👇 More evidence that a lot of work will be required to achieve the [@coar_repositories](https://mastodon.social/@coar_repositories ) vision (which I have long embraced) to make repositories a fundamental building block of the #scholcomm system. While progress is being made e.g. with adoption of the Notify protocol and #FAIR Signposting, recent findings by @npub1d84…7w7t and the below by @npub1lmj…khsq (with focus on how repositories deal with machine access in the age of over-agressieve #AI bots), suggest a “1 Step Forward, 3 Steps Back” pattern.

it’s great!!! unless I’m overlooking it, an aspect that’s missing is open content platforms struggling to remain operational as a result of excessive bot access, and, as a defense, close down machine access affordances. eg https://mastodon.social/@zackwhittaker/117361287574317520

I’m trying to get this straight. There’s not just one, but a cabal, of Bond villains who publicly claim and demonstrate that they’re working on technologies that will destroy humanity within the coming 5 years. And there’s not a single country on earth that mobilizes a Bond to neutralize them? What am I missing?

This 👇 #MarginaliaSearch is a really interesting search engine. I wonder why URLs are obfuscated in search results though.

Researchers spend significant amounts of time to add non-traditional contributions (e.g. radio interview, blogpost) to their institutional research information management system. With colleagues at SURF, @npub1lmj…khsq and I devised a Mastodon-based approach to automate that tedious job for Dutch researchers. And, based on lessons learned, we wrote a blueprint to encourage others to make the same functionality available to their communities. My personal utterly negative experience is about departure. I’ve been the victim of Ryanair’s attempts to meet their Key Performance Indicators (and hence avoid customer refunds) once too many. As an example, I’ve literally stood for 30+ minutes with all other passengers on a hot jetway so they could meet their boarding deadline. It took so long that several passengers had to go back in the terminal because nature called.

I have pertinently decided not to ever fly Ryanair again. Even if they have direct flights to places I’d love to visit. You want to start your vacation on a totally wrong footing because of the humiliation that is a (the only?) guaranteed part of your travel package, go for Ryanair. You really want a vacation but can’t afford an alternative carrier to get you there, I dare suggest to find an alternative destination. Wonderful places all over, even close to home.

In which it becomes obvious that the overall term AI was (re)introduced to cause confusion. Focused Machine Learning on well curated datasets and “general purpose” LLM learning on all human knowledge that can be grabbed are thrown in the same AI basket while they have fundamentally different characteristics, ethical considerations, and goals.
