I'm still having difficulty coming to grips with the fact that people are talking about the 90s like it was some sort of bygone era of myth and legend and I'm like, that was like five years ago.
"People didn't have Internet back then--" Yes we fucking did. We had obnoxious tech bros with messiah complexes. We had video games. We had mindless, vapid entertainment to distract us from unjust wars. We had all of those.
It was not a mystical era. We had problems and stupid people too.

Black holes kinda break people's brains. The Schwarzchild radius black hole that was sucking in cars and bridges was about the size of a football field as depicted in the game.
I did the math. Such a black hole would have to be 17 solar masses.
A black hole that massive would not just suck in a bridge or two. Earth would basically cease to have an independent gravitational field at that point. There would be no planet anymore, and it would be gone in a hurry. 😅

Slight tangent here, but I am reminded of a voxel based game (I wish I remembered which one it was because it looked kind of fun) that had a thing where you could spawn a black hole and watch the entire landscape get sucked into it.
I was a neat demo, and I understand why they put it in there, but there one one problem. No, not the fact that a black hole would just "hover" over the San Francisco Bay (although that in itself was problematic).
No, it was its size (cont'd)

MAGA is a dying movement but its death throes still rage across the country. Kentucky being ruby red means it's still got a stranglehold on local politics. Other results across the country were really good for progressive candidates. That's the most important takeaway for those of us that care about these things.

The Internet is not a Dark Forest. If you publish something, it's a safe bet that whatever it was you put out there is going to live forever on a server somewhere. Deleting it locally does nothing to protect you.

In the early 80s, IBM and Microsoft worked together *extensively* to corner the home PC market to the point where they were routinely called a duopoly. Microsoft as we know it today would not have existed without its early partnership with IBM that lasted until the mid-nineties.

We'll be lucky to get the scraps the way things are heading.

2026-02-20 05:51:45 UTC

It's going to be interesting how developers handle Moore's Law go into reverse gear. While I'd like to think this would usher in a new golden age of lean development using limited resources like in the days of old, it's more likely that people will just shift to cloud computing, blissfully ignoring the fact that it's hard to access the cloud when you don't have access to a cheap personal computing device.

It seemed ridiculous that we'd run into shortages as they were depicted in those works of fiction.
Remember those times? How we laughed? Haha.

Just a public service announcement for administrators of federated instances whether they be #Mastodon, #PeerTube, #Lemmy, or whatever:
If your SSL certificate expires, *please* get that fixed ASAP. It not only prevents people from using your website very easily, it also breaks federation. If they want to watch me play video games online the link to my platform is available to all. I don't gatekeep.
Anyways, that's my random thought train for the day. 😉

I don't regret moving to Mastodon. In that time I've spread to other federated platforms. I stopped streaming to Twitch and have an Owncast server. I still have a YouTube account but my content is uploaded to PeerTube. I'd like to expand to additional platforms but the only thing holding me back is a desire not to spread myself too thin. I've got enough on my plate and I think, at least for now, I'm happy with my online presence.
And Bluesky? Well, they can keep it.

2025-10-03 23:19:15 UTC

- reply

I'm not on Bluesky but I can see what's going there since their posts are (mostly) publicly available on the internet and the whole site is definitely having "pre-2022 Twitter" vibes going on right now.
Moderation issues, Nazis polluting the platform with little blowback from the people running the platform, the constant backbiting. It's, well, familiar. It's basically Twitter in the months before Elon bought it.

2025-10-03 23:15:29 UTC

- reply

Now Twitter had issues even before it got turned into "X" or whatever it is now. Honestly I was already kind of on my way out, and Musk's buyout only served to firm up my decision to leave that platform. I was already on Mastodon dot technology before I moved to my own self-hosted instance (that server had shut down for reasons unrelated to the Twitter diaspora).
Now, as to the people who joined in 2022, said "this sucks", and all left for bluer skies? Well, they are having a moment now.

2025-10-03 23:12:13 UTC

- reply

Two other platforms emerged, however: Threads (Facebook) and Bluesky. Bluesky was notable because its founding members were some of the same people who used to run Twitter, including Jack Dorsey himself! A lot of the people who did try out Mastodon eventually either returned to Twitter or joined one/both of those two platforms.
Mastodon still retained a fair number of the Twitter diaspora however, and to this day enjoys a larger user count that it would have if Elon hadn't bought Twitter.

2025-10-03 23:08:49 UTC

So back in 2022 there was this huge influx of users from Twitter into the #fediverse and it was, well, a bit of a shitshow. The #Mastodon servers that were set up to handle maybe hundreds (at most) of users suddenly swelled up tenfold and the platform nearly collapsed. Large instances did in fact disappear. There was chaos from having all those users who were expecting a perfect Twitter-like experience after leaving that platform and were left disappointed and disillusioned.

2025-09-10 21:32:29 UTC

Ok, weird time to announce this, but I have to.
This weekend I'll be taking down my #PeerTube instance for maintenance. I've come under attack by content scrapers, and must take some mitigation efforts to keep them from hitting my network usage cap this month.
So far it's more of a nuisance than anything but I have to take some sort of action before it gets worse. Hopefully the outage will be brief and be barely noticeable.
I'll post a video announcement shortly.

"We need to paint our opponents"
No. They do a great job of doing that by themselves. You don't need to highlight what absolute scum they are because they are practically *bragging* about what absolute scum they are.
This isn't your grandfather's political arena anymore. Stop talking about your opponents in any light. They do not matter. You, the candidate, matters. Talk about *you*. Get your base motivated to vote *for* you, and not against some bogeyman.

Don't get me wrong; I love Tom Walz. He's my governor, and he's a great guy.
But listen. He's making the classic error every Democratic politician has made in recent memory, and this is also why I think we need to expunge every political advisor they have working for them.
*Why* do they keep giving oxygen to their opponents' campaigns?
I didn't know who was running for governor on the GOP side until the Walz campaign told me.
It's a blunder. They should stop doing that.

Inflation is an insidious beast. My wife just said that we're not enough to know that BOGO stands for "Buy One, Get One Free".
I was like "Why, what does it stand for now?"
"Buy One, Get One 20% Off"
Da fuq!? Kids these days really are getting ripped off.

One thing worth looking into is seeing if the case is reusable. Get a new motherboard, some fans, a CPU and new peripherals. Air flow might be an issue, and if it was built to proprietary specs new mb's might not even fit in there, but who knows?
New computers do not come with optical disk bays anymore which is a shame.

Just slap Linux on that bad boy; I'm sure it will run just fine 😅
(this is partly a joke because I've had some harrowing experiences even getting Linux to run on older hardware)

The joke "Time flies like an arrow; fruit flies like a banana" imply the existence of time flies, a concept I don't think any of us are ready for.

I saw that on one of the live feeds. The guy wasn't wearing any clothes, just boxer shorts.

I don't know if a recent update broke things on #PeerTube but it looks like my markdown for my support pop-up window isn't working.for any of my channels. I narrowed it down to the image not loading but it's only emerged as a problem in the past few weeks since I did check it a couple of months ago. Did PeerTube decide to no longer render image links in markdown anymore?

I would say that the *inventor of the GPL* would absolutely agree that that GPL is a political statement (not naming him because he's gross for other reasons, unfortunately)

One of the most infuriating things about living in the Terrible Times is that everything is coming at you with this Great Urgency often accompanied with the message, "We need to do something!"
Ok, so I do something. I make phone calls. I donate to the right places. I sign up to the right organizations. And and and...
Nothing seems to work. The Terrible Times just keep getting more terrible.

I think it is possible to say that 1) he is a stupid man and 2) stupid people are perfectly capable of doing horrible things.

I'd like to make the following observation. Yesterday's Oval Office press briefing with Elon Musk was not a projection of strength. They are getting defensive. They know a lot of people are pissed at them and the walls are closing in.
I'm saying this because right now I'm seeing a lot of doomerism permeate the online discourse. This is not all inevitable. Keep fighting because whatever we doing, is getting to them. And it shows.

I'm working on setting up a #mastodon instance and the most difficult part of it may be setting up a mail server. My last attempt ended in failure so this is basically my kryptonite. My question for #MastodonAdmins is: is it necessary to do that for a single-user instance or can I skate by without one, at least for the short term until I gather up the courage to try a second go at this?

Hm that's strange. I'm attempting to upload a video to my #PeerTube instance (basically to announce its retirement so that I can migrate over to my new domain) and the damn thing refuses to be published. I can view the video if it's private, but when I try to mark it as public, the video just hangs there and refuses to play. I have no idea what's going on because it's never done this before.

🔴 #LiveStream - #FactorioSpaceAge: The Quest to Beat this Game!
So we've got blue science rolling now and advanced oil processing researched, but we have to get heavy and light oil cracking set up. Then, bots (finally)! We'll establish a perimeter to our base following that. But we also need to upgrade our power, launch some rockets, and, and, and... so many things! All the things!

oof, we had no rain for over a month in Minnesota. It was a dry tinderbox until we got a couple of storms last week. Now I know where it all went. 😅
