Low Quality Facts: police in rural UK don’t carry guns because they carry small badgers, proven to be a more effective deterrent to serious crime and much much cuter.

@nprofile…5uqu Hmm. I have one that claims a number of hours runtime so let me go and have a look at it as I bought it a couple of years ago and have since forgotten the make, model and specs. I’ll DM you once I have the details.

Is there any room left for businesses that offer services that don’t include AI in some form? I’m sat here on vacation, staring at the beautiful vista infront of me, drink in hand, trying to think of something I can do in the software space that will both be interesting to me, make a little money so I can stop working for clients who are drooling and muttering “agents” on repeat. Because I just don’t know what other field I can pivot to at this late stage of my career, and daring international jewel thief sounds like a lot of work and probably involves lasers and car chases through little German towns.

The hanta virus thing could not be a more text book test of pandemic response and we utterly flubbed it as a species. It was handed to us on a platter. All the patient zeros were literally contained on a ship out at sea - this was like the training area in a computer game before you start playing for real and what do we do? Let them all go off on their merry way to infect everyone they come into contact with as they jet set off around the planet. Everyone take a bow.

Vibe coding is when it’s 1am, everyone else in the house is asleep, you’ve got your favourite drink and your favourite music playing while you goof around writing some code in your favourite language or trying out a new language just because you love learning new stuff while chatting to cool people also chilling out late at night indulging on whatever hobby makes them happy.

@nprofile…pfuj @nprofile…55k5 The tech bros all think this is an amazing, humbling piece of software. One of them, a guy called Theo, analyzed the code, in the laziest way possible, by asking Claude. Claude ofcourse gave it a 7/10 (losing some marks only because there were no tests and there were a few “god” files that had many thousands of lines of code in them). Incredible. No words.

“Oh that sucks I’m so sorry you have to protect yourself from Covid still. I on the other hand have had it a few times and have not been affected. Well, I have these headaches and I can’t handle alcohol anymore and I have developed a weird reaction to fruit and there are days when I have no energy, but that’s just getting old isn’t it?”

“Wearing pants is encouraged but not required” - has any fucking business ever put that on the door? No. Hospitals shouldn’t have to water protections down with garbage policy like “encouraged but not required” incase they upset someone. Insist on masks. Make it just the way things work. No mask no fucking service*. This western self-absorbed “surely this doesn’t apply to me” mindset is killing people and ruining lives.
*obviously there will be some exceptions here

@nprofile…clhj @nprofile…rtua I haven’t been back to UK in 15 years and I was watching a video of someone doing some EV related tests on a road in Wales, and I saw a pickup truck pass by on screen and I had to do a double take. Not you as well Wales! Not you!

DoorDash changed the way tips work. You can no longer include the tip as part of the initial order - you are expected to add a tip separately, meaning that it’s very easy to forget. This is leading to pleading IMs from dashers reminding the buyer to please tip because it’s no longer part of the ordering process. This is sad and annoying for all involved. I have to assure my dashers that I will tip them roughly every other order.

I think it’s King Charles’ birthday tomorrow - an unfortunate coincidence. So on one side of the Atlantic you will have people celebrating their Kings birthday and on the other thousands of protests against a self-declared king celebrating his birthday North Korea style?

Subconsciously 99% of the planet is relying on medical science to produce a cure for long COVID because we now live in a world where cure is better than prevention and brunch is more important than your long term health prospects. The braying unwashed scientifically illiterate and selfish greedy self-involved masses have spoken.

2025-05-23 22:49:18 UTC

Let’s try something. I’ll keep avoiding illness and you keep catching a virus that does cumulative long term damage, and every year we will exchange notes on how things are going. Deal?

2025-05-23 22:49:18 UTC

Most of the interesting stuff that has happened to me professionally took place before smartphones and social media so I have no photos or posts or anything to remember them by. My first ever conference with Novell in Florida, where we had Islands of Adventure all to ourselves for an evening, or the mock award ceremony where they bussed in paid “fans” to cheer and scream for us as we made our way across the red carpet. The black tie event at Pinewood Studios. All these things are lost, like tears in rain.

Explaining being immune compromised during airborne plague times for the brunch set:
Say you are very allergic to shellfish. What we’re gonna do sweethearts is we’re gonna grind up lobster and crab and prawn shells into a fine powder and we’re going to spray the room with it, and then we’re gonna put some in your coffee and your food and then we’re gonna blow some of it in your face, mmkay, and then we’re gonna gaslight you while your throats close and your faces puff up. Then we’re gonna pass some laws making it mandatory that everything is covered in shellfish powder. And if you don’t like it, well, just stay at home mmkay?

I think that if you simply renamed Covid and then announced that there is a virus <whatever new name> running rampant and it causes <list of horrible chronic illnesses> and 700 have already died from it this week, people might actually respond. Covid has been given the best PR of any pathogen in living memory, people think it’s warm and fuzzy now. It needs rebranding.

If you wear a MAGA hat and other trump accessories when going through the border does this yuuugely reduce your chances of being disappeared?

2025-04-04 19:07:52 UTC

Americans would lose their shit if other countries just unilaterally made decisions that royally fucked them over for no reason.

2025-04-04 19:07:52 UTC

Just watched The News Agents show (British current events radio show with video - yeah, I don’t get it either) and I mostly agree with their assessment on US except for their dismissal of any fears that people have about travel to the US. I suspect they haven’t seen the list of people who have been disappeared at the border and held with no due process for days and weeks, not knowing if they will ever be allowed to go home. I mean, it’s two wealthy successful white male media personalities so they can’t imagine ever having problems.

@nprofile…wuyc So, and excuse me if this is indelicate, why the fuck do we pay so much for insurance when the “cost” of vehicular manslaughter is $1150? I was under the impression that the punishment for even accidental death would be a million $ and some jail time or at least community service or losing license. Wtf.

Nothing says richest country on earth than “we are too cheap to pay staff to keep our national parks open for tourists” or “school children should get a job and pay for their own school lunches”.
