I own a Googlebook and a MacBook Air. Both have their advantages and disadvantages, but which is the one I will reach for when it's time for me to take a trip? The answer may (but really probably will not) surprise you:

My problem, such as it is, is that I like the concept of a foldable phone more than I have an actual use for one. I already have an array of tablets I don't use, and a cell phone I use constantly. Knowing what I know about myself I would just end up using the outside screen 98% of the time and spent an extra thousand bucks for 2% of my usage. I'm too cheap to square that math.

2026-08-19 13:56:07 UTC

Okay but I don't want to kill my keyboard, the way my creative brain works when I type is different from how it works when I talk, and the former is how I write novels, which is how I get paid. Also the last thing we need in the world is more people muttering to themselves in public spaces.

Love Death + Robots Vol. 4 is now out on Netflix, and I wrote two of its episodes: "The Other Large Thing" and "Smart Appliances, Stupid Owners," both directed by Oscar-winning animator Patrick Osborne. I hope you enjoy both, and the entire terrific new season.

The problem, aside from the product recalls, the fact you can die inside when it catches fire and the doors lock, the substandard programming and the fact they look like the entire genre of vaporwave shit itself in vehicle form, is the fact that at this point it is known the only people who want one are fascists and/or smug dicks with raging compensation issues. This is the truck you buy when you hate yourself and everyone else.

Over on Whatever today, I talk about how the translation of fiction from one language to another isn't just a matter of exact words, and why I now have it as a contract point that the translations of my novels have to be done by humans, not by machine or "AI":

2025 is not a great year so far

2025-01-01 17:35:37 UTC

Happy New Year! Today is an important day for me: it's the 20th(!) anniversary of the release of Old Man's War. On my site I write about how this unusual, not-actually-great release date turned out to be a blessing, and where the book and series go from here:

I am frequently asked what is the "best" way for people to buy my work so that the most money gets to me, enough so that I've finally written a primer about it to point people toward, and it also covers my opinions re: libraries, used bookstores and pirating:

And now, the last stack of New Books and ARCs of 2024, featuring quite a few snazzy limited editions by the always fabulous Subterranean Press. What here would you like to take into the new year?
