I shared a link from NPR Tiny Desk but there was no image preview or video embed. After investigating this I learned that when you do that, each instance picks up the link and individually retrieves the link preview nearly simultaneously. For gargantuan sites like YT or Reddit, this is a trivial amount of traffic and not a problem, but for smaller sites like NPR this results in a sort of botnet DDOS attack on the site's servers. [More here.](https://box464.com/posts/mastodon-preview-cards/) [Another example here](https://aseachange.com/@elena/statuses/01JXZ40BX8MT0YC3F81BP0H1D3) . For that reason, NPR has blocked Fediverse servers like Mastodon.
I have experienced this on my personal server as well (DDOS), but at the time didn't know why, exactly.
This isn't the end of the world, but certainly is not great and hurts engagement with the content. Is there a solution for this? Perhaps using some sort of webtorrent service like PeerTube where they just fetch the information from another fediverse server instead of the source server? Maybe fetching embeds client-side? At least that would stagger the requests.

Why would I click on a link when you've given me no reason to? Is it too much to ask to provide a single short sentence to describe the thing you're asking others to look at?

Okay, but, like, what is it?

I could ask you literally the same question.

> I don’t understand the point you’re trying to make now.
The point is professional platforms should not be filled with whatever whims come across your mind that day. It is a 100% completely **redundant** function, in the wrong place.
> I really don’t understand why you’re so upset at the app...I don’t understand the multi-comment thread where your argument seems to be “I don’t like it so it shouldn’t exist”.
I don't understand why you think I'm upset. You seem to be equating the number of comments I write with some sort of level of anger. In which case, I must ask why *you're* so upset? I just think it's dumb.

> doesn’t sound like this would be federated?
Then why is "fediverse" in the title of the post?
> That’s quite literally what this app appears to be trying to do.
Except it's not, it's trying to be another social media platform.

On a separate, professional site.
> what’s the harm of it?
The harm is filling a professional website with a bunch of noisy nonsense no one cares about. I don't need to see your federated OnlyFans profile when I'm looking for an employee.

So create a separate account. There's no reason it needs to be on a dedicated platform.

Thats great, you can network and have people skills on social media and link from there to your professional bio. There's no reason for them to be in the same place.

I support the idea of a federated employment platform. However I see no reason for an employment platform to have social features.

If you're playing basic-ass games, an ARM/Android handheld may be a better bet anyway.

On the one hand, who cares?
On the other, maybe it motivates Valve and Steam to be *even better*?

Someone deserves to be fired. Just imagine you're paying someone to do a job and they just **100% completely** outsource it to a machine in 5 seconds and then goes home.

> On Friday afternoon, Ars Technica published an article containing fabricated quotations generated by an AI tool and attributed to a source who did not say them. That is a serious failure of our standards. Direct quotations must always reflect what a source actually said.
> That this happened at Ars is especially distressing. We have covered the risks of overreliance on AI tools for years, and our written policy reflects those concerns. In this case, fabricated quotations were published in a manner inconsistent with that policy. We have reviewed recent work and have not identified additional issues. At this time, this appears to be an isolated incident.
> Ars Technica does not permit the publication of AI-generated material unless it is clearly labeled and presented for demonstration purposes. That rule is not optional, and it was not followed here.
> We regret this failure and apologize to our readers. We have also apologized to Mr. Scott Shambaugh, who was falsely quoted.
Nothing about who put it in there or what you're doing to them?
