Another follow-up after several more DMs, and I really need to share this observation:
There are a bunch of folks (at least in my own network) who are using LLMs every day, and are seeing solid success addressing very specific personal obstacles. Things that you and I might take for granted, but that others need a hand with.
They’re having fantastic success with this, but you’re not hearing about it. Why? Because they don’t want to get raked over the coals for using LLMs.

LLM ubiquity is ushering us into a sort of warped inverse renaissance, to the detriment of those of us who still value real words written by real people.

Starting now and through at least the end of November, I’m setting aside 25% of omg.lol’s net proceeds to help any members who are unable to buy food due to the loss of SNAP funds. I’ll donate whatever isn’t needed to the Dare to Care food bank here in Louisville, KY.
Communities like ours can help each other out in tough times, and this is one simple way to do that.
If you rely on SNAP funds and need a hand, you can email help@omg.lol.

Mastodon *is* microblogging. You publish posts, and people can subscribe to your RSS feed. Just like a blog.
If you subscribe to my feed (http://social.lol/@adam.rss), you’d never even know that my posts came from Mastodon. They could be from Bear or Pika or Movable Type.
The best part? All of the “social” parts of Mastodon are excluded from the feed. No favorites, boosts, or replies. Just posts!
Maybe I’ll just call this my blog from now on.

Yesterday, in the face of active turmoil surrounding the Bluesky CEO’s disgusting treatment of trans people on her platform, Manton Reece (owner of Micro.blog) posted a message praising that very CEO and her “strong principles and vision.”
Even after multiple people pointed out how terrible and insensitive of a take that was, and even after the day passed, his post remains exactly as he wrote it. No retraction, no clarification.
He’s telling you exactly what he means.

“Discovery feeds” are inevitably problematic. There is always bias in curation, and vote-based systems are always manipulated.
Part of why I love Mastodon is that “discovery” is just a natural part of how things work here. Instances have their own public feeds, where you can easily follow people and interests (hashtags) to build out your own timeline. No curation or bias. Just a stream of activity for your own personal discovery, on your own terms.

2025-06-20 04:29:13 UTC

I won’t link to the post, because someone will (fairly and understandably) point out that I’m “putting someone on blast”. But earlier today someone said (about me): “I just wish more people would agree to disagree.”
I’ll agree to disagree on the best flavor of ice cream. I’ll agree to disagree on which Star Wars movie is the best. But when it comes to anything that infringes on a person’s actual humanity? No, I’m not going to just “oh, well!” that. I’m going to disagree very strongly and very loudly.
I’m sick and tired of people who want to treat a disagreement over how *actual transphobia* was handled as if it’s on equal footing as a disagreement over text editors or operating systems. I’m tired of the tut-tutting and pearl clutching from people who don’t understand or don’t care about the very real issues that others face. I’m tired of the ignorance, the let’s-all-just-get-along, and the intense disrespect that comes from those who put their own desire for quiet and comfort over others who actually want to deal with real problems that others face in our shared communities.
This same person also said (again, about me): “I'm not sure half the time that man is on the same planet as anyone else.”
Gee, thanks. I’m on this planet, right here. The one with serious issues. I’m on the planet where choosing to talk about those issues, to address them, to raise awareness, is seen as a step toward positive change. I’m on the planet where a tough conversation does more to move the needle than a monthly photo blogging challenge.
You don’t have to like any of this. And you don’t have to *do* any of this. But to choose to not understand it? That’s just a special sort of highly privileged ignorance. And it doesn’t look good on anyone, anywhere.
You can agree to disagree with that if you want. Meanwhile, I’m going to be supporting people who aren’t lucky enough to be in a position to simply disagree with things like the removal of their basic human rights. Right here on this very planet.

inb4 the inevitable bad faith “virtue signaling” accusations. No, it’s not virtue signaling when you recognize someone else’s celebration, nor is it when you make a joke pointing out that some milquetoast genteel guy in Austin would rather support the diversity of his community through very brave discussions about Apple and AI than actually deign to recognize any oppressed group’s plight.
And to the two folks out there who spent today talking about me while also blocking me so I can’t respond to any of it, this isn’t “vitriol”. It’s facts. Deal with it.

2025-06-19 20:12:17 UTC

If the straight white guy who runs your social IndieWeb platform hasn’t yet mentioned Juneteenth today or Pride Month this month, go ahead and ask them why not. They always love that! 😄

2025-06-19 07:26:58 UTC

407 years ago, the first slaves arrived in Virginia. They were from Angola.
162 years ago, Lincoln declared that all enslsved people in Confederate territories were free.
160 years ago (to the day!), on #Juneteenth, the last enslaved people in the USA were freed.
61 years ago, racial discrimination and segregation were outlawed by the Civil Rights Act.
60 years ago, black Americans finally secured comprehensive electoral protections through the Voting Rights Act.
But:
- 12 years ago, the Supreme Court ruled that states no longer require federal approval for new voting policies. Since then, more than 100 voter suppression laws have been passed across states with histories of discriminatory practices.
- For every dollar earned by a white person in the USA, a black person earns 87 cents.
- White Americans hold 84% of the country’s wealth, while black people hold just 3%.
- Institutional racism remains a serious problem, with black people facing disparities in education, housing, employment, healthcare, and in the criminal justice system.
- Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, three good things that help *everyone*, are under constant attack.
Today is Juneteenth, and it’s a day to celebrate. But I hope all of my white friends can take a moment to consider that however far we think we’ve come with civil rights in this country, it hasn’t been far enough. Every day we see more examples of people in power actively working to undermine fairness and decency while driving increasingly larger wedges between ethnic groups. We have to be better than this. We must refuse to accept this. There is so much work to be done, by all of us.

social.lol absolutely is a “tribal” social network.
In this tribe, we believe:
- Pronouns are just as important as a name.
- Independent creators are far more interesting than big tech.
- Human creativity will always outclass an algorithm.
- Diversity is a strength.
- Equity is a right.
When someone on the outside looks in and frowns at the “tribal” nature of any of that, I can’t help but wonder how *their* preferred tribe looks.

2025-06-17 15:39:13 UTC

Observation: the Fediverse was built in direct opposition to big tech and the billionaires who fund and abuse it.
So maybe when all of your federated posts lick the boots of those billionaires, you’re going to get a certain kind of response.
People aren’t “careless”, and pointing out how your takes aren’t at all consistent with your self-proclaimed IndieWeb values isn’t an “attack”. Grow up.

📝 New on the omg.lol blog: We have to talk about AI “art” - https://omglol.news/2025/04/02/we-have-to-talk-about-ai-art
Or at least I want to talk about it, especially where our community is concerned. A lot of folks are getting tired of seeing it. I worry that we’re only going to see more of it, or worse, that it won’t be long before we can’t even identify it. It’s harmful and annoying, but also people really seem to enjoy it, and I don’t know if that’s because they’re unaware of the harm or because they’re just not concerned.

Senator Booker breaking Strom Thurmond’s record for the longest senate floor speech is gonna be awesome, not as an impressive feat of stamina or political determination, but because he’s a black man taking the record from a white racist.
Thurmond’s record was set in 1957, and his speech was an argument against civil rights. His position was that civil rights shouldn’t be federally guaranteed, but left to the states. (Sound familiar?)
This will be good history painting over awful history.

The very first CSS for Beginners class is today, in just about five hours from now. So of course I only just started on the class materials. 😅
(Hopefully that gives you an idea of how chill this class is going to be.)
If you’ve been putting off learning about CSS, this might be a great way to jump in! Or it might be awful, I don’t know, I’ve never done this before. In any case, you’re welcome to join!

If you’re at that part of your web developer journey where you know enough HTML to be dangerous but haven’t really learned CSS because you tried once and it made you nauseous, then I’ve got a treat for you. This Friday, December 13 at 1 PM PST / 4 PM EDT / 9 PM UTC, I’m going to teach a live, hour-long class that will cover the basics of CSS.
More info here: https://neatnik.net/css-for-beginners/
It should be pretty chill, and hopefully fun, too. The entire internet is invited. Pass it on!

This feels like it’s ripped straight from a Calvin & Hobbes comic where the dad is just making stuff up to avoid admitting that he just doesn’t know.

@nprofile…ckfv This particular setup gives you full control over the methods being used — so it’s definitely an “AND” in this case. I do need to make that more clear, though!

@nprofile…ckfv yikes! Will dig into that shortly. In the interim, you should be able to hit https://id.neatnik.net/recovery to at least get in that way. Sorry for the bumps here!

@nprofile…ddq2 totally agree, the AT protocol is technically superior. But my concern is about the blind flocking to a centralized, VC-backed entity, not about protocols.

2024-11-17 03:02:52 UTC

- reply

@nprofile…avnw yeah, the protocol is nice, and there are aspects that I hope ActivityPub can learn from and eventually incorporate (maybe?). I’m just in a state of disappointed disbelief that so many people in the indieweb space are eagerly getting behind another corporate social thing again. The protocol may be open, PDSes may be a thing, but bsky.social is a critical component of the service (since that’s where 18M people are now). Hard not to see it as centralized.

2024-11-17 02:40:31 UTC

The excitement over Bluesky is really interesting to watch, but it makes me a little sad. It’s like we’ve learned *nothing* after being repeatedly burned by VC-funded social media over the years. We’ve all seen this movie before and we know exactly how it ends. :prami_upset:

@nprofile…q5w4 Mastodon continues to feel like home for me, but I think this last exodus from Twitter has a lot of people interested in going to where the masses are heading. I just wish it wasn’t to a place funded by big investors… it’s the total opposite of the indie web ethos. :prami_upset:

A couple of people have contacted me about the printable one-page calendar that I have on https://neatnik.net/calendar, asking about a 2025 version. It’ll automatically switch over to 2025 on January 1, but you can print a 2025 version at any time by visiting https://neatnik.net/calendar/?year=2025. Enjoy!

@npub16kf…f4dm Whoops! Found and fixed that particular glitch. (Can you tell I’m still testing this? 😅)
If you give it another go, you should get an email this time. Also, once you’re signed in, you should be able to visit https://id.neatnik.net to manage your Neatnik ID, including adding other authentication methods. Don’t hesitate to let me know if you stumble across any other issues!

@npub16kf…f4dm Sorry about that! I’ve been working on the new authentication system (Neatnik ID) and totally forgot that I had left it in a test mode. 😅
Feel free to give it a try now, and let me know if you run into any trouble with it. (This will also soon be used for omg.lol, along with other stuff!)

They’re running a Black Friday sale (50% off!), so if you know someone else who could use a subscription as well, that’s on me too. ❤️

“Oh, Adam, you just don’t understand. They didn’t vote for him because they want a racist, fascist, misogynistic dictator; they voted for him because they just want prices to go down.”
It’s astonishing that people can make this kind of appeal, opting to gloss right over the racism, fascism, and misogyny. It’s astonishing that they expect me to sympathize with the view that racism, fascism, and misogyny are a worthwhile tradeoff for personal economic relief.
Some people aren’t hooked up right.
