@npub1urx…v0z4 it is for these reasons we need something better than open source. An ethical open license.

2026-10-13 18:13:42 UTC

I think FLOSS is no longer good enough because neutrality seems to allow the FLOSS community to wash its hands off thhe responsibility of the tech they build.
I am not sure what thhe best system is because the issue of who gets to decide what is ethical still exists.
But I think there should be a move towards an open ethical license.

A #Solarpunk tv show would be like Gilmore Girls but more overtly political. It would be a world that beat the polycrisis and while everyone treats it as normal, it would be so different.

I don't think you can do that with the atom bomb.
In the 1970s paper it highlights a good example.
The Nazi Death Camp in its design is not neutral. it is embedded with evil values.
I don't think there's a neutral death camp.

The technology can't exist without the people who make it is exactly why I and many academics have noted for many years that technology is not neutral because it is embedded with our values.
We can critique it on that front on whether it is good or bad. Saying technology is not neutral highlights the people and society in which that technology is built in.
"The technology itself can't be evaluated morally without the context it exists in."
That's what it means to say tech isn't neutral

2026-07-18 00:20:54 UTC

- reply

Yes but you have to have a society that would conceive to do that. A society that thinks it is okay to use the atom bomb.
As I said. A society that doesn't think it is okay to use the atom bomb, won't build it.
Technology embeds the values of the society that builds it.

2026-07-18 00:12:52 UTC

- reply

The example often given is, the atom bomb can only be created in a society that believes in its use. Another such society, constructed a different way, may not desire to make such a thing.
I believe it is only through capitalist means and ends that LLMs could ever be created in such a way that they do such extensive harm.
In a non-capitalist society, LLMs would have no value.

I see. I could share the original 1970s paper if it helps. https://www.jstor.org/stable/27106634
As you know this is an area of continued research and recognition.
"Deciding that technology has inherent moral value outside of how people chose to use it makes it too easy to avoid reckoning with the social context of technology."
This doesn't make sense to me or what I think is meant by neutrality. It is because technology is made in the context of society that it can't be neutral.

I think then this FEP looks like the place to look at, and to have conversations with people who run open relays in that list you shared a while back. otherwise, tags.pub would have to implement the consent model that to be fair the entire infrastructure should support.
for my part, I'll have to look at it another time. My capacity is limited at the moment and i have small worries about github that i hope places like codeberg and others may one day fully solve. but thank you x

My first answer would be the most relevant. we are responsible for each other as long as we are complicit in that harm.
With acknowledgement that there is no ethical consumption under capitalism.

response in what sense? Are we more responsible for the direct and indirect actions of citizens of our own country than others? yes.
Are we more responsible for our citizen's safety than others... sort of but no. We should care about other countries safety.

Many of the examples you've pointed to as what is claimed to be solarpunk, aren't necessarily what I would describe as solarpunk. and the ones that I agree with, are either co-opted away from their intended goal such as the chobani ad, or didn't do well financially. Strange World.
Although they exist as artefacts, they aren't mainstream or desired. If anything, utopias and fiction with no real villains aren't marketable, IMO 2/5

Judging from the articles I can see, there doesn't seem to be much that tell me about how the Venezuelan people are doing, whether better or worse. it's just focused on the leaders or on Maduro.
From what I understand, most Venezeulans don't care about oil being taken by the US. They know that's why they are there. It's said to be a worthwhile price to pay for Maduro being removed. It's not a lot to go on.

The folks who got to the top of this system including the space tech billionaires were never going to be convinced of that value They're xenophobic, racist, misogynists and white supremacists.

I'd like to believe that is all it takes. But it's also hard to look at NASA, while the US is in the midst of a coup. A fascist takeover. If I had wanted to come watch the space launch, I wouldn't be able to. Not in the country and not in the state. It just wouldn't be safe.
I'm excited for Artemis, but unlike Apollo with the backdrop of the civil rights movement, all I see is an immense takeover suffering because of the world billionaires built. #space #sls #artemis2 #nasa

I'd say if it's safe for you to do so to go to a protest for a cause you care about. There are useful skills you learn when you do... there's new community that may open up, and when things get really pressing the next time, you'll know what to do next time. You'll be prepared.
