⚠️ Security Alert: Active Impersonation Scams on Telegram
We’ve received multiple reports of scammers actively impersonating OCEAN staff on various platforms, including Telegram, in an attempt to defraud users.
While Telegram may be the most visible problem today, scammers exist on all platforms. Remain vigilant, and always question anything remotely suspicious. Always confirm critical info by multiple contact methods.
[ ⚠️ Full Alert Below 👇 ]
Telegram users have been reporting an increased number of impersonation attempts lately.
Due to fundamental security weaknesses in Telegram's design specifically, these impersonators can appear indistinguishable from legitimate accounts, including using realistic names, handles, profile photos, and operating inside expected groups.
Important:
• OCEAN staff will not initiate meetings using Zoom
• We will never ask you to install meeting software• We will never ask you to run commands (unless you've specifically asked for support)
• We will never ask for Bitcoin or any form of payment
Do not engage with anyone making these requests, even if they appear legitimate.
For your safety, we strongly recommend contacting OCEAN only through more secure channels, such as Signal, IRC, or Discord. Our official channels are listed on the website.

The data is in.
On a 12-month rolling basis, corroborated by multiple miners, OCEAN earns you more.
+3.6% more Bitcoin earned on TIDES vs. FPPS
Meaning every 1 Eh/s on OCEAN earned +6.27 BTC more than FPPS.
Real numbers. Real value delivered.
More for the miners. 💪🌊

Block 913272 was found yesterday by a small miner: @nprofile…vqfq revealed that it was him, using a QAxe++, a @nprofile…d6j2 and DATUM on OCEAN.
Seeing miners of all sizes have their voices heard by mining their own blocks and seeing decentralization happen in real time is why we do this.
Keep hashing, have a great weekend and congratulations, pleb miner. 🫡

🚀 DATUM Hits 100 Blocks 🌊
Miners all over the world are letting the industry know that decentralization matters.
In less than a year, OCEAN’s DATUM Mining Protocol has spread like wildfire. 📈 Over 65% of OCEAN’s miners are using DATUM, and that number is growing every day.
This means block template construction is making its way back into the hands of the miners, which is not only the most profitable for miners on OCEAN but also one of the best things for Bitcoin.
Decentralization is happening.
Bitcoin is becoming censorship resistant again.
The future is starting to look bright again.
To all of our miners who helped make this possible: Thank you.
We’re humbled by your support and trust.
To all of our future miners: what are you waiting for?
DATUM is ready when you are. 💪

𝗢𝗖𝗘𝗔𝗡: 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆-𝗙𝗼𝗰𝘂𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗣𝗼𝗼𝗹
OCEAN stands alone as the only pool built from the ground up for total transparency—instantly accessible the moment you connect. Point your miners to OCEAN, and you’re met with a clear view of everything we do: no hidden fees, no murky calculations, just real-time insights at your fingertips. From block construction to fees and payouts, you can see it all and easily confirm your rewards match your contributions.
This openness drives profitability for you and innovation for the ecosystem.
For your business, it’s a game-changer. For the first time, miners can track payout performance and hashrate down to the proof of work level, and boost their earnings potential with unparalleled clarity and optionality. The data from our miners shows that this level of transparency and freedom can mean substantially more monthly mining revenue.

𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆.
Transparency into everything surrounding how pools calculate payouts is the only way to ensure maximum profits for miners. Every share, every reward, every payout should be completely verifiable with zero guesswork. Eliminating any and all “fuzzy math”—intentional or otherwise––and ensuring miners like you can independently verify their earnings, no blind trust required.
But, does any pool provide this level of transparency?

𝗗𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗶𝗻 𝗕𝗶𝘁𝗰𝗼𝗶𝗻 𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴?
Without transparency, miners can’t verify they’re being paid fairly for their hashrate contribution. Take FPPS (Full Pay Per Share) pools, for example. Many assume that contributing 10% of the pool’s hashpower means they’ll get 10% of the block rewards, minus a simple 2% fee (or whatever the pool advertises). Sounds straightforward, right?
Wrong. In reality, miners often earn far less than expected. Why? FPPS pools need massive reserves to guarantee daily payouts, especially during stretches of bad luck. To build and maintain these reserves, pools introduce hidden fees, murky spreads, “lost” shares, and opaque calculations. Meaning miners are left guessing the true value of their accepted shares and often left earning much less than they’d expect.
So, how do you fix this?

Our mission to radically decentralize Bitcoin mining is in full throttle, and we look forward to the next 365 days marking a major shift in the direction of mining as more miners reclaim their sovereignty with DATUM.
We're thankful for all of the miners who have made this possible by mining with us. Keep the hashes coming and the blocks flowing.

Taking a moment to celebrate OCEAN's 100th block milestone. OCEAN has seen a spectacular boost in hash these past few months.
And we're just getting started.
To our miners – Thank You.
To those waiting on the beach: come on in. The water's warm, and the blocks are flowing.
As of block 100:
432.95877508 BTC mined (including 20.45877508 BTC in transaction fees). https://video.nostr.build/3d3f1457effcdf9309422ea0b8a6ca5910aa6a61d1139e3b88dff3b38dccd179.mp4

At 2pm:
Thank you for your continued patience. We are working diligently to recover connectivity. In the meantime, we can confirm that all our servers, including backups are intact—no data loss has occurred, the entire share log is secure, and no payments from the network were affected.
This was caused by a series of calamities, all Acts of God, interfering with several redundencies of fiber and satellite communications at multiple locations—not malicious actors or sabotage. It bears reminding, however, that any time communications to the Bitcoin network are lost, then the pool is not mining and we are not finding blocks. Please ensure your own backups and redundancies are in place accordingly.
We will continue to provide updates when available.

2024-09-27 23:22:28 UTC

Sorry for the delayed posting.
At 9am:
Due to the hurricane, our main servers and several redundancies were adversely affected by the storms. This is causing a widespread, but expectedly short-lived outage on OCEAN.
While this is our first outage on the pool of any kind, outages, however small or short, are unacceptable. Without revealing the details of our security profile, the chances of this happening were astronomically low, but non-zero. Even that is too high, so we will work to ensure that this doesn’t happen again.
Please ensure your own backups and redundancies are in place accordingly. We’ll have further updates when we have more information.

You can already use bitaxes, though they won't get paid out in the coinbase for decades. You'd need to set up Lightning.

BREAKING: Bitcoin mining centralization.
OCEAN reaches 56% of unique miners receiving newly generated coins.
Our latest block paid out 50 unique Bitcoin addresses from the coinbase, meaning 50 people received bitcoins directly from Bitcoin itself, not from a middle man.
Over the past six months, 174 addresses have received bitcoin payouts direct from the blockchain.
97 of these were miners mining on OCEAN.
This is the way. Join the revolution. https://image.nostr.build/ https://image.nostr.build/c919eca2d1cd48daedc45c985ab7d61c33fe371d2dd97f7bc7275fb03ac3db15.png d92872452c388990787660e1ff890c9e30df6e615506d020fd83df189819e93e.png

All this is to say, if your over the difficulty target set required for the proofs submitted, it doesn't matter if you're just over it or way way over it to the point where you were just one bit flip away from solving an actual block - it's all one share :)

2024-08-30 03:30:27 UTC

- reply

The last part of what I wrote was confusing.
Say the S21 working at default difficulty is finding millions of times more shares than the bitaxe, the pool then adjusts making the difficulty orders of magnitude higher. Shares will then start coming in far slower and each one will be multiplied by the same factor that the difficulty was increased.
This is why all shares in pool stats are equal.

2024-08-30 03:27:10 UTC

- reply

Shares aren't that. They're just proof that you did some work, that is just solving a block at an arbitrary difficulty.
You aren't given more shares for getting "closer" to the correct answer, but if you're given a higher difficulty target (appropriate for more powerful machines) then your shares will be worth more than other shares. BUT pools will always normalize this on the website/stats so you don't have to do any adjustment.
So you're kind of right but that's only of concern to the pool back end.
In reality a bitaxe share and a S21 Pro share are going to be worth the same, it's just that the S21 will be finding them way faster, be given a higher difficulty target by the pool, then return fewer shares that are worth more than previously. So if you double the difficulty you send to a worker, each share it submits will be worth two shares.

Nothing is 100% reliable on Lightning. We will have attempted it already - if you didn't receive it shoot a DM.

2024-08-27 07:52:24 UTC

3 is your issue. Private channels don't work in practice, though in theory they're supposed to.
Ocean payouts on Lightning have information made public (so that everyone can varify payouts) making private channels not private anyway.

2024-08-26 02:26:24 UTC

- reply

Also I'll add - if Lightning just keeps not working, if you get to the on-chain threshold you'll just be paid out that way.

2024-08-26 02:25:53 UTC

- reply

We're on it - Nostr client issues lol.
Sounds like you set up Lightning correctly wrt generating a valid BOLT12 and signed it with a valid sig.
Great.
Now here's a checklist to follow if payments still aren't working:
1. Am I using Core Lightning?
2. Do I have a channel with sufficient inbound liquidity?
3. Is it public?
4. Payments still failing? Connect to our node with this command `lightning-cli connect 029ef2ce43571727104099576c633b2233bfeb8dc18b476f93540a32207da9e9a4@16.63.81.71:9735`

2024-08-26 02:23:56 UTC

You need an on chain address because we need a way to pay you if Lightning doesn't work for some reason. There are no accounts, things have to work a little differently.

Starting on Saturday, we'll be doing integration testing of the new @nprofile…e544 Accelerator on the "OCEAN Recommended" template. Our efforts here will be consistent with our existing work towards maximum transparency and will help ensure decentralized mining has access to the same fee markets as centralized pools.
More info in the coming weeks.
