I believe that there's a lot of dissonance here about the perceived capabilities of frontier AI models vs their actual capabilities. And I really wonder how and when the former will realign to the latter. If you feel this way, what would change your mind? And, would you ever pay for frontier AI models to understand their capabilities? (If not, it'll be up to the cheap and significantly worse models to change minds...)
Not talking about ethics at all here to be clear.

We have a technology that finds novel major mathematical proofs and zero-day vulnerabilities, autonomously organizes into structured communities with distinct roles, performs successful days-long attacks towards companies — how can people still talk about a stochastic parrot that only mixes together the training data? The evidence is overwhelming at this point

I'm happy to see Debian vote for "Responsible Use of Generative AI"! The motion is, in my opinion, very well written.

2025-12-16 18:31:47 UTC

- reply

@nprofile…t07n IMO, yes. I think there's a significant difference between sending laptop(s) to test for hardware support, and sending a significant amount of money to someone. But regardless of that, if somebody claims that framework has financially supported DHH, that's still misinformation, even if you think that there's no much difference between the two.

2025-12-16 18:14:16 UTC

- reply

@nprofile…9fp6 I really don't think that was the issue… it was only brought up by one, max two people. Still, the hardware was provided to test hardware compatibility (not monetized videos), and I think it would be a huge stretch to define "sending a machine to test hardware compatibility" as "financial support", since it does not help DHH finances at all.

2025-12-16 17:45:21 UTC

- reply

When I pushed back, I think many felt attacked and felt the need to state their disgust and unwillingness to buy from Frameworks. None of which was the topic of the discussion.
The point is, again: falsely claiming that a company financially supports a neo-nazi is, IMO, really bad behavior, regardless of what other bad things the company is doing.
Since we're not on Twitter, can we please have an adult conversation that's able to discuss things in their merit without feeling attacked? [2/2]

2025-12-16 17:42:07 UTC

Let's have a serious discussion. Yesterday I mentioned Framework, and somebody claimed that they have financially supported neo-nazi DHH.
To the best of my knowledge, this is misinformation. They *never* did that. And I think that falsely accusing a company of financially supporting neo-nazis is bad.
When I asked for a source, many chimed in, providing information about Framework's financial support to other projects or other kinds of support to DHH, thus missing the point entirely. [1/2]

2025-12-16 02:01:45 UTC

If I wanted to buy a Linux desktop machine, which would you recommend? I was thinking Frameworks, or maybe System76, or maybe the Steam Machine...

A couple of days ago I posted a link to an interview to (trans) congresswoman Sarah McBride by Ezra Klein (who had previously did two more episodes supporting trans rights). Of course, you don't have to like either person nor agree with the interview topic; however, I've been told that I had linked to an interview between *transphobes*.
I think I have the gist of where that comes from, and I disagree, but I'm curious to see if someone here has a strong case for that claim.

Let me add one thing: right now, one thing I pride myself is being quite slow to break (Linux) news. Our current goal is to do things slowly but well, waiting for things to play out before talking about them. With our current resources, the alternative is to move fast with extremely low quality articles. There's plenty of that already.
