Lucian Ban and Mat Maneri: Transylvania Dances at Bop Shop Records.
Using Bela Bartok's extensive folk music field recordings from the early 1900s as source material for launching points for incredible improvisations. They played samples from his wax tube recordings and displayed his photos of the areas and people he recorded along with his transcriptions. They also exposed profound connections across geography and time talking through their research. Quite a show!

@nprofile…acpk I was disappointed but many in the theater clapped at the end (why anyone does that in the first place I do not know) so I was probably in the minority.

Proudest moment from the weekend: Passing wind inside a Frank Lloyd Wright masterpiece.

Been in our house a little over a year and already on our third next door neighbor. The first was out probably within the first month and left a crate of classic country records on the curb when they left, which I now own and listen to.
The second was a musician who had been in the touring bands of Imagine Dragons and Dwight Yoakam and we got to see him perform with local bands quite a bit for the next 8 or so months.
Now our new neighbor is pursuing his PhD in tuba and we can hear his tooting regularly.
If I was a writer I might be inspired to write a book tracing the house through history and how it's cosmically connected to the musical universe or something.

Saw a very unique Miles Davis tribute tonight by faculty from a local music school, including Dave Chisholm who not only plays trumpet but is also a graphic novelist. He wrote a Miles Davis book and his awesome illustrations were projected above the stage. And the quintet was also joined by tap dancers who choreographed dances for the music. A lot to take in.
Check out Chisholm's books, they're great.

The hits keep coming in 26. The Bad Plus are calling it quits. 😢
I will enjoy their individual talents wherever they may be lent but sad to see that catalog of songs retired. Some of my all time favorites in there.

Closed out an incredible weekend in NYC with a solid one two three punch of musical delights.
Started with Eyal Maoz Band at Big Bar. Killer avant garde madness in perhaps the smallest venue I've ever seen music.
Then Sun Ra Arkestra with a tight 45 opening set, featuring 101 year old Marshall Allen, breaking his previous record as the oldest musician I've seen.
Then the weekend's grand finale and main purpose, night one of Yo La Tengo, Hanukkah night one. The obvious and lengthy Arkestra sit-in bore lots of tasty fruit. Great show. Wish there were more in store for me but ... heading home.

Widespread Panic at the Capitol Theater night two.
Best post Houser show I've seen? Best post Houser show I've seen. Sample size isn't all that big considering it's been twenty years but that was an epic Panic show. Warren Haynes and Jimmy Herring back to their old shit, god level guitar battles.
Satisfied and heading home.

Ten cent idea: Air Guitar BnB. Site listing free and cheap crash spaces for touring bands.

Yo La Tengo at Bowery Ballroom, night 4.
Made it back for another go! Was kinda hoping for a mostly trio show and my wish was granted. Pretty mellow with Ira on acoustic or keys for over half the show, but then they exploded in the final quarter with a massive 20+ minute slow building rocker.
Didn't appreciate the significance of Robyn Hitchcock's reunion with the Soft Boys in the opener but still enjoyed their Brit rock vibes and their return in the encore for some great covers.

Gillian Welch and David Rawlings at State Theater.
Need I tell you it was incredible? It all hit a little different than it did in July, more comforting warm blanket than exuberant return. The perfect salve for this disturbing present.
Two perfect concerts in the past three days, great way to roll into this last week of a long November. Thankful.
