The hot tub was great after the hike. We wanted to go from the pinnacle to the gap, but that’s an elevation difference of 900 feet. Going there is all downhill and we realized we had to lug ourselves all the way up again on the way back. So we turned around after about ⅔ of the way. But boy, were our legs sore after we made it back up.

It’s fall break at #UKY. We’re on our way to the Cumberland Gap for a hike to take in the fall colors. Will stop at a neat little local sandwich shop in Middlesboro. Then on to Morristown, TN to visit my American mom and check out her new hot tub (hopefully without the time machine). Should be a lovely 2 days.

Yeah, it’s amazing. I recognized so many games in the documentary. My favorites were Ant Attack, Atic Attac, Pssst, Moon Buggy, and of course The Hobbit. Those were the days. Not to mention that the first compilers I ever bought were Forth and Pascal on the Spectrum. So cool.

While looking for an Ethernet cable in my junk drawer, I found this ancient beauty. Totally forgot that I still had it. The device that started the #OpenWRT craze, an actual Linksys WRT54G. It’s still working. This thing will be great for my students’ capstone project. Unfortunately it’s so old, that even OpenWRT has dropped support. But the stock firmware will do, as I won’t be connecting it to the Internet.

Yeah, it’s wild that the boomers have adopted the commercial Internet so uncritically. I’m a Gen-X engineer who helped build the Internet. I ran our research groups’ network before university IT departments were even a thing. FidoNet and BBSes before that. I’m still on IRC and run my own mail server. I’m pretty happy that way. Anyone who wants to avoid the commercial Internet can still do so. Let’s hope we can keep it that way. I don’t care what the others are doing.

For a summer camp for middle schoolers sponsored by Toyota that will be held jointly at #UKY and the Georgetown, KY plant, I have designed a pinewood derby car that can be 3D-printed. We will teach the kids how to create their own parametric design using Onshape. They will then print and race their designs. Because the cars are considerably lighter than wooden ones, we will add slots for weights and the kids can test what weight placements work best.

I do disagree. Altman never completed a STEM education, and Musk has a BA in physics and an MBA. Also not exactly STEM, certainly not at a graduate level. But more to the point, every accredited STEM program has a mandatory ethics and standards component, which heavily draws from the humanities. And GenEd requirements have always been in place. These people just chose to ignore that part of the curriculum or were never even exposed to it.

This is what the #Mythbusters would call “going full scale”. My original double slit screen was just too small for the 23 cm #hamradio band to give meaningful results for wave interference. We'll see whether the curtain made out of conducting fabric will do any better. I will soon find out with my students in my wireless communications class. #STEM #STEMEducation

Im usually not a fan of spiced beers, because as a German I have been taught to respect the #Reinheitsgebot. But Sam Adams got the Old Fezziwig just right. Every year I look forward to buying it, but unfortunately it’s always in a variety pack. Anyway, cheers!

Earlier today I taught my students how to pull a VIN from a Toyota Camry’s #ODB2 port, using #MicroPython and the #CANPico board made by @npub1lm9…crh5.
Fun was had by all. Students were very impressed. Their next assignment will be to pick any other available data from the car and pull that.

Well, the real problem is that no one ever refills the blinker fluid.

Here's my students’ project prototype on an @npub1yd7…s0k2 perma-proto breadboard. It's a traffic light controller running on an ATtiny13A. Total parts cost: $6.75.

Yeah, with us being empty nesters now (both kids at #UKY, eating our own dog food), that was a good choice.

Had some Cornish game hens for the first time in a long time. They were delicious with mashed potatoes and Brussels sprouts. A good friend brought over some nice Cabernet Sauvignon to wash it all down.

If you’re there for a bit longer, try Fat Matt’s Rib Shack. Awesome BBQ.

Turnout for the annual #IEEE Lexington section and #UKY student branch welcome back cookout isn’t half bad. We got lucky with the weather. It was raining all morning but now it’s dry and not too hot.
