Trust is contextual.
If you follow someone, does that mean you trust that person to hold your money and babysit your kids? No, it does not.
But when you follow someone, you are literally giving that person the ability to select a piece of content, put it in front of your face, jam it through your eyes and into the back of your skull. The act of following equals entrusting that person with a tiny sliver of your time and attention.
So yes, you do trust the people you follow. Not in all the ways, but in at least one.

We recently (and quietly) added content search at https://brainstorm.world. Up until last week it was only profile search. And if you wonder how many of someone’s followers are bots, look at that person’s profile at Brainstorm; you can toggle the follower count between total (including bots/unverified) and verified only.

We do support basic WoT search with keywords using NIP-50; in addition to standard relay filters (kind, author, timeframe, etc), you can define a keyword and define the “observer” (what you call “wot_base”). We don’t yet have a “trending” feature per se, which would probably entail adding up reactions, replies, and zaps from verified sources, but that sort of thing is definitely on our roadmap. The problem with most “trending” features in nostr today is that they’re not personalized, they don’t know how to get rid of the spam effectively, and they still manage somehow to be popularity contests. Our roadmap addresses each of those issues.

LLMs will definitely make our lives a lot easier when it comes to tagging. Alice can put an agent in charge of an npub and tell it to go to town tagging whatever she wants it to tag. If the agent npub is in my WoT, or if I trust Alice and she tags the agent npub as hers, then I’ll probably want to make use of her agent’s taggings. If I think it (or any npub, human or agent-controlled) is doing a bad job then I tag it “Bad at Tagging” and I ignore all of its taggings.

If you’re looking for one specific topic, you can search for it today using keywords. It does a very good job of filtering out content authored by bad actors without being a popularity contest.
We’re slowing introducing Tags as a separate way to find content. The first way (currently implemented) is to search for keyword match from within the content. Tags are authored by someone else. For example: I can Tag you as a Podcaster (works today), or Tag your kind 30023 long form article as Decentralized Health (work in progress) if that’s what it’s about, and if your search string matches a Tag, you’ll see the profiles or articles that were Tagged by verified accounts.

Even better, we should work any generic DList into search results. I think we would need to augment the Decentralized Lists NIP with a way for the DList Header event to specify how to display list items. Example: a DList of GitHub handles should have an outlink GitHub.com/<handle>. The DList for RSS feeds could readily do something like that.

I guess part of my point is that being too eager to put people into categories — you’re either one of us or you’re one of the crazies — is itself a big part of the pathology inherent to toxic tribalism. And that often becomes an obstacle to discovering objective reality.

2026-08-22 18:08:13 UTC

This substack article by Nic Carter is well worth the read. There are a few things about it that I take issue with, including but not limited to Nic’s take on the blocksize war (mentioned only in passing in this article). I also get the sense that Nic veers into straw-manning: Here’s What All Those Crazies Believe, and We All Know Who They Are. Perhaps I am being pedantic and assuming too much, but I’d prefer Nic to describe Toxic Bitcoin Maximalism as a tribal narrative, one with strong opinions that are worth having but one that unfortunately ALSO contains a loose collection of toxic delusions and logical fallacies, and acknowledge that on an individual basis, most of Them (the Toxic Maximalists) definitely do not believe most of the aforementioned toxic elements.
Having said that, the realization that a toxic and self-destructive tribal narrative exists and has a strong emotional pull on — let’s be honest, virtually ALL of us — is an important one. We should give this narrative the sober deliberation it deserves, if only so that we can shield ourselves against its pathologies.
I have long believed that it should fall to neuroscience as a discipline to explain why tribal toxicity exists so prominently as a part of human nature. Not just bitcoin maxis, not just religions, but in political ideologies, academic disciplines, etc. Each of these communities is glued together by a tribal narrative. And those narratives sometimes become toxic. To draw attention to the pathology of Maximalism, as Nic does here, is worthwhile, but not enough. What do we do about it? “Expunge it!” would be the implication, in the absence of any other recommendations. But this would be akin to drawing attention to the pathological features of autoimmune disease to a crowd that has no understanding of the immune system. To treat autoimmune disease, ideally you will optimize the immune system, not expunge it — which would, of course, just kill the patient. But one cannot optimize something if one does not know what it is or why it exists. And one cannot treat the pathologies inherent to any tribal toxic narrative without understanding the tradeoffs that are associated with tribal narratives in the first place.
Tribalism exists for a reason. The so-called “toxic maxis” made valid arguments when they compared their toxicity to an immune system that, when done right, protects newbies from scam artists. But when do the actions of the immune system veer from beneficial into pathology? The naive belief, that we don’t need it (whatever exactly “it” is — don’t care, doesn’t matter) and are better off without it, is itself its own form of virtue signal. It is the failure to acknowledge and appreciate that a distinction exists between the greater tribal narrative (most of it non-toxic) from its toxic elements. And in my humble opinion, the temptation to straw-man is one of the early warning signs of the toxic tribal thought process. Beware its tradeoffs.
Is it possible, or desirable, to have a community of “bitcoin maximalists”, held together by — well, by whatever it is that holds communities together — without the pathologies? I would hope the answer is yes. In which case, the ideal outcome is not the defeat or the downfall of maximalism — which Nic’s article would seem to celebrate — but its cultivation and curation into a healthy state of being. A community with a healthy immune system, but without the pathology of autoimmune disease. A vast tribal bitcoin maxi narrative, minus the toxic fallacies and delusions. Would Nic agree? Don’t know, I’ve never met or discussed this with him. Tbh I don’t know if my immune system analogy has been explained very well. Maybe one day I’ll get my agent to help me do a better job.
tl/dr: Read Nic’s article. It’s not the final word, but it makes important contributions to the story of bitcoin, especially in the aftermath of the coldcard fiasco.

It only takes one follow by a non-spammy account to get a new user visible on Brainstorm, once scores are recalculated. Our default filter sets the cutoff at rank=2 (out of 100), and even with settings that low it does a remarkably good job of screening out the spam without punishing new users.

Title: The Open Timestamps Historical Preservation Initiative
Problem: AI deep fakes are being weaponized for politically motivated propaganda, 1984-style.
Example: a deep fake video of Reagan-era economist Art Laffer making statements and testimonials that rewrite history.
Solution: use #opentimestamps to notarize videos and documents of historically important figures such as Art.
Example: pair a hacker expert in OTS with a historian like Brian D of the Laffer Center
Urgency: very urgent, given the pace of technological advancement.

And I see you added an item to the list of Meshtadelians. One of the features we are working on is Brainstorm Communities.
Suppose you could go to communities.brainstorm.world/create and start a community of Meshtadelians. You’d give it a name and a description, select some options, click a button and you’d have a relay with read/write access restricted by default to members of the Meshtadelian community. (You could edit these permissions, as the relay owner.) Once you handpick a few members, membership would then be determined dynamically by the community via social proof (users claim membership, others endorse or veto those claim). Members could run community “mirror” relays as backup in case yours go down; and here’s the cool thing: as long as at least one member is running a relay, the Community can’t be rug-pulled, like what just happened on Twitter / X.
Sound interesting?

To integrate this into coracle or flotilla or any client, see https://brainstorm.world/developers. You'll be querying a relay with the search string and observer pubkey using NIP-50, not an api endpoint.
New users will by default be shown the "global" point of view (called the "House PoV"), which in this case means the PoV of NosFabrica. From a practical perspective, the global view will work perfectly well the vast majority of the time for the vast majority of users.
It's open source so you can run your own instance and define House (global) as hodlbod or flotilla or coracle or whatever pubkey you want.
To personalize scores, right now it's a one-time setup of 20-30 minutes but we're working on getting that down by at least an order of magnitude. And once it's set up, its' faster and more performant than whatever alternative you may be thinking about.

I only keep as many TAs as I want, no more, which for now is on the order of 100k. One (of multiple) advantages is speed. For any user who doesn’t have a TA from my personal PoV, if I need a score, I calculate it after I know I need it. Alternatively, I pull the TA from the PoV of someone I trust, if the option exists; and it will be relatively easy to find one if so. This is the kind of solution that will be highly effective at reducing the number of TAs by many orders of magnitude.

Exactly. Using TAs doesn’t mean publishing TAs for every npub in the universe. There are millions of junk npubs. Brainstorm publishes TAs for only a small subset of them.

When a billion users are on nostr, we’re not going to have one billion X one billion TAs. There are lots of practices we can implement that will make that unnecessary. In a nutshell: you will store TAs for the members of the communities that you care about and that you suspect you might be accessing frequently and with high enough probability to justify taking up the space in your memory. For everyone else, calculate scores when you need them, not before.

There are lots of strategies to address scaling that will be good enough. Pretty good ones, in fact.
My initial reaction to bitcoin was that it can’t scale. Every transaction in the world gets stored on everyone’s computer??!? Ridiculous!!!
Turns out bitcoin scaling is a challenge, but it’s not fatal to the entire endeavor and it’s a challenge we simply need to face. Same thing with precalculation and publication of WoT scores.

Precompute scores, publish as TAs, and you get personalized + cheap + fast.

The root of trust is you. That’s how GrapeRank works. It’s personalized by design. Everyone npub has a score of 0 by default, except for you; your score is pinned at 1 (or 100 %), meaning you’re 100 confident you’re not a bot or a bad actor. If you follow an npub, that score gets off zero. If that npub follows another npub, that score gets off zero, with the bump in proportion to the follow author’s score. Mutes and reports push the score down. If some random bot follows a bad actor, it’s ignored bc the bot has a score of zero by default.

What are you going to do hodlbod when the state comes to you and tells you that @npub1kpt…nhmz is not on their list of approved WoT score providers and you need to exclude the vertex endpoint from your client? With NIP-85, the state won’t ask you to do that bc you can’t. It doesn’t work that way.

PageRank doesn’t filter nearly as well as GrapeRank. Compare this prototype to PageRank:

Eventually we will be supporting the kind 0 solution in appendix 1 of nip-85. For now, the short list includes
Brainstorm.nosfabrica.com and others including @nprofile…zvyu — I’ll invite other SPs from the WoTathon chat group to advertise themselves in this thread.

For some reason almost everyone on my main feed is showing up as having a score 99% which I don’t think is correct 🤔

Does jumble have trust scores? I don’t normally use it but just checked it out and I don’t see any scores.
They should integrate trusted assertions like @nprofile…tx67 . That would be the best way to see your Brainstorm GrapeRank scores!

These are still processed manually, and I’ve been remiss in keeping up with it so haven’t triggered your scores yet.
But I’ll DM you the link to the new brainstorm version which triggers automatically. (Tell me if you get the DM, since DMs have really been hit or miss for a while)

I created an issue to add this as a new feature on our brainstorm server. Feel free to add comments or suggestions.

I think there’s a good chance we’re going to do it — we just haven’t yet bc we’ve been more focused on making sure the main product is stable.
Has anyone else implemented appendix 1 yet, enough for you to have something to play with?

Every Brainstorm user gets a personalized pubkey, like your own personalized Brainstorm Assistant, which publishes scores on your behalf. That’s the pubkey that’s in your 10040 personal preferences event.
We don’t currently publish a kind 0 profile for this pubkey but it’s on our roadmap. Probably as an opt-in feature. NIP-85 was recently updated to support WoT service provider discoverability guidance — see Appendix 1 of the merged NIP.
Suppose you don’t have a WoT SP and don’t know which ones are good. Following the recent NIP-85 update, you will be able to look through your follows, find who has a 10040 event, pull the WoT assistant pubkey for the “rank” metric (or perhaps for all available metrics), pull that pubkey’s kind 0, and extract the WoT SP website. You’d get a report that says something like “Looking for a WoT SP? N1 of your follows use WoT SP A at www.wot-sp-a.com, N2 use SP B, etc.”

Could do what @nprofile…54jr is doing: pull the whitelist of 100k+ pubkeys from Brainstorm and use that not only to delete old events but also to filter new events. I’d be curious to know how many GB of data that would prune away. Might want to use some more permissive settings to prune less aggressively.

I had previously signed up at brainstorm.nosfabrica.com to have WoT scores calculated. Nostria was able to communicate with the brainstorm server directly and trigger recalculation.

2026-03-20 23:54:05 UTC

I just triggered recalculation of my personalized web of trust directly from the nostria.app/settings WoT page 🤯
And I can see the same scores in @npub16x7…a44x that I see in @npub142g…xrj0. Which means my WoT is not only personalized … it’s PORTABLE. 🤯🤯🤯

At @nprofile…59ml we are working on a tool that will be useful in exactly this scenario. Which, as we all know, is going to be a recurring problem!
Currently, the compromised account has a high WoT score using any of the currently-available WoT scoring algos. But GrapeRank has a remedy: NIP-56 reports. The GrapeRank score is currently visible to anyone who uses Brainstorm (still in alpha) on @nprofile…3a29 , @nprofile…hnuv , and any client that uses NIP-85 Trusted Assertions. A sufficient number of NIP-56 reports from trusted accounts will drive his GrapeRank score from 100 to 0.
We are currently tweaking the default GrapeRank parameters that determine how many NIP-56 reports it will take to counteract the almost 2k trusted follows. If you would like to assist us in this process, then issue a NIP-56 report (report type can be other, something bespoke like “compromised”, or whatever you think is appropriate) of the compromised account, which is this one: @nprofile…h8le
#WoT FTW!
