@nprofile…jks6 DASH-8-400 range with full pax load is 1586km or 862nm as per their brochuire available at
https://dehavilland.com/dash-8-400/
Vancouver to WInnipeg is 1879km.
Air Canada's web page on its fleet says the range of the Dash-8-400 is 1878km !!! Magically matches YVR-YWG, Magic ! (marketing magic).
https://www.aircanada.com/ca/en/aco/home/fly/onboard/fleet.html#/
Suspect AC may have some Dash-8s fitted with extra tanks, or have fewer passengers.
From what I had read, the turpo props really win on fuel efficiency on the climb, but not on level flight, so for short duration flights, the are more fuel efficient, but not for longer flights. (lower cruise speed = longer time in air than a jet at level flight).

@nprofile…s67t In fairness, repeated announcements of $2.5b makes me wonder if it is the same sum of money that has yet to actually be delivered, or if it is fake money.
Back when the USA provided billions to Ukraine, it was actually used military equipment and ammunition which accountants place a value on as required by law before being shipped. had the nearly-expired ammunition not been given to Ukraine, they would have been written off the books. Tanks/etc were used vehicles which the US military was replacing so snet the hand-me downs to Uktraine and claimed full "new" price for them. (while US military was actually getting the new stuff).
So that $2.5b Canada keep promising needs to be better looked into to see ifd it is just a continuing promise or if funds are actually sent, or just used equipment with over-inflated value shipped.

@nprofile…3ujw Global and CTV are structured as resellers of US programming and even got our regulator (CRTC) to force cable operators to block the US channel during broadcast for which the Canadian network got exclusive distribution rights. So we’re not allowed to watch the US Super Bowl , we can only watch CTV’s version where they use US signal but insert their own ads instead of the Super Bowl ads. In case of 60 minutes, the “tape” was clearly sent to Global before editorial decision made to remove the segment , so Global aired its unedited copy.
Global once inserted a real ad right after SNL cold open when the live broadcast had an SNL parody advert. To reduce the ad substitution errors, Global and CTV started to get advance copies of non-live broadcasts to aid in ad insertion and reduce ,istakes that happened whenthey captiure live broadcast from US station and switches ads on the fly. (must still do that for live broadcasts)

@nprofile…kkwa @nprofile…hpcv @nprofile…e9ef @nprofile…s67t @nprofile…w8de freight railroads are stuck in 1950s addicted to diesel and double stacked containers as well as triple deck car carriers which are too high to fit under usable catenary and too low/wide to allow human-friendly platforms at stations. They only carry bulk items that don’t need fast delivery, so they reduce track maintenance and run long very slow trains. Irony: electric may prevent double stacked containers but by running faster electric trains you can run more trains and handle same capacity.

For those who mised it:
The Alto/Minister announcement on Laval-Gatineau high speed project.
Most question are on the conversative defection, but a few questions on prject whose non-asnwer are telling.
Alto's head whose claim to fame is bragging about never having taken a train did fes up that they haven't made any decisions on progressing south of Laval. So my take is the terminus will be at the De La Concorde train station (already integrated with metro).
Minister spoke of new ROAD bridge in east Gatineau, no mention thatthe rail link will use it. Will Alto have to build its own bridge?
Had Gatineau not already converted the rail right of way to BRT, one could have conceived the rail link crossing Gatineau and rebuiding the Prince of Whales bridge (now a bike path) to have the main station at Bayview (and then continue next to LRT till it joins with VIA tracks to smith falls.

@nprofile…s67t "Also... YOU CAN'T DECARBONIZE OIL. "
Yes you can ! and it is quite easy. You add a spark or a match to oil and it will be decarbonized quickly. (the carbon divorces the old oil and gets married to the cuter, younger O2 and lives happily ever after as CO2 😉
Note: the Sabatier process is used on the ISS to filter out the CO2 from the atmpsphere. Hydrolysis is used to make oxygen from water. They also keep the hydrogen. Then the Sabatier process mixes hydrogen with CO2 and it ends up producing methane and water.
CO2 + 4* H2 = CH4 + 2*H2O.
This consumes much energy and not doable in large scale. And the energy needed would equal the energy originaly produced when you burned the oil in first place.

It becomes political: protest could cost the government votes.

2025-11-19 22:32:10 UTC

@nprofile…s67t One would have to have a look at the actual text of the treaty to see if Haida Nation has jurisdiction over salt water areas and if so, to what distance from shore.
There is a difference between legal jurisdiction and wanting to consult the people who live along shores where ships will pass.
On smaller scale: in Québec, the lake is provincial jurisdiction while a municipality may be responsible for the land around it (and the definition of "lake" in Québec goes up to high water mark in spring).
So I am curious if there is something similar between Haida Nation and the federal with regards to the salt water around Haida Gwai.

@nprofile…s67t Canadian private equity firm Onex bought Westjet lock stock and barrel a few years ago. Sicne then, it has progressively reduced its stake, now downto 75% with Delta Air owning 15% and Korean Air owning 10%
Foreigners can go to 49% ownership after the airline ceases to be Canadian from point of view of rights. Foreign airlines can't sell you a Vancouver-Toronto ticket for instance unless they get 5th freedom rights.
Really not sure what Onex' plans are. When it bought Spirit from Boeing, it also progressively reduced its stake from 100% and when Boeing launched 737 MAX with non-profit contract forced on Spirit, Onex reduced stake to 0%. I assume it intends to do same with Westjet.
It really isn't clear what Westjet's goals are when it introduces such unpopular moves like blocking the seat recline in coach or here, blocking folks on motorized wheelchairs. (And pulling out of eastern canadato return to its original Western Canada focus).

MB/SK northern end of border longitude, latitude :

NWT/NU southern border longitude/latitude: -102.000499,59.99922629999996
(extracted from Natural Resources Canada:
https://ftp.maps.canada.ca/pub/nrcan_rncan/vector/index/html/geospatial_product_index_en.html#link
(SHP files then imported into Google Earth. Note, different encodings of earth,s shape (NAD83 or WGS84 common in Canada) may resultin Google adjusting values).
In Pic 2, the white lines are drawn by Google, the puriople lines are from nat resources canada shape files, and they were imported and ranslated as a st so the base data does have different longitude for SM/MB and NWT/NU. Would have to read the constutution or whetever that defined provinces. NoteL google has straight line for the SK/MB border.

@nprofile…s67t why a double nat?
does docker have a built-in nat? can it be disabled?

2025-11-03 22:53:18 UTC

- reply

@nprofile…s67t Since docker is an app on OS-X, its request to listen to a port needs to be authorized by OS-X's IP stack and it is OS-X that gets the packet from the ethernet port , sees it is a port that is listened to by the docker app and passes packet to the app.
From what I read, you need to go into advanced settings on DOcker to enable listening to privileged ports ( < 1024).
You also need to be concerned about whether your ISP blocks inbound packets to wel known ports (25, 80, 443, 587 etc). If you have a good ISP,that gives you fixed IP, this is generally unrestricted access. But consumer ISPs usually block a whole bunch of inbound ports to make the service unusable by anyone running a server.
(I have "net analyser" on my iPhone, and by forcing it to cellular instead of lan wifi, I can test access from the Internet to my intranet.)

@nprofile…wuyc Carney is stuck between a rock and a hard place. If all of Canada beleived in fighting Climate change, he might have easier job, but with one nameless province who is threateningt o sepearte if they don't get their oil business, by doing "photo op" promise on Keystone XL, Carney may kill two birs with one stone by pleasing both Trump and Smith. What remains to be seen is whether this is a photo op] knowing there is no business case for project to go ahead or whether he really intends to build this. Increasing dependence on oil exports to USA is bad. (even if Oil weren't destroying the planet).

@nprofile…wuyc Thanks. This is interesting. I am curious on whether time at dock will be sufficient to recharge the ferry between crossings, or whether it will only get a full charge overnight which will allow morning crossings on battery and will then need the diesel. Still better than diesel all he time. Usually when one hears "hybrid" it means i runs on diesel almost all the time, and electric is just temporary "assists" when you accelerate.

@nprofile…wuyc Ships with electric engines are nothing new, they have been in use for long time, especially with rotating azipods that provide propulsion in any direction (gret for docking and undocking).
Unless they have architected room for batteries for an all electric design, that ship is never going o be all electric. Storing huge amounts of batteries requires a lot of architecure because if just one battery catches fire, it is sayonara.

@nprofile…wuyc diesel-electric doesn't really save any CO2. The only difference is that while docked, the diesel engine can charge batteries that are used as a boost on departure (so diesel need not rev up to 100% on departure).
