I'm not judging anyone. My point is that we are no longer discussing software excellence, but personal preferences. I respect everyone's choices and expect the same in return. In other words, I don't really care about people preferences and here this is not the right place to discuss them.

A must-have if you're running Linux with systemd: https://codeberg.org/wvhulle/bootvine

After more than 3 months of silence, I think expecting even a short reply is reasonable, don't you think ?
Or perhaps we could look at it the other way around: maybe the sheer amount of work involved in maintaining these repositories is why the maintainer stopped responding? Who knows ? :) In that case, closing my PRs was probably the right thing to do, wasn't it ?
Anyway, it's not a big deal. I am actually considering moving away from Reticulum altogether. I am simply getting tired of all the mess in this ecosystem, especially when it comes to firmwares.

When you contribute to an open-source project and disagree with some of its decisions, what do you do ?
Do you spend your time, energy, and health fighting to change things, or do you accept that nothing in life is perfect and learn to dance in the rain ?
And if you can not, perhaps the healthiest choice is to step away, remain a user, and enjoy what the project has to offer.
Who knows ? Maybe one day, things will change, eventually.

This morning at work, I received again a AI generated answer to an issue. I was not really in the mood this morning, here's my reply:
```
Hello <redacted>,
Let's have a proper chat later, whenever is most convenient for you.
I do have one slightly unusual request: would it be possible **not to use AI** when discussing these kinds of things with me ? I genuinely prefer talking things through directly with people, **with all the imperfections that come with that**, rather than with a "clanker".
Quite often, the answers AI gives me are not quite right because it simply does not have all the context. I then have to spend time understanding the suggestion, checking it, and eventually working out the correct solution anyway.
I realise this request may sound a little odd, and it is absolutely nothing personal. But there is also a broader point behind it: if we gradually replace every interaction between colleagues with AI-generated answers, we risk removing quite an important part of what actually constitutes our work: discussing things, exchanging ideas, challenging each other and solving problems together.
And taken to its logical conclusion, if all those interactions are eventually delegated to AI, then at some point neither you nor I may have much of a job left, which is something I don't want.
Thank you.
```

2026-09-21 18:41:11 UTC

- reply

Fair enough :) And yes, 4GB may absolutely be excessive **for your use case**. It might not be enough for someone else. At that point, though, we are mostly talking about **personal preferences**, and everyone will have a different idea of what the “right” value should be. You see my point ? Is there really much to debate there ?
Anyway, my point was mostly about the framing: there is a difference between “*this default does not suit my system*” and “*this is another NixOS shenanigan thing*”.
Defaults are often compromises, and NixOS generally tries not to diverge from upstream defaults without a good reason to do so. Most of the time, those defaults come from upstream projects in the first place. I do not think NixOS should override them unless there is a good technical reason specific to NixOS.
And no worries about the personal-account part, I simply reacted because I follow the #nixos tag, and I am also a contributor to the project, working for free. I was reacting to the technical claim only.
There is also a human side to this: casual remarks can sometimes be more hurtful than intended when they concern work that people have put a lot of unpaid time and care into.
Your post was just a convenient example of something I see quite often in open-source discussions...
#nixos

2026-09-21 17:43:14 UTC

- reply

On a more personal note, I find this framing a little unfair, especially towards people maintaining open-source projects in their spare time, for free, for both the happy users and the unhappy ones.
Before calling something “shenanigans”, it is probably worth checking where the behaviour actually comes from and why that default exists.
I did a bit of research too, and in this case, **it is not really a NixOS default at all**: it comes from systemd-journald. `SystemMaxUse` defaults to 10% of the filesystem, capped at 4G. So on a 40G filesystem, having roughly 4G of journal is pretty much exactly the expected behaviour.
And `/var/log` **does not simply** “keep on growing” forever either: journald automatically removes old archived journal files to stay within its size limits. The default of `MaxRetentionSec=0` merely means that there is no *time-based* expiration policy.
Setting `SystemMaxUse=400M` may of course be perfectly reasonable for a particular server. But that is a local policy choice, not necessarily a broken default that needs to be “fixed”.
More generally, I wish we were a little more curious about why defaults exist before presenting them as silly mistakes. **They are often the result of trade-offs, discussions, and maintenance work by people (those volunteers again!) whose criteria may simply be different from yours.**
After all, there are usually more brain cells in a community than in any one of us. :)

I don't forget these aspects. I deliberately chose to put them aside. As I wrote, **I do not minimise them at all**, and I think they raise very important questions of their own.
What I am trying to understand here is something slightly different: *people's reaction when they are confronted with something that has already been produced, entirely or partly, with the help of AI*.
In other words, I am not asking whether using AI is socially, environmentally or politically neutral. **It clearly is not**. I am trying to understand why the knowledge that AI was involved in producing something can change our perception of the result itself. Basically, when it is too late to say anything !

I would not tag this as a sign of toxicity, please. You can definitely find better examples elsewhere, but I don't think this was intentional. There are so many pull requests and so few reviewers, that sometimes this can happen, sadly. I have been there myself, so I can relate. It's also very easy to lose its commit bit that it does not help, but that another issue, not fully related.
I sincerely hope that your next interactions with the project will be better, if any. There are maintainers doing their best everyday, giving their time and energy for free, regardless of the rest. Stay for those, just need to learn a bit who they are.
