i dont think cast iron can withstand the required forces

yea its been common practice to have engine and gearbox in a single casing since like the 50s i have no idea where id get a pre-unit construction gearbox (those just connect to the gearbox via a chaindrive)

2025-11-25 20:25:08 UTC

- reply

i dont even know how id do that. liike where the fuck would i get a gearbox that could remotely be made to fit a rotary

diesel motorcycles are kind of a meme though
i say fully wanting to make a rotary motorcycle

which is why i know all this

i like diesels i think diesel is an awesome fuel

2025-11-25 20:19:14 UTC

throwback to a man in his 40s telling me diesels dont have sparkplugs (that is a technicality. they have glow plugs and they are required to cold start the engine. yes they can be turned off once the engine has warmed up because from then on diesel can combust from residual heat and compression alone but they are still required parts of the engine)

like is there any isolation between them?

2025-11-23 11:06:01 UTC

- reply

yea i was very far off i just also still dont know what they do aside from being collections of process groups

https://skarnet.org/software/s6/s6-setsid.html this is all i have
its a reimplementation of a daemontools thing so it might not be that

thats what i THINK it is. i dont get it yet

idk its like SID stuff? maybe its a kernel feature im not knowledgable about? to make services completely unaware of all other user processes including eachother? i think there was something like that (at least in systemd). itd be nice if s6 has an equivalent cause linux is a bit behind openbsd on isolating services from the rest of the system. pledge and unveil are such elegant fucking solutions i love them

2025-11-23 10:36:39 UTC

- reply

ivee been reading so many s6 docs
i actually understand it now! im gonna use so much of this! im gonna use setuidgid to privilege separate the fuck out of my services. i love service users i love service users. theres also sessions apparently which i have absolutely no idea about

2025-11-23 10:31:46 UTC

- reply

id say that makes sense but its actually utterly nonsensical and unjustifiable behaviour and im 100% ripping out systemd in favor of s6

2025-11-23 03:38:11 UTC

- reply

would be more knowledgable on this than me i think

2025-11-23 03:37:23 UTC

- reply

yea. its probably the truest form of a parallel internet
i think yggdrasil and other projects function similarly and i believe there are some that are even peered with dn42 again

2025-11-23 03:35:54 UTC

- reply

that is actually how it works for dn42. you have to find someone else in dn42 to peer with them and gain entry. thats part of why im interested in it. theres no top-down hirarchy that prioritizes (or even necessarily tolerates) corpos

2025-11-23 03:31:36 UTC

- reply

we need to create a parallel internet with a low barrier for entry so people will actually use it but thats also unappealing to corpos and other evildoers

i fucking LOATHE this modern internet hellscape where literally everything is low effort malware

2025-11-23 03:24:13 UTC

honestly another part of why i didnt want to upstream my ports was just that chimera uses github and github's process is particularly moronic
like i could literally just email them git diffs and that would suffice to merge my shit github complicates the fuck out of it literally just to engage in data collection and force you into their ecosystem and i dont want to be there

2025-11-23 03:18:57 UTC

- reply

i didnt really want to upstream any of them either but that was more so because of anxiety. i dont like being scrutinized by strangers and deemed that my contribution was sub-standard. it hurts

2025-11-23 03:17:13 UTC

- reply

genuinely made me loathe writing packages

2025-11-23 03:15:37 UTC

- reply

hows building apkbuilds. is it a very automated process or do u essentially just write a script for the entire build process start to end? if its a very automated process id like to know how pedantic it is because chimera's cports literally has a defined "correct" order for its variables and its so fucking obnoxious and i kinda hate it

2025-11-23 03:02:49 UTC

how is buliding your local repo
is it good? like idk the only time i tried using alpine i ended up in a really unpleasant and tedious installer

2025-11-23 03:00:00 UTC

- reply

but... but source based distro... the funny one....

2025-11-23 02:52:25 UTC

learning the init cli is simple. s6-rc is similar enough to openbsd rc that it should be fine
the hard part is installing all of its very modular components correctly which may or may not require grabbing somebody elses packages and updating them and writing all the required services (im unfamiliar with execline which is kind of a requirement here)
theres a lot more going on than just learning the interface. theres a reason i was initially intending to install exherbo vanilla and then work on my own distro that uses s6 by default (and busybox including mdev, and musl probably, but still gcc. basically id make source-based alpine linux but with s6 instead of openrc because i dont like openrc's cli)

2025-11-23 02:46:00 UTC

- reply

like what
its a systemd distro. they dont have the manpower to maintain more options so nothing else is documented
i can go back into the installer and try to fiddle with the fstab and whatever in hopes of getting systemd to behave and ill probably end up trying that but i just... dont want to deal with it if im honest. even if the alternatives ultimately an even larger undertaking

2025-11-23 02:38:15 UTC

- reply

i have essentially zero hope that ill be able to do it in a reasonable amount of time if at all because ripping out and replacing your init (and one im super unfamiliar with at that) is a process i have absolutely no experience in, on a distro i have not much experience with, at a desk i dont really find comfortable while its ice fucking cold outside making it too cold for me to get anything done most of the time
like unironically this is killing my "burying myself under my blanket" reflex because im so sick of being stuck in bed. when its warm i lie on top of my blanket now to have a clearer distinction between chilling and huddling up for warmth (it helps mentally. its freeing)

gang do i go back into the chroot and already install s6, s6-init and s6-rc? just kinda wing it and chip away at this problem over time?

2025-11-23 02:25:40 UTC

exherbo still doesnt boot bc systemd pooped itself
"failed to preset unit /etc/xyz: does not exist" and "failed to preset unit /etc/xyz: read only filesystem" all over the place. i dont want to fix this i want to kill it

ive finally figured out another thing that puts me off on pokemon
the basic common cards are... just kind of ugly. like tell me this psyduck card wouldnt be infinitely cooler if the card werent fucking blue
idk in yu gi oh the basic card palette is much less loud and more neutral and as a result the art actually gets to shine

totally agreed actually, we desperately need an open online banking api i want to kill my bank because they dont even have web banking, only 2 proprietary mobile apps (one for auth the other for actual information) that dont fucking work correctly
