@nprofile…8clk InDesign has script-based ordering of the font menu, which relies on (sometimes interesting) heuristics. It’s possible that your font cannot clearly be identified, possibly containing multiple Indic scripts? The codepoint ID seems to look for is 0x0985

@nprofile…8clk It’s a TTF-only issue. I observed the same in SS4, but not in the OTFs. It’s curious (and probably involves some InDesign black magic) as all the relevant tables are exactly the same.
Filed it ages ago, I should check back on the status.

@nprofile…8clk @nprofile…7kma Since Family(Other)Blues usually correspond to the Regular (or most representative style) alignment zones, I never asked myself that question.
Changing the order seems like a bug indeed.

2026-03-22 15:31:39 UTC

- reply

@nprofile…8clk @nprofile…7kma Oh, I conflated “zones” and “blue values” – of course there are also “other blues”; also blue. So, your statement is correct.

2026-03-22 14:55:51 UTC

- reply

@nprofile…8clk @nprofile…7kma Not all blue values round towards the top of the zone! It depends on the size, zone type, blue scale, and blue shift.
Also, TrueType zones behave the same, don’t they? 😆

@nprofile…8clk @nprofile…mrzw BlueFuzz has not been set in Adobe’s Fonts for many years (going on decades). But I think rasterizers support it, the fuzzing being a very simple concept.

2026-03-22 05:40:27 UTC

- reply

@nprofile…8clk The “z slightly above the baseline” is entering esoteric territory. We are taking about digital fonts which will always live on a grid. With specifying the alignment zone, you effectively want to undo that small optical correction, so I guess having the z sit on the baseline is the pragmatic solution to the problem.
I am not saying that Frutiger was wrong, but I do know that type designers are great at convincing themselves of very peculiar theories. To me, an off-baseline z in a digital font would look unintentional.

2026-03-22 05:34:13 UTC

- reply

@nprofile…8clk In this case, it’s conceivable for the flex point to sit on the baseline, while the rest is hanging off below. At least that’s how I would approach it.
I agree that unexpected zones shouldn’t be inserted, but I’ll have to conduct some tests.

- reply

@nprofile…wguy @nprofile…5g26 @nprofile…fnwc @nprofile…2mms This is going into semantics, but I’ll offer my perspective anyway:
A lot of designers also produce fonts, and FWIW the “producer” also works with friendly aka readable names. The activities of “designing” and “producing” in a larger sense are very closely related.
My thinking comes from here:
adobe-type-tools.github.io/afdko/MakeOTFUserGuide.html

2026-03-07 22:57:29 UTC

- reply

@nprofile…5g26 @nprofile…wguy @nprofile…fnwc Something that’s in production isn’t final, is it? As such, I don’t see the logic of calling the name ending up in the font “production name”.
In any case, I’ve been using “friendly name” for the name the designer uses, which is easy to grasp in comparison to a name the designer has little control over (name in font binary).

@nprofile…cqgf I don’t think the intent is mischievous in any case. It’s not clear to me if there is a way to explain what’s happening within such a message. It might also be that Adobe is particularly susceptible to this, since the apps are part of a (more or less compatible) ecosystem.
I remember one such message some time ago: “Illustrator would like to record your screen” – uproar from the community.
Result: eyedropper tool no longer works beyond the application bounds.

@nprofile…0wzw @nprofile…98sm @nprofile…gz7c @nprofile…jzgx I like to use pyenv, it’s a solution in between a virtual environment (too cumbersome for daily use IMO) and system Python (don’t touch).
What was important to understand (for me) is that Python is basically just a few files in a folder – that’s how applications like RoboFont and DrawBot have their “own” Python.
I know everyone has strong opinions on this, so take this as one of many options.
