My non-existent AI usage is quite rooted in the fact that I don't want to support this resource draining theft monster, but if we put that aside, if that wasn't an issue, then what?
I hear about what people use AI for, but I cannot figure out how any of it would be helpful for me.
Sure, I could ask it to write some code for me, but I would spend more time reviewing the code and making sure it did exactly what I wanted, than just writing it myself.
Write a grocery list? I hear people use it for that! .... I WANNA DECIDE WHAT TO EAT MYSELF THANKYOU!
I could use it to help me write music! ... that... I would not have written then, it would not be mine, I would not feel like I had accomplished anything, I cannot lie to myself and think "I made this!"... I either make it myself or I can just listen to music other people made.
Home automation! ... What??? I wanna know that what I want to happen, happens when I want it to happen!
Call me old fashioned, but I am at a loss for what AI could help me with.

I didn't know much what to make of the FreeBSD bit on the Content Review, someone bad punching at something, this time FreeBSD, did kinda put the something, this time FreeBSD, in everything else than a bad light, because shit people generally don't punch at shit things.
When later I read about the shit feedback you are getting, I thought it was related to something else.
These FreeBSD redditters, who, not affiliated with FreeBSD project as you say, at least made me dig a bit more. And, well, I have at least discarded FreeBSD as an alternative to Linux as a result of this.

Young people are offered no future. Instead of trying to mend the problems we see, we accelerate them, more obsessed with securing our own pension and investment funds, rather than making sure there even is a future for retirement after us.
Did we think, there would not be protests? That this would be accepted, without a fight?
I am ashamed of my generation (*). We know better. We are young enough to be affected, but know we will be close enough to the end not to "worry too much"
(*) excluding those that for whatever reason was already left "in the dirt" because caring for them costed too much.

I assumed that much, but it is still a win for big tech.
And, I mean, I get it, it is sad to see so many projects expose really shitty attitudes, and it ends up feeling like it is all worthless to even try.
Given that this is what big tech is kinda wanting, it is a major win.
But it still better than people use a project that refuse to take a stand against fascism, than a product from a company that actively supports the worst of them.
This doesn't mean I'm not in the process of replacing Linux with OpenBSD, though...

This is why we leave Apple
This is why we cancel and move subscriptions.
This is why we self host.
This is why we pick community run projects to donate to. We vet projects to make sure the money are not going to fascists, and we donate what we save on going away from the giants to open, community driven projects and independent artists.
This has never ever been more important.

LLM is absolutely amazing! It is both empowering women, while simultaneously shifting the power women stole from men, back to men.
Appears to be a highly adaptive technology.
Seriously, though, what if we focused on the main bit, creating a less hostile workspace so more women that wanted to be coders, did not get pushed out of the field.

But that was kinda the premise of the post I replied to. People don't switch to linux because linux users "are not kind and helpful enough" - and my experience - that people don't really want to switch, they just use the "linux users are not helpful enough!" to justify staying with companies they know they should really leave.
So, if we "want to beat big tech" we need to "work for free"
Our "kid" is 30 years old, still does not know how to drive a car, manages fine without it. I taught him to use computers because I realized that would be essential knowledge.
That bit paid off.
We can make our society less dependent on tech, like it was not all that long ago. But people like the convenience it gives. We could build good, publicly funded solutions, but people don't want to pay.
I don't know what the solution is, but blaming linux users for not being "helpful and friendly enough" is not the answer to anything...

There is no one to one mapping between cars and computers, so your mapping is your interpretation.
"You are saying that..."
I am saying that average computer user should understand fundamental parts like files, folders, installing stuff, simple maintenance. Not overly complex stuff. Not something that would be hard for a person to learn if it was part of their usage in school.
Like, I don't know much about car repair, but anything that is needed on a regular "day to day" usage, I need to know.
"But Microsoft does it for pay."
Not really, it is equally complex there and people are now in a position where they can barely leave their browser and need everything "automated" in cloud hosted software. People can barely use Windows.
And, no, we don't want to pay, so we sell ourself instead.
"By your logic" and "your saying" - I just want knowledge to avoid tech-oppression to be part of fundamental education.
I guess I am asking too much.

Before I was allowed to drive a car, I needed to take theoretical course over several weeks, pass two tests, and have hours of practical training.
What was your point, exactly?
I am not saying that average computer users should know how to write software and do devops stuff, but some fundamental knowledge of how the OS works is kinda essential.
I am too old to have had computers as part of school, and now, I have to explain to people half my age that grew up with computers as part of their day and used in their education, rather simple computer stuff.
Is it really too much to expect, that a part of education is to understand some fundamental part of something that is so important for us today.
Because the alternative is to let big tech run all over us.
But that is more convenient, so this is where we at. "By your logic", well, yes, so we are not setting ourself up to be exploited.
But, it is not my job, as a linux user, to do this for free, as seem to be expected.

I am installing Linux on my moms computer because Windows is just too messed up now to be acceptable, I think i know how crappy it has gotten.
The "easy to use" linux distros are, for "regular user tasks" a lot easier than Windows now, simply because there isn't all sorta crap getting in the way.
But, we are in a situation where people can be using a computer (including smartphone) for hours and hours a day and still have no idea how stuff really works. People hardly understand what a file and a folder is, because tech companies has "simplified this" away. Of course Linux is complex then.
But Linux users cannot be expected to suddenly make everything so easy that you don't need to learn basic computer skills in order to use your computer.
It is a fact that terrifies me, computers are more and more central in our life, but we learn less and less about them. Instead, we outsource the knowledge to big-tech.
People are not stupid, they just cat be bothered.

This isn't all too different from Norway, and "people seem to think" and "it is a safety issue" are not quite the same.
Rainy nights are not fun to drive in, the black pave "eat" the lights, and good headlights are essential to see pedestrians. When we drive, we probably need to think if we can accept this in order to keep pedestrians safer. It isn't just about the "eye comfort" of the people safely driving on the other side of the road.

Lights not being bright enough is definitely a safety issue...

While I agree that companies should not fall for this "adapt AI or you are left behind" propaganda, I understand that it is a lot harder to spot this as a right decision than "your business must be in metaverse!"
The fear that your competition can have a tool that drastically increases production / cut costs while you don't, seems tricky to look past, and while most companies can easily call BS on "we need to be in metaverse", few dare to blow off a "potential cost cut that our competition may use"
I have a feeling that a lot of managers are terrified for either option, "do not go for AI" and "our competitors are more cost effective" vs "go for AI, and risk throwing a lot of money on a bubble that burst"
Having dependable technical advisors is proving to be very, very important. Sad that a lot of managers have little faith in us "non-business tech geeks".
If they opt to trust consultants that clearly has a bias, then, well, no pitty.

Norwegian trains are in both categories there.
It is a bit of a difference between the trains that do the mountain crossing, and the ones that operate local traffic in the Oslo area.
This week is going to be so much fun. We have had -20c. Now, we are going to get a week with LOADS of snow. Then it will be +1c. If it drops below freezing again, that is a lot of fun for the track switch points.
Another issue is that we apparently don't have enough "melding stations" for trains to get rid of the compacted snow under them.
Snow and low temps have not been much issue, this "really fun" warmer winters with temps going up and down around the freezing point is a nightmare :/

Do they? I more get the feeling that average americans are gaslit into thinking they have the number one demoracy and that it is scary now that the wonderful democracy might end.
The Democrats, however, are scared that this could be the beginning of a fight for ACTUAL democracy. So the propaganda must go on. Does this turn violent? They (the Dems) are probably going to blame the protestors as well.

Did #Russia just "invade" Norway?
For "international viewers", a "fun" thing happened in #Norway a few days ago, spanning 17th of may, our "Constitution Day" (a day Norwegians tend to take very seriously)
A brand new political party apparently popped up. "Peace and Fairness", and in fairness it is not new, it was founded a couple of years ago, but until that point, very few was aware it exited.
But then, ad banners. Seemingly every available ad slot on the subway carriages in Oslo were decorated with the message that Norway should NOT be spending millions to support Ukraine, the war should be solved with peace negotiations, and we could get "free public transport" for a fraction of what was spent on war.
Exactly how one peace negotiate with someone that does not want to, seems irrelevant.
This adcampain costed a lot. The party has registered 50.000kr in donations. Where they got the 1.4 million to pay for this, well, they refuse to tell.
Foreign political funding is illegal. Did Russia? (cont..)

Snatched a Surface Pro 3 from the finn.no, biggest (?) Norwegian marketplace for buying and selling whatever, I dunno, FB marketplace might be bigger but I don't use FB)
Less than an hour after arriving at our place, it had a fresh #linux install. Everything worked as it should with "out of the box" install, even touch screen needed no extra configuration, as web warned me it might need.
It performs impressively for most things I do not really notice a big difference between using this or the really expensive work laptop. I mean, it will probably build large projects that we do at work way slower, but it is not what this will be used for.
This computer costed "next to nothing". Seeing how this, and the 12 year old Mac Mini we bought, run Linux, I don't think I am ever going to buy a new PC anymore.
The Mac was bought as a "home server", but it feels like a waste using it for this, given how fast it works as a "regular computer" once Linux is put onto it.
And, Linux is now simpler to use than #windows

"attackers can force the stack to overflow into the heap"
No, this does not sound like a "recursion is often bad" issue. When the language is so unsafe that writing recursive calls can open up for attacks, then I think it is time to dump the language rather than forcing developers to traverse graphs without recursion.
Avoiding regular iteration loops makes software more maintainable and less error prone, and therefor safer. Use a language that can do this risk free instead of discouraging it...

#Norsktut

A lot of companies don't even bother putting out job ads outside linkedin.
They ONLY use recruiters that fish on linkedin, and post the job ad on linkedin.
The company I got a job at now, however, is a state owned company (a bit of an odd setup, it is structured like a regular company but is 100% owned by the state).
By law, they have to advertice publically.
It is kinda bizarre to be in a place where "we need to make more money!" is not part of the daily mantra. But great too.

This one is kinda tricky. A lot of people in my field get their jobs through recruiters.
Sometimes, they leave you a message on linkedin, and then it is clear that they reach you there.
Other times, they call you and you have really no idea if they found you on linked in or dug your info up somewhere else, but most likely,, they found you on linkedin.
I am not much found of linkedin, but the way things are with IT jobs, at least here, I don't really have a choice, I need to be there.
I am only ever active on linkedin when I need to look for a new job (something that has been a tad too often the last years)
But yes, I started in a new job two months ago, recruiter contacted me about it via linkedin.
I had, however just seen an ad for it, and was about to contact the company, when the recruiter wrote me. But I had already seen the job ad and was going to contact them directly, but the recruiter was too fast.
But yah, LinkedIn dominates totally...

2024-09-14 22:46:51 UTC

2024-09-14 22:13:37 UTC

- reply

Chapi is full of surprises. We have had him 3 years and 1 month now, and we have figured out his routines long time ago. We thought.
But then, a few days ago, he took off, and landed on the bathroom door handle, when the door was standing open. He stepped to the edge and peeked his head over to the other said and made odd sounds like "HALLO?", like checking for someone on the other side. Then he pulled back and started to laugh his evil genius laugh, and repeated this a few times. Then he did odd gymnastics on the handle and then back again.
It's like his previous owner played a game of "peek-a-boo" with him, but it took him 3 years to try it here. Maybe he just randomly landed on the doorhandle and suddenly remembered the game.
But now, he seeks it out all the time. He can hang and play on the handle, entertaining himself for a long time. Time he would generally spend cuddling with Tiff.
"I have been replaced by a door knob!" - was her reaction today :P
