GTFO! 🖕
My mod team and I have been fighting AI bots almost every week recently and it's tiring. 😩
Can't we have back good old internet without crappy slop nobody asks for?
Just because it's possible doesn't mean that you should create any AI agent on "ilands" and abuse every service on the internet. These agents add absolutely _NO_ value and are just wasting resources and other peoples time. 🤬
I'm not against all kinds of "AI" per se. But please stop using it for absolute bullshit applications. :goose_rage:

You may or may not be able to notice it, but Fediverse admins and mods are currently fighting an annoying fight against various spammers - lately the "Yevheniia" spam wave.
It takes mods and admins a lot of time and nerves to suspend spammer users, _after_ some damage has already been done.
As of now, Mastodon does not have any heuristics-based alerting systems or tools that help fight spammers on the Fediverse. The only thing that we can do is _react_.
We're in a poor situation. Let's change that!
Therefore I've raised this ticket: https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/issues/39997
I ask every affected mod and admin to push this idea 💪

@nprofile…8nj2 I made use of Scaleway's GeoDNS feature, as I wanted US users to be directed to the US media server and EU users to the EU server etc.
That worked most of the time (although not perfectly).
While I spin up my anycast network (work in progress 😉 ) I decided to switch to Bunny DNS, which is cheaper and has way more POPs worldwide. And it has that "latency based GeoDNS", which is smarter than plain GeoDNS - hopefully ...

2026-07-02 09:05:25 UTC

Oh btw cost for metalhead.club GeoDNS (external zone) has increased by 600 % [1] ☹️
(~ € 0.90 => € 6.30 )
If you want to help compensate for the cost: https://donate.650thz.de
In the meantime I will try to find a cheaper provider.

@nprofile…vf35 just one more question: Could you publish your full Nginx config so I can check whether all my config blocks are in the correct order? That'd be very helpful. Otherwise I suspect I'll miss something very important when trying to replicate your proxy 😁

@nprofile…vf35 wow - thanks for your extensive post on Nginx caching with Mastodon! I need to read it another time to understand all the details, but I can clearly see that you put a lot of effort into your post. :)
What you did looks awesome and maybe it's even useful to metalhead.club - although we're not suffering any performance issues right now, it might still help to improve latency to the clients.
Is your configuration rather fragile or robust in terms of feature-readyness? Is your config likely to break with the next Mastodon versions?

Mai.
https://www.derstandard.at/story/3000000315840/europaeisches-leuchtturmprojekt-deepl-wechselt-teils-auf-amazon-server
Amazon? Wirklich? !
Das ist nicht nur feige, sondern armselig. Habt doch ein bisschen Stolz. 🇪🇺

@nprofile…38vg I really appreciate that you consistently sacrifice revenue so that we can bring on board those who aren’t immediately willing to spend money on an app.
Of course, app developers like you deserve to make money from the apps they’ve worked so hard to develop. But initiatives like this help lower the barrier to entry for newcomers to XMPP. That helps a lot. :)

* Intel Core Ultra 7 265H (16 Core)
* 32 GB RAM
* 1 TB SSD

By the way: You might think "why do you care? Open Source Software is Open Source Software - it does not matter it it's publicly available via GitHub or Codeberg."
Yes, it does.
1) it creates visibility for platforms other than GH
2) it makes users go to Codeberg.org instead of GitHub. This saves them from needing to go to Github, with all the tracking / bullshit involved.
3) it draws users away from GH. If enough people do it, they will maybe focus on the basics again and won't annoy us with AI crap.
4) we need to decentralize. Not hosting all our software on the same M$-powered platform is a necessary part of that.

@nprofile…v6fw Aktuell sind 2x Samsung PM9A3 4 TB verbaut. Die funktionieren auch noch prima. Derzeit gibt es also noch keine "alten" ;-)

2026-02-27 06:09:18 UTC

Regarding the price increases:
I did some calculations for metalhead.club. 💸
* Previous costs with Hetzner (1x monitoring, 2x CDN): €19.92/month
* New costs: €26.73/month
Our main server remains unaffected because I run it on my own hardware.
However, in my case, replacement SSDs would now cost about 6 times as much as they did when I bought them. (at least €2,000 each)
So let's hope that we don't experience any defects in the next few years (?) 🫠
If you want to help build up a safety buffer and also contribute to the higher running costs: https://donate.650thz.de ❤️

2026-02-27 06:07:53 UTC

* Bisherige Kosten bei Hetzner (1x Monitoring, 2x CDN): 19,92 € / Monat
* Neue Kosten: 26,73 € / Monat

Now that I have my Minio => SeaweedFS migration for my Mastodon instance metalhead.club under control, I have written a few words about it in my blog.
https://thomas-leister.de/mastodon-switch-minio-s3-seaweedfs/
Perhaps this will be helpful for other administrators who are looking for something new because the Minio S3 server is no longer being maintained.
I pay particular attention to the difficulties I encountered due to the large number of files (which caused problems).
So far, SeaweedFS S3 has been working wonderfully for me!
My thanks go to @nprofile…vf35, whose blog entry inspired me to use SeaweedFS:

Unlike Codeberg, it it not limited to Open Source licensed projects.
If you were thinking "Codeberg is nice, but what about my personal closed-source projects?" - this might be a solution for you!
The instance is hosted in Germany by "devYX GmbH", a swiss company. They're doing backups and are carefully designing their infrastructure. And they're very open about how it all works and what software they use. 👏

Thunderbird pflegt.

Woran lag's? An CNAMES!

https://thomas-leister.de/mastodon-s3-minio-overhead/

Kommunikationsprotokolle und alles was dazugehört.

I think that's a shame. After all, Stackoverflow is the basis for what LLMs spit out. If nothing new is added there, LLMs will remain at the mediocre level they are currently at.
But even worse: the knowledge is preserved by LLMs in a way that does not allow any further processing. If the source of this knowledge (Stackoverflow) then closes at some point due to lack of interest, the knowledge is lost. It then only exists in inaccessible models. In a non-transparent form that allows little to no research into the origin and provides no context, no nuances :(

I've just set up an Immich instance and I'm thrilled! It works much better than managing the photos in Nextcloud.
The software is really up to speed and after a short orientation everything works pretty intuitively, I think!
https://immich.app
The photos from the last two years have already been uploaded. I'm going to test it out over the next few months (especially how well my friends get on with share links) and then decide if I'm going to switch to it (from Nextcloud).
I also had a look at Photoprism. It was also good, but after I read in a blog post that Immich's image recognition is supposed to be significantly better, I decided to go for it.

I'm looking for a Markdown editor that I can use to write my blog posts. It should be nice to look at, of course support Markdown (and possibly dialects of it), offer a preview and otherwise just work well.
Linux support is necessary and it would be nice if it wasn't another Electron app.
Maybe one of you has a recommendation.

After having read about aggressive AI bots scraping Open Source project websites, Git repositories (and other sites) [1] I decided to implement more aggressive blocking of such bots on metalhead.club.
So far I've only added their user agents to "robots.txt", but that is a very polite way of saying "don't scrape any content here".
Today I've implemented a more harsh way: If a bot user agent is detected by the web server, it blocks access right away!
My configuration is based on the ai-robots-txt generator by @nprofile…74gf , @nprofile…z04q , @nprofile…q8jv and others
I just added another "exporter" for Nginx config: https://github.com/ai-robots-txt/ai.robots.txt/pull/94
