understanding, or perhaps understand yourself better.

that said, mixing languages unnecessarily is a definite class marker marking you as lower class or uncultured even in egalitarian Denmark and I suspect also Sweden.

2026-07-31 10:35:21 UTC

- reply

probably true, though I am not aware of any comparative studies. In either case it's an area where language is entirely democratic, people do as they please and that's the direction a language takes. English itself loans thousands of words every year and is still English, for example.

I think, in general, spell checkers should just piss off. Like, I sometimes make a mistake, big deal. Does not at all justify the constant hazzle and stress from:
* Correctly spelled words marked as false due to an app spontaneously resetting the language to US English or just not recognizing the word
* Danish words flagged as wrong because.... well, see above
* Squiggly lines when mixing languages - French, Danish, Quechua, you name it
And don't get me started on auto-correct, especially when using an OS or app which likes to enable spell checks every time it updates. I am looking at you, MS Teams.

it makes a lot of sense from a practical perspective, and modern people often forget that marriage was a lot more like a business contract than a union of love in those days. A farm did not function well without a husbonde or a bondekone, and so when your partner died you quickly remarried for practical reasons. Obviously it would be nice if you liked the person too, though.

2026-06-09 18:07:32 UTC

from the church books on my wife's family, I can see that the same thing was true for farmers and preachers in Jutland. Very often, the young priest or farmer would marry the older man's widow to get the job or farm, and then take a younger wife when she died, and so on.

Another reason - and I am struggling with how to process and come to terms with this - is that I've started to work with AI in my day job.
Things are moving incredibly fast in software development with agentic AI, and while I have severe reservations about the long term sustainability and ethics of LLM-use, the feeling of being left behind and being seen as "always against" didn't do much good for my mental well being. And, you know, I like to be able to pay my bills.
As one of my colleagues say, the branch we're sitting on is going to be cut - it's a little better to be in control of the saw, so you can brace for the impact and try to stick the landing.
As I said, I am struggling with how to process it, but going to work feels less stressful now.

I will write a guide for it, so you can all join me and have fun.

Thanks!
I think, to begin with, I need to get a T114 and flash the RNode software to it and see how far that takes me.
It's also, for me, a matter of trying to get an overview of the ecosystem and all the moving parts - that's how I learn stuff.
And then, in the end, I'd like to be able to write an absolute beginners guide to getting started with it. Both to spread knowledge but also to verify that I understand everything.

I've been trying to wrap my head around a new thing the past couple of days, new to me, that is. It's a meshable independent and decentralized network architecture called #Reticulum.
I'm not a networking guy, nor am I a software developer, so I am a little out of my depth, but it seems like a really interesting idea for resistance infrastructure. I just need to figure out how to properly connect my local network to the wider world, preferably over #meshtastic or LoRa.

Even as a collector, I agree with this. It was noticable to see how many Syrian coins flooded the market after the civil war started.
I very rarely buy coins anymore, and when I do they are common Roman coins. I wish I could be sure they're from old collections, but the reality is that many auction houses won't disclose when they are - not sure why - and that if someone is dodgy and want to sell looted coins they're just going to make up a provenance anyway.

I was just thinking about this, but aren't all autobiographies also autofiction? Who can claim that their perspective is the OBJECTIVE experience, we all editorialize our own narrative and experience to ourselves and I am sure it's even more pronounced in writing.
So really, aren't all autobiographies autofiction? The different is perhaps the perspective of the narrator-voice.

2026-01-29 08:29:59 UTC

- reply

My first autobiography was Rousseau's 'Confessions' which I liked but which devolved into petty squabbling towards the end. I appreciated his radical honesty, though, and the philosophical ideas behind the project.
My second autobiography was Knausgård's 'My Struggle' - pretty much the same story.
I've also read 'The Book of Margery Kempe' which is an autobiography from a very religious woman written in the 1430s. She's clearly a nutjob, but I find it fascinating as an account of a middle-class woman, almost all other autobiographies of women are by nuns or nobles.
I'm only now realizing that you wrote 'autofiction' and not 'autobiographies', which makes this comment sort of pointless. Oh well...
