Hot compost Day 6. Turned the hot compost for a second time into a taller, narrower pile. It was just over 40°C/104F when I left it.
It will be left to continue to heat up and then to gradually cool down. When it drops below 27°C/80F the worms will move in and start to do their magic.
This pile will be weed free potting compost for use next spring.#Compost #Composting #SolarPunkSunday

It’s beyond worrying when people decide they are better able to defend themselves in closing statements than their own defence barristers following restrictions placed on their legal representatives by the court.
How or why it is legal to be tried by jury for one crime which may allow the judge to pass sentence for a more serious crime with a longer sentence.
Removing trial by jury is not justice.

@nprofile…9ney I’ve never had mould be an issue in making any of these amendments. I’ve not made the fish amino acid but I’ve made batches of the other four many times without a problem with mould or in storage. I make new batches of each every growing year.
I generally use the LAB and the non vinegar versions (the initial extract of each batch) of the FPJ up every growing year. The vinegar extracts obviously can be (and are) stored for much longer.

Isolation and hand-pollination of cucurbit flowers
Cucumber, marrow and squash plants usually have separate male and female flowers, easily distinguished because each female flower has a tiny immature fruit behind it, whereas male flowers sit on straight stalks. 1/5

This small freshwater pond harbours three species of plants in decline: creeping marshwort, fen violet and greater water-parsnip.
Ten species of dragonfly have been sighted in this habitat since 2021. Dragonflies thrive in unpolluted waters and have a long underwater larval stage (8 weeks to 5 years) before emerging as adults.
Freshwater ponds need nurturing and protecting from the pollution around us.
By doing so they help to nurture us too. #Biodiversity #WeAreNature #SolarPunkSunday

@nprofile…7ehw @nprofile…az0m Yes, the former. Here a pushchair, stroller, pram or buggy are all interchangeable terms for equipment to move small children about in.
A wheelchair is for use by anyone with mobility issues.
Here in the UK toys are mostly chucked out of prams by children.
In America it seems it’s mostly done by their richest adults.

I can see its usefulness for insulating the soil life and encouraging the wildlife your way.

@nprofile…9ney Yes, one window found and three more to source from wherever.
I’d like a window on every side. Two looking over the plot, one on the hedge line and the other at the plot behind which is a buffer zone between nature reserve and allotments.
Things are green but with the illusion of growth. This time last week it was all white.

@nprofile…gzlk I wouldn’t sow anything specifically to fill that gap between early April when the ground starts to warm up to the end of May when our last frost date has passed.
Of the things I could sow or transplant in early spring the list is long but off the top of my head I would sow: broad beans, field beans, beetroot, radish, spring onions, lettuces, rocket, mustard, lovage, parsley, carrot, phacelia, vetch, calendula, borage, marigolds, alyssum, birdsfoot trefoil, white clover etc.

@nprofile…gzlk I cant advise what would work for your climate. Your temperatures go so much lower than ours.
Rocket is frost hardy here and some culinary mustards are too. The white mustard I use as green manure is knocked back and killed by hard frosts. Ladybirds like to overwinter in their hollow stalks so they stay until spring before I clear the beds for the early spring crops.

As well as the home made compost I also have a bin of Korean Natural Farming IMO4 inside the shed, a worm bin at home in the garage and a bokashi bin to take any unwanted cooked food waste. And there’s a pile of leaf litter turning slowly into leaf mould.
Composting can happen in many guises. I wish more people embraced it in their own lives. We live in an exceptionally wasteful world fast losing our natural biodiversity. #Compost #Composting #NoDig #SoilHealth #Gardening #Allotment #Solarpunk

@nprofile…gzlk I do plan on using soil blocks again next year. I will have a lot less space for storing plants next spring so I will have to adjust to doing more direct sowing and also sowing things later.
Although I fear whether last frosts will actually be something we even have to contemplate the way things climate wise are heading.
Good to hear the composting tips you’ve picked up and the soil blocks have done well for you.

This is my composting set up over winter. We are fortunate our winters are mild. The piles are unlikely to freeze.
The two palleted compost bays have been freshly turned.
Four compost Daleks contain maturing compost.
Another compost dalek recieves the weekly veg peelings and garden weeds with sawdust added over the top.
After taking the photos all the compost was covered or lids put back on to keep the rain off. #Compost #Composting #NoDig #Mulch #Gardening #Allotment #Solarpunk

@nprofile…gzlk The aim is to not need to use any of the tapped water supply on site. It’s achievable in our climate provided it rains often enough.
I’ll have 3000 litres stored which, used sparingly, would see the plot through a dry spring or summer (but not both).

The home raised bed is sown with autumn/winter crops. (See AltText for the list of veg).
This bed will give us a diverse harvest of fresh leafy greens throughout late autumn, winter and into spring.
We’re lucky to have temperate winters in the UK but few growers make use of our climate. We harvest something virtually all year round.
Elsewhere we’ll grow autumn sown broad beans, field beans, onions, garlic, potatoes, autumn carrots, horseradish. Lots.
