in lua it's cooperative multithreading basically. coroutine.yield and you can manage the calling yourself. Since it's just a function call it can be put wherever to build something that doesn't have to deal with the nuts and bolts when you're being creative.
So in Arco, dialogue:line("tizo", "yo") makes the character tizo say yo, and waits for player input before continuing the script. Extra nice that prompts can just return whatever was picked. It can take as many frames as it needs and the rest of the game can keep in trucking.
Not as elegant perhaps when you drill down inside I guess, but it's explicit, so you get to say when interruptions can happen, and once you're in a coroutine anything using that functionality is just a normal function call.

any language with coroutines becomes very natural for this too. Eg our dialogue system has single scripts which wait for responses (no function boundaries) and this was extremely writer friendly.
I wonder about the similarities and differences vs catlangs
You can't concatenate them in most languages but you can just call them one after the other (or wrap them in a function which does that)

fwiw I was working on a "bespoke artisanal home baked ML" framework (on top of opengl so it'd run on non nv hardware etc etc) but the llm craze totally nuked any motivation on that.
Completely agree on the repulsiveness, basically.

all good haha. Maybe left or the collapse OS text editor would be usable elsewhere if you can fit and get their environment going

tldr no I don't have a library for you sorry
assuming you're going to talk to it from elsewhere over some sort of serial link, the unicode part should depend more on the unicode handling of that system as utf8 and terminal control codes can coexist pretty well.
If it's going to be rendering its own text though I think you might be in some trouble, haha. Most of the bare metal "this system couldn't run linux" text handling I've seen bakes in a lot of assumptions (eg no RTL), and many of those systems wouldn't have enough memory for much of a wide coverage font. Even as 1bit, 16x16 (pretty much required for cjk) is two MiB of storage just for the bmp characters. So I guess add external memory and page from it or something. If you know what kind of characters you're expecting that might change ofc and maybe you're fine with fixed width left to right layout.
The permacomputing crowd have probably scratched at this somewhat. @npub1z8r…mrq6 @npub1z2c…laft do you know of any text editors for bare metal or anyone that would?

nice to see, Johan! The skifree demake/spin off screenshot was intensely nostalgic I'll have to give the game a whirl some time soon

oh dude it can be such a time sink haha. Playing with weirdo features as well like sin activation and so on has sunk a lot of my nights over the past several years since the first versions of spudnet

Arco is out! https://store.steampowered.com/app/2366970/Arco/
3 years, a lot of blood sweat and tears from Franek, Bibiki, Fayer and myself, and it sure seems like a game haha. I'm sure there'll be a month or more yet of fixes and we still have to get loc in - but very glad to have it out the door and in everyone's hands 🏹
