DO NOT trust them to be following what you agreed on. We discovered every optional service had been added in, increasing our loan amount by $10K 😳 Had to go back in yesterday & have them cancel them all. 🤬

Do illicit drugs or alcohol play a role in your story?
Characters indulge in a variety of alcoholic drinks & mood-altering substances--usually in potions, but occasionally smoked--all legal. There is a back-market potion trade, those cooked up outside of guild oversight, which can cause havoc from time to time. The library has dealt with plenty of those cases. Potions become a problem in the north after magery returns, as there is a lag in creating a guild system.

#ScribesAndMakers Sep 25 Our next featured creator uses a separate Fedi account dedicated to their book. Do you use different accounts for different creative purposes?
I have 2 social media accounts--one on Mastodon & one on Bluesky--both are author accounts rather than personal, though I do mention personal stuff. I no longer have any personal social media. I do have separate business & personal email accts.

Have your characters’ journeys affected your own life? If so, how?
Not so much their journeys but their attitude. They have hope for the future & the belief they can make a difference, or at least they prefer to be better people whether or not it changes anything. Sometimes I get extremely angry & discouraged about the state of the world, but writing their words & thoughts reminds me of my better nature.

What character from one of your own books or someone else's would you want to spend a day with? What would you do?
One of the travelers. We could go anywhere they could get a memory of. Would be fun hopping through towns and countries for a day.

2026-09-20 11:55:31 UTC

#WordWeavers Sep 20
How do your characters access water or whatever they need to drink?
Pretty much like we do. Mages have plumbing, though there was a mageric component to get the water running through & modern day human societies have comparable systems to ours.
Unless they live in the early or mid-Dragon Age north. Then they are stuck with drawing water from wells or streams because plumbing didn't yet exist for them. Queen Jade introduces it after visiting a mage country.

How are people so evil? I can't even comprehend this. They don't even seem human. Although maybe I expect too much from humans? Probably religious programming about us being a "superior species."

By the end of your story, how many injuries has your MC had?
Well, it covers over 2000 years so she gets her share. She sees some action, though Maggie is more the person behind the scenes who sends fighters out than the one who does the actual fighting. Most of her injuries are of the emotional or spiritual variety.

2026-09-16 11:39:51 UTC

#WordWeavers Sep 16
If your MC were elected mayor of your own town, would you stay or move? Why?
Okay, first, the place where I live is unincorporated. We've got no government but the county. Maggie would have to take steps to change that, and would be our first mayor ever. Which would be cool, because she is brilliant and has the power to compel anyone coming in to cause trouble--like, I don't know, ICE, flock camera installers, debased politicians--to get the fuck out and leave us alone.

Your characters get one completely ordinary day with no villains, quests, murders, wars, prophecies, romantic disasters, or impending apocalypses. How do they spend it?
They'd go someplace nice. Maybe wine and oeuvre tasting in the near eastland vineyards and flower fields. It's a touristy spot, but Maggie had an enjoyable time there in the past. They have a great inn which serves wonderful dishes and baked goods with local honey.

Share a description from your WIP that establishes atmosphere without explicitly naming the emotion.
The cliff cities were a series of walled settlements joined by a paved road, like beads on a string. We proceeded grimly through a row of melted metal gates, each marking a new town. All looked the same. Only buildings made of stone remained. Dark windows, devoid of shades. Disintegrated doors. Square jack o’ lantern faces, ash piled around them like snow drifts.

Have you ever listened to an audiobook where the reader had a good voice, but not the 'right' voice?
I've never listened to any audiobook.
I did quit watching a Korean program on Netflix recently because they'd dubbed an actress I knew from another show in English with a completely different voice. She speaks English herself on that other show & is one of my favorite characters, so this jarred me completely out of the story.

I am an Amazon and FB hater, yes, but I don't tell other authors what to do. Plus I have books on Amazon (though not exclusively) so I've no right to talk. 😆 It's hard enough to sell books as an indie, people need to do what works for them.
I've also noticed revolving hate when it comes to sites. Like you're told to dump Y, use Z instead, & the next week there's an issue with Z.

What seemingly insignificant object in your story carries a lot of emotional weight?
Maggie has a locket with a dried bluebonnet inside. That flower species seems to have only grown on Earth.

2026-09-04 11:36:24 UTC

#ScribesAndMakers Sep 4
If ebooks stopped being produced, how much would you miss them?
Terribly. It would make it so much harder for me to read and publish.
My home has no more space for physical books & my arthritic hands can't hold them for as long as I can hold my phone to read an ebook. Plus I can't modify the font or brightness or carry my library around wherever I go. I won't publish paper books until a print on demand company offers recycled or treeless paper.

2026-09-03 11:46:48 UTC

#ScribesAndMakers Sep 3
Which ebook reader do you use?
I read on my phone. I have a Kindle app, which I keep so I don't lose access to books I've bought in the past, though I don't buy from Amazon anymore. And I have an app called Lithium, which I use to read books purchased direct from authors.

How do you think where you live affects your creative work?
It's normally very quiet here, which helps me focus to write.

2026-09-02 13:26:16 UTC

#WordWeavers Sep 2
What would your MC notice first upon entering a crowded room?
Maggie's computer brain immediately starts logging & saving details: who is here, their appearance, what they're doing, where they're located, who is interacting with whom, who looks shady, who might be a threat

I'm curious why you gave up being a lawyer (well, not *why* exactly--I wouldn't want to be one either.) What about it pushed you over the edge?
And what about writing and publishing do you find most fulfilling?

#WordWeavers Aug 29
What writing accomplishment are you quietly proud of?
Overcoming my natural introversion and low self-esteem to put my work out in the world. I have been doing it long enough now it feels normal and I no longer panic over it.

Our next featured creator is a baker. Describe a baked good you enjoy.
I don't bake and am, sadly, gluten free, so I don't get a lot of delicious baked treats. GF stuff can be kind of sad. There are a couple of places around here that carry good GF cupcakes & muffins so I indulge once in a while. I keep thinking about getting a bread maker & making my own GF bread which might be better than store bought but haven't gotten serious about that yet.

My Midnight Crow book has a bird shifter MC.

Who is your most despicable character and how do you feel about them?
Kumalin is an ancient wind mage who has lived so long he's not really humanoid at this point. He has no redeeming qualities. I love him, cause he's fun to write. I have very few complete villains in my work so I take full advantage of him.
On the other hand, there is Eithelwaithe, his first consort, who might be worse than him. She gives me the creeps. She's like a living night terror.

While editing, what most clearly signals a pacing issue?
If I find myself getting bored because the chapter seems to drag. This is usually too much dialogue or narrative passages which need to be revised, moved, or deleted. I seem to have more of a problem with too slow than too fast, although I occasionally will need to add something.

2026-01-02 14:51:33 UTC

What are your wildest (writing-related) dreams for this year?
I have this truly ambitious project this year of starting my own blog to serialize my next book. Never did anything like this before, but new challenges are always fun. The dream would be for everything to work as intended without disasters and to gain a decent-sized readership. And, oh, sell more books, gotta include that. A LOT more books, since I'm dreaming.

That's freakin un-American. 🤬 In CA, I have to be "no party preference," but I was always independent in TX and other states I lived in.

Someone in Portland showed up to an ICE protest in an inflatable frog suit. Made them look ridiculous. They sprayed tear gas in his air vent, but the frogs kept multiplying. Guy went viral, went from a local hero to national.

Really angry to learn #today that one of my lovely creative friends deleted her account because of harassment. This isn't the first time I've heard of this happening here. Seems like the normal social media "tools" we use to combat this problem don't work as well in the fediverse. I hope we can figure out how to do better for all users, otherwise we need to drop the smugness about being "best."

The only things like this I created were a few promos on Instagram using my own photos. I no longer have an account there but have been pondering trying out Pinterest where I can do more of this sort of thing.

If money wasn't an issue, where would you arrange a #WordWeavers writing retreat?
The UK Lake District. It's one of my favorite places & I think they'd be something for everyone. Lovely nature views. Hiking. People who prefer not to be out in the wild can relax in historic taverns or tour stately homes and gardens.

Could you imagine a story in the same world where your MC is the antagonist?
Maggie? Absolutely. She does plenty of antagonistic stuff.
Actually, most of my MCs have done questionable things. None of them are perfect. They have their bad days. In fact, for most of my "heroes," in general, you will find some regular people who disapprove of them. Plenty of their "heroic" actions have had a cost & plenty of them have made blunders.

On a scale from 1 to 10, how safe is your world?
Hmm. How safe is any world, really? I'd give my own world like a 4, maybe. Ardonna might be a 6. There are many things/beings that could kill you but also some relatively safe places where one's fellow citizens (humanoid or otherwise) prefer to get along & the climate is agreeable. You also have more recourse to bargain with most species.

On a scale from 1 to 10, how comfortable is your MC's life?
Maggie's comfort level changes and varies throughout the book. It would be hard to assign a number to it. She starts out at a 1 for sure, and rises from there, with some dips.

I made this planter about a year ago out of cinder blocks. It's looking pretty sad now as about everything along the outside has died in the summer heat.😭 I'll need to redo it once the weather gets nicer, figure out what can survive there.

How many POV characters does your story have?
Mine have a single, 1st-person POV character. I like to dive deep into my MC's head. As a reader, the more POVs a book has the less I usually like it. I DNF'd one book when a new POV showed up in book 7. Yet some of my favorites have multiples. 🤷
My books are all in a single series telling their aspect of one world story, so could be considered a divided multiple POV 😆 work. Books can show the same events from different views.

How's your creativity going? Is there anything you would like help with?
Creativity is okay, although I'm fighting through a low mood right now. My mom passed last week after sitting in a nursing home with Alzheimer's for the last couple of years. I hated to see her like that--it was definitely past time for her, & she is well out of the current hell hole this country is in which might have led to her losing care--but it's still processing in the recesses of my head.
