Due to Linus T stabbing the community values in the back, I started with a FreeBSD server. Now I urgently need @nprofile…u76z ' s ZFS book, because it turns out that ZFS is quite a different beast from what I had on Linux so far.
I feel like a guy who bred a couple of eggs in the cellar in the hope of getting some nice turkeys for Halloween. But what's in the cellar now, fills it almost completely, has many heads and tails, and scales and seems very angry.
Need this book.
BTW, I am absolutely astonished again how prescient this @nprofile…u76z is: He started with this book months before I even thought about installing FreeBSD.

This PHP apocalypse? I wish I were a better person and could say honestly that I commiserate.
But: For thirty years real software engineers have been insisting that the whole thing smells and one should touch it only with a fire pole (or a class 1 HazMat suite).
But the internet at large was like "Nah, man, you are too set in your ways, we have to go with the times. Also YOLO".
Now he inevitable has happened, due to a confluence of bad practices and asshole grifter who are hellbent to destroy the internet as we know it (I intentionally don't say "love it": The honeymoon is long over there, I'd guess at least 25 years ...).
But somehow I cannot find a single tear in me. They had it coming. I am sorry. As I said, I'd like to be better person, but, seemingly, can't.
Yes, yes, I know we'll all be poorer because of it --- after all an astonishing number of things we love are based on PHP. But still. It's like a bad divorce: You know it is necessary, you don't enjoy it and are glad when it's finally over.

Strange, how (even in FOSS) the AI discussion always pivots to technical topics (or I should rather say to technical speculations about the future), instead that it's just discussed as a part of the code of conduct: Don't use inhuman (in more than one sense), IP-stealing tech.
The FOSS community is well known to take a moral stance every now and then, so why not apply this to AI? Because it's so overwhelmingly useful?
But guess what: This will definitely make us fall back behind the industrial competition, since they can buy much more usefulness in form of tokens.
If we recognize AI work as useful or equivalent to the work of FOSS activists we are already fucked, because we can always be beaten in this game by the guys with the deeper pockets..

The US always was a shit hole country for this kind of attitude, but it's now becoming more apparent. The majority of citizens seems to be Ok with this. A girl friend of mine attributed this (decades ago) to the founding history: The US was settled by fundamentalist christian groups with a Calvinist streak: So it's your own fault if you don't have a place to sleep, practically a moral failure.

Regarding "it crashes" it seems the driver has a bug in its suspend method. I am not sure why the driver is not proper initialized after this on reboot.[1]
You had a complete power-off before rebooting?
I'd like to defend BSD here: Yes, it's more picky about hardware that works. But: It's totally the fault of hardware manufacturers who have no common hardware/software interface and insists throwing new hardware (chips) on the market as if there is no tomorrow. With some laptop brands, the thing is even called the same but contains wildly different chipsets a year later.
That's a race only a big community can win. And even Linux is struggling. I almost bought a new laptop that, it turned out some weeks later, would not have been working with Linux.
[1] One theory: BSD might automatically blacklist drivers that crashed in certain situations. But this is just speculation. I haven't run a BSD for a loooong time. I need to get back to it. Linux has become such a drag, and before debugging HW support problems with systemd interfering, I'd rather debug them with BSD.

I perhaps translated not quite right from my native language. What I meant to say:
The male self image is centered around "what I am able to do". My hypothesis: This (while it has largely become a goal in itself) might have its root in the "traditional" role as breadwinner for the family. Their worth for their family ("what I can give") stems from what they are able to do / achieve.
That's all no justification. Especially not for lying to yourself about your abilities.
And we (as a society, but especially mal subculture) should have abandoned this way of thinking ("breadwinner") long ago, not only because of #patriarchy.
But I am looking for systemic root causes beyond ---let me employ a bit a of hyperbole (my apologies for this already) --- beyond "they're male, so mentally impaired, no other explanation needed".
Which seems where a substantial fraction of discussions on these type of problems seem to end up on social media.
As an accurate statement of symptoms it's enough, I agree. For me though, then pretty soon comes the question of the root causes.
It make a difference, if we think the current state of affairs is (a) biologically unavoidable, (b) a male sub-cultural problem (c) a larger system problem that leaves this problem in male subculture, or (d) something else.

Hahaha.
They should try once in a realistic flight simulator to only land a small, single engine propeller plane.
It's an eye-opener.
What I learn from this (and what is the fundamental underlying problem) that a lot of people (likely most of them male) believe they can do a lot of things they have zero experience with.
Maybe it's the Dunning-Kruger effect hard at work.
Plus, also maybe, the peculiar aspect of male socialization by which you ground your self esteem and perceived value for others on what you can do.
Which now surprisingly lead me to the question: Perhaps this particular facet is actually an effect of an utilitarian capitalist system which couples value with skills and performance.

As far as I am concerned, we (everybody outside of the US) should adjust our business plans accordingly and assume that we will have more or less 50% tariff (he'll stack them) when dealing with the US anyway.
Negotiations will only bring temporary relief, but nobody should continue planning as if that were the baseline state.

Maybe they just mean they want to go back to 2016 or 2022 when it seemed you were at least better than at colonial times and on the right way to improvement.
I am saying this, because I suspect, taking away this point of reference will make any evil by the current regime just a featureless event in a soup of featureless events: Evil back to 1500-and-something, and evil the same today with no relief in between.
I suspect with such a baseline there will be no base for resistance: Which draws its power always from "there were better times which proves it's possible to have different circumstances" and the idea/dream that things can become better. Resistance draws it's motivation from the idea of change, that there is (or can be) progress over time. For that some (not theoretical) point of reference is likely necessary.

- Passenger get a pill for sedation 20 minutes before departure.
- Get sealed into a 40 x 40 y 200 cm coffins.
- Everybody who needs a larger coffin needs to pay surcharge.
- Passenger getting restless, get knocked out by means of sleeping gas dose fed into the coffin from a small gas cylinder every flight attendant has on their belt.
- You can buy extra oxygen or cooling from the on-board oxygen bar (virtual) at the really cheap price of $5 per liter.
- Business class gets more oxygen and larger coffins.

IMHO it fits the Silicon Valley / tech bro mind set where the saying is "execution is 90%". AI executes very well, but has no idea what it paints.
Fixed: Typo (apostrophe in fit's)

What do you mean ...? Did you know that as soon as the phone stops charging /drawing power, the power bank will draw power from the phone?
Or did you (maybe) just not get what the OP wrote?
(Or did I not get what the OP wrote?)

TIL RMS on extending #emacs #lisp
"We're willing to extend it some now, but we don't want to extend it to the level of common Lisp. I implemented Common Lisp once on the Lisp machine, and I'm not all that happy with it. One thing I don't like terribly much is keyword arguments [8]. They don't seem quite Lispy to me; I'll do it sometimes but I minimize the times when I do that."
From: https://www.gnu.org/gnu/rms-lisp.html
Thanks, Richard, for keeping us stuck in the middle ages.
Fixed: typo.

Unfortunately I clearly remember the time when there weren't even processor powerful enough to run you. Must be Alzheimer getting at me.
Or, bold thought, you are having a generational problem with the nice society you built for yourself here.
(Older people are also diffcult to reeducate and by definition are survivors. Your problem might even run deeper than was apparent at first glance.)

In the 30s + 40s we had something like this in Germany. It was called "Blockwart" (translated perhaps "block warden").

Strange, though, that it's not on the web site. And I suppose one can send April fools by mail, there is not RFC against it ;-).
We will see. If this is an April's fool, it's certainly bad taste doing this to their writers. I get from you link that people get agitated.

Any idea what happens here? (1) is there a better way to compare path-names? (2) Shouldn't EQUAL structurally compare everything, even path-names?

Not to defend the Tangerine One, but there is an EO 14187 => https://www.presidency.ucsb.edu/documents/executive-order-14187-protecting-children-from-chemical-and-surgical-mutilation
So it seems not unlikely that this is just counting and the EOs don't start at 0 for every prez.

> Much depends on how one defines and understands what hope is, it seems to me.
As I said: The hope that everything will blow over, that it doesn't take collectively rising up, that the few who seriously put the lives they have on the line, that all this will be enough. That one can avoid the all-out conflict with Trump's goons or with the neighbors who voted for him.
This is what keeps people from rising up: Their desire to avoid conflict, to get along with their neighbors, their bosses, the system. The desire for a bit of piece.
And unfortunately it hands an advantage to the goons, who don't mind the conflict, the violence, physically or psychologically.
(Not by accident this is the same mechanism which so often prevents beaten spouses with their partners)

And soon you'll all learn the answer to the question a lot of people had: Why nobody took Hitler out of circulation before he fully consolidated control.
Not that I don't feel with all who now don't burn their lives in possibly futile acts of resistance. Hope (that it will blow over or that somebody else will do the necessary thing) is sometimes poisonous.

On the other side, I am just thinking about "never attribute to malice what could be attributed to stupidity".
I have, over time, read most of the seminal books of what makes knowledge workers tick (De Marco, Daniel Pink, etc) and unobtrusively probed management types for whether they read it (with some subversive intentions, admitted). But it turns out, nobody (!) has and most don't have a theory of management beyond "it's just common sense".
