For many apps, it’s an easy transition. For others, like Triode, you need to dig into _how_ and _when_ the app gets used.

It's a momentous day for Mac developers: you can now provision a device running in a VM. Whether you use VirtualBuddy, UTM, or another app, Xcode can now build, run, and debug apps on multiple versions of the macOS without having to reboot.
This includes apps that have entitlements for iCloud and other Apple services.
Provisioning for new VMs is automatic, existing VMs need a bit more attention - see the thread for more info.
Thanks to everyone who made this happen!

Something I've been working on for awhile: a better `df` for modern Macs.
The built-in version is pretty terrible if you just want to see how much space your disks and shares have - tons of Time Machine and other read-only filesystems cluttering things up. And incredibly long mount points for shares.
So I made a script called `dfn` that gives you output that matches what you see in the Finder.
Enjoy!

I've been using xScope A LOT more than normal (and I normally use it ALL THE TIME).
When something like Liquid Glass comes along, you want to inspect and measure it.
Look at the refraction effect in the Loupe, measure offsets with Guides, check corner radii with the Ruler, use Frames to see navigation element changes from iOS 18, and much more.
There's a reason why the promo code is HANGOVER50 😉

I'm going to come out and say something that no one at Apple wants to hear:
The Group Labs suck.
The concept and motivation behind them are excellent, but the implementation is absolutely wrong. They assume that no one has a learning curve.
And we all know that's not true during the week of WWDC. There is *SO MUCH* to absorb. And so little time to do it.
Yet we're supposed to "ask questions, get advice, and follow discussion" about something we don't know anything about. Yet.

Before you touch any code on iOS 26 that uses a keyboard, take a look at this:
https://github.com/chockenberry/KeyboardAvoider
It's wildly broken in beta 1.
I think I understand what the underlying problem is, but that is also an indicator that layouts are going to change just as wildly as we go through the beta period.

Prediction: There are going to be so many bad UIs because developers look at the shader output and think “that's so cool!” — and then they never think about the usability of that glass surface.
Actually, that's not a prediction — it's a promise. The same thing happened when Aqua introduced transparency to the masses at the turn of the century. So little alpha, so little thought.
On today's hardware, making things _look_ cool isn't too hard. What's going to be hard is making things _work_ cool.

2025-06-12 19:53:14 UTC

Approachable concurrency in Swift is such a welcome change.
It starts with the assumption that app developers have a simplified understanding of the language and its capabilities. Then it provides a way to extend that knowledge as their needs change.
So much better than "here's a hard hurdle you have to jump over to start".
Congrats & thanks to all who worked on it!

2025-06-10 22:51:58 UTC

Pro Tip: Don't waste 5 hours trying to build apps with Xcode 26 in a VM.
It just doesn't work.
You either get problems with the VM device ID (using automatic) saying that the device hasn't been registered (and it has, both on the provisioning portal and in the downloaded .provisionprofile).
If you try to go the manual route, you'll end up with Gatekeeper failures.
Signing to run locally doesn't work either: any frameworks you try to load (dyld) are rejected because Team IDs don't match.

The Apple Design Awards is the greatest casualty of the new WWDC format.
It was the most exciting evening of the week. A room packed with developers, each of which thought their app had a chance to win, and equally excited to see which of their peers would win.
And when John Geleynse & Shaan Pruden called you up, it was magic. You felt the love in the room, held a cube, and saw your hard work on screen.
Now it's basically a press release. The work is still awesome, the recognition is not.

I have a sneaking suspicion that the “26” is only for marketing, much like Sequoia/Ventura/Sonoma are today, except across all platforms.

We've entered day 10 of waiting for a TestFlight beta app review on macOS. Have tried all the tricks, like submitting new builds, but there has been absolutely no movement.
While Apple is doing everything it can to maintain the tight control it has over the App Stores and a huge revenue stream, we're out here just trying to get some volunteers to test our software. And failing.
This is bullshit that no developer on any platform should have to deal with. Bureaucracy for its own sake.

It never ceases to amaze me that App Store descriptions can't take "<" or ">".
There is very strict validation on the input. This includes allowing Unicode block 67 (General Punctuation) so "⁕" is allowed. And disallowing other blocks, like 209 with Emoji: 😞
But it's just too hard to convert < and > to < and > or whatever their backend CMS can handle.

I recently got one of these for my new Mac Studio and it's a phenomenal product for external storage:
https://amzn.to/44AAMQz
It's a solid piece of aluminum with a circuit board where you can mount a NVME M.2 stick (like they use in the Playstation).
Real world transfer speeds are 3.5+ GB/s on Thunderbolt 5 (~1 GB/s on TB 3, ~2.5 GB/s on TB 4).
The enclosure is $120 and a 2 TB NVME is in the $120-150 range.
A great way to keep VMs, photos, and other big stuff out of Apple's pricey storage.

• Media key support (e.g. fn for playback controls)

WebKit folks: The Web Inspector can easily hang an app that uses a JSContext in the latest builds. Just submitted a sample project for this regression:

It's muscle memory for me to close the inspector while working on connectors in Tapestry Loom. If I happen to be paused at a breakpoint, I have to restart the app (and lose the state that I was debugging in the first place).

We still have a ton of work to do, and I’ll have more to say about that as the week progresses, but after 20 months of working on this thing, it feels great that everyone can finally see it:

“Apple is blowing it with developers. Full stop.”
There, I said it.

@nprofile…ee4l Oh yeah. That first year was a trip - and remember that website that tracked average review times?

Did someone in App Review die?
I've been very busy for the past week and totally forgot that we have a watchOS app in review. This is not a first: I'm guessing these stalls are caused by someone getting a watchOS-only app and not having a device to test it on.
Pro tip: Don't ever release a watchOS-only app - this is just one example of all the edge cases of going that route. /cc @nprofile…0skf

The first screenshot of what would become Tapestry.
You have to start somewhere, even if it’s labeled ????? and ugly as hell.

You know those gas pumps with the annoying video ads that blast away while you refuel?
They often have unlabeled MUTE buttons.
Try pressing buttons around the screen, you’ve got nothing to lose and a bit of peace to gain…

Fascists are going to need technology to succeed.
And we know more about that than they do.
Put dipsticks in your code.

We're all waiting patiently for the Cybertruck to become a distant (and ugly) memory.
But when you post a link to an article that has no citations or other references for confirmation, you're contributing to the misinformation problem.
Be critical, even when it confirms your views.

@nprofile…g8jv Sorry for the direct request, but I can't find anything about this:
Is there a way to force a login to an instance instead of getting the /redirect/statuses/<id> interstitial?
We'd like to support on-instance links to content, but when using an in-app browser, you're probably not logged in. So the links fail (and there's no way to login to remediate).
If this needs to be a Github issue, l'm happy to make one, just not sure where.

Google is poisoning its own well. The only question is if they will come to their senses before it’s too late.

If you thought the Cybertruck couldn’t look any more awful, you were wrong.
Today I saw one that was painted matte pink.
Holy shit.

I did not expect JavaScript and Swift to agree on this:
JavaScript:
> x = NaN
NaN
> x == NaN
false
> NaN == NaN
false
> isNaN(x)
true
Swift:
let x = Float.nan
x == Float.nan
> false
Float.nan == Float.nan
> false
x.isNaN
> true
I also did not expect NaN to not be equal to itself.
The IEEE thought about this a lot more than I did: if x and y are equal, then x - y = 0. And if either value is not a number, that can't be true.

The only use case I can see for this feature is plagiarism.
Select a passage in Wikipedia or wherever, and change it to make it your “own”.
Geezus. What a thing to put front and center.

Why is “Writing Tools” the first thing shown in Safari’s context menu? It’s pointless and makes it harder to get at the things I actually use: “Lookup” and “Translate”.
Some manager at Apple decided that showing off a new feature was more important than usability. That’s bullshit.

Xcode Pro Tip: If you use SwiftUI previews, you probably have a big ~/Library/Developer/Xcode/UserData/Previews/Simulator Devices folder.
Like, _really_ big.
It looks like the best way to clean these up is using xcrun:
$ xcrun simctl --set previews delete all
My guess is that these get left around when Xcode or previews crashes. Which never happens, of course.

@nprofile…gftj @nprofile…ru66 It’s not possible without user intent.
The only way to get what’s playing is through the Shazam APIs (which samples the audio stream, not the now playing metadata). And that can only be triggered by a button press.

Normal folks are going to trust Apple to be making good choices, when in reality it’s just a machine doing some statistical analysis.
We’ll soon have another holiday task while visiting family. After you turn off the motion smoothing, you’ll be turning off the email summaries.
