With the Nos 1.2 update, you can use Nos to create, edit, and delete lists of your favorite people and accounts! We're also bringing you fixes for the biggest issues in the previous version:
- Fixed: restarting app reverts to Following rather than selected list or relay
- Fixed: lists change positions randomly
- Fixed: adding and removing relays is not reflected in the feed filter
- Fixed: text fields sometimes don't work on onboarding screens
- Fixed: main action button is not visible on iPad on "Build Your Network" onboarding screen
- Fixed: crash when processing a malformed delete event
Have a nice day!

We’ve added lists to [Nos](https://nos.social/install) in version 1.1! You can create a list in another app like listr.lol and then view the feed for that list in Nos. Here’s the full set of changes in this version:
- Added lists to the app so you can see feeds from specific accounts you've added to the list. You can create your lists with listr and view their feeds from the Nos app.
- Nos now publishes the hashtags it finds in your note when you post. This means it works the way you’ve always expected it to work.
- Updated the default relays that are added when you create an account.
- Fixed display of Mastodon usernames
- Fixed crash related to tracking delete events.
Have a great day!

I’m curious why you need two accounts to switch from public to private relays. Nos and I believe Amethyst allow you to post to specific relays. Nos also allows you to read from specific relays. Damus has some of this functionality as well.

We periodically get requests for an Android version of Nos. So let’s do an informal poll today.
If you are an Android user and would like to see an Android Nos app, like this post. Bonus, share what makes you interested in Nos in the comments or via DM!

2024-08-13 11:35:20 UTC

A semi-regular reminder that Nos allows both deletion of notes and ephemeral notes.
Is it perfect? No but we’ve found that most of the major clients and relays respect both!

- Added push notifications for zaps.
- Added zaps to the Notifications view.

- Disable the Post button while images are still uploading. Thanks @vien-eaker!
- Improved app performance on first login by requesting fewer events from relays.

- Fixed a bug where mentions could be duplicated when typing in the middle of one.
- Re-enabled autocomplete when composing a note.

We’re channeling the joy of the revolution with our June Cohort. Whether you are looking for dance music for an upcoming gathering or inspiration on how to make an impact, this month’s cohort has it all. Inspired by this passage from Emma Goldman’s autobiography, Living My Life, we hope following this latest group of Creators, Activists and Journalists will bring some joy to your feed and summer!
"At the dances I was one of the most untiring and gayest. One evening a cousin of Sasha [Alexander Berkman], a young boy, took me aside. With a grave face, as if he were about to announce the death of a dear comrade, he whispered to me that it did not behoove an agitator to dance. Certainly not with such reckless abandon, anyway. It was undignified for one who was on the way to become a force in the anarchist movement. My frivolity would only hurt the Cause.
I grew furious at the impudent interference of the boy. I told him to mind his own business, I was tired of having the Cause constantly thrown into my face. I did not believe that a Cause which stood for a beautiful ideal, for anarchism, for release and freedom from conventions and prejudice, should demand the denial of life and joy. I insisted that our Cause could not expect me to become a nun and that the movement should not be turned into a cloister. If it meant that, I did not want it. "I want freedom, the right to self-expression, everybody’s right to beautiful, radiant things." Anarchism meant that to me, and I would live it in spite of the whole world--prisons, persecution, everything. Yes, even in spite of the condemnation of my own comrades I would live my beautiful ideal.”

Thanks for asking these questions! The Residency and Accelerator programs are designed to allow Creators and Journalists to experiment with micropayments via Zaps. When we onboard Creators and Journalists we offer them the opportunity to also set up a wallet via Primal so they can receive Zaps (and send them!). Those that are not in NY state have taken us up on the offer if they do not already have a wallet set up.
Based on what we’re seeing anecdotally - the minimum Zap amount is likely too low. 42 Sats is $0.007 in USD. It might be good to bump it to $0.10 or $0.25.
Listening to some creators (many of whom are not in the Residency program) they observe that Nostr users are more likely to zap for “hot takes” or “memes” rather than original content. Today Zaps are treated a lot like a “like” in the UI and this might be one of the challenges. Are we asking people to Zap at the right point in time or is there a different point in time when it makes more sense to ask someone to Zap?
The middle ground appears to be well curated feeds where people are sharing content from elsewhere with some commentary on why they are sharing. In these instances it is the curator who is receiving the Zaps rather than the original Creator.
We would be curious to hear from folks about their thoughts on any of the above including @npub1lrn…qnw5 ‘’ ’s question about alternative micropayment options. Predicting future behavior is always a challenge, but if someone is not zapping bc of lack of access to Bitcoin for example, that’s helpful information to have.

Hidden Feature Friday
This is the first in a series of notes about the hidden features of Nos and Nostr. With so many developers and applications it's easy to lose track of what exists across the network. During the next couple of months, we’ll feature often requested, but little known features on Fridays!
EXPIRING POSTS
Yes, Nostr supports expiring posts as does the Nos.social app. To see it in action, watch this video of creating a time-limited note in Nos.

Have feedback? Reply in the comments or reach out to us!

Of course, but we are trying to get a broad variety of people on who are going to use bitcoin and lightning but are talking about other things. One thing we discovered in our user research was that the nostr community was welcoming and friendly, many folks who didn't know about bitcoin liked using zaps, but that people wanted to see people talking about other things.

@npub1r8w…50hn you've already been doing this!

We're excited to announce a new initiative to get creators and journalists on to Nostr. This is a project organized by nos.social with @npub12vk…pugg, @npub1w0r…cu4x, @npub13my…v3qk, @npub18m7…q955, and @npub1yzv…rf8q. The goal is to get a diversity of content on to nostr and show those creators and journalists that the nostr model of zaps and the new subscription content over nostr is a better alternative to centralized advertising driven platforms. #value4value
Please share this with creators and journalists you know who are already on Nostr and also those who might want to join. This will include both getting these folks on to the nostr apps which make sense for them, setting them up with a wallet, teaching them how to be successful on nostr, and importantly promoting them through a bunch of channels on nostr so they can build and audience.
We don't have the deep pockets of meta and tiktok, nor their powerful AI driven algorithms, but we've got something that can be more powerful, people.
Creators and Journalists know they're stuck sharecropping on centralized platforms that can demonetize or delete or just shadow ban their accounts. One day their content gets broadcast to the world, the next the algorithm doesn't even show it to their followers. Their revenue is dependent on getting a cut from an opaque and arbitrary advertising system.
So, share these links, if you're a creator or journalist sign up, and when we start promoting these folks on nostr, check out what they're doing and if you like it, send them zaps. This is open to both existing nostr creators and journalists and new ones we'll onboard.

We've been conducting user research in to Nostr in order to make the apps and community more accessible.
Here's the results of our first round of research. There's lots about nostr and user perspectives. One big one to jump out was that normies found copying and pasting nsec keys to login to be just fine, it was folks who thought of them as being similar to a bitcoin wallet who were worried about it. This lines up with how many people consider phone numbers, email accounts, and social media accounts to be disposable, sure you might lose them, but you just inform the folks who you care about of your new address and move on. This wasn't what we were expecting to hear!

Due to an unfortunate error we lost current registrations on our Nostr-to-Twitter crossposting service. If you had already registered, please visit https://connect.nos.social/ and log in again. And if you haven't and this sounds interesting please check it out and let us know what you think!

2023-12-01 05:58:31 UTC

The nos.social app has a pre-loaded list of users we think new users might want to follow. Some are people publishing directly on nostr, some are bridged in to nostr via mostr.pub. The goal is to present to users a bunch of kinds of content they might find interesting. There aren't many bitcoiners on the list because we feel it's already pretty easy to find those folks on nostr.
We feel there should be many lists like this, and also that a suggested followers list isn't a long term solution. Perhaps an interim solution would be for there to be many lists for users to choose from, say, environmentalists or free software hackers or uruguayans, etc... Longer term we need contact discovery and algorithmic recommendations of follow suggestions.
For folks interested, we've published these identities on nostr itself as a list. Here it is on listr: https://listr.lol/npub1pu3vqm4vzqpxsnhuc684dp2qaq6z69sf65yte4p39spcucv5lzmqswtfch/30000/naddr1qq4xc6tnw3ez6ce5x43rzdnxxgknqwpcvskngepjxsknsdenxvkkxetzxuenxdm9xejryvcpzemhxue69uhhyetvv9ujumn0wd68ytnzv9hxgq3qpu3vqm4vzqpxsnhuc684dp2qaq6z69sf65yte4p39spcucv5lzmqxpqqqp6nqv044qr

In order for us to to achieve the full vision of Nostr we need it to be for everybody, not just the current bitcoiner community.
@nprofile…l8dl recently gave a talk at Nostrasia, diving into how we're tackling this. It's not just about adding new features; it's about creating a space where everyone feels they belong and can share their voice without worry.
We're exploring community-managed moderation because we believe the best people to understand what's appropriate for a community are its members. It's about giving you the tools to help keep things friendly and respectful.
If you're curious about the specifics or want to hear our thoughts on balancing safety with diverse community norms, take a look at @nprofile…l8dl 's full talk here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9pGZ2epF8ZY
We're all ears for any thoughts or suggestions you might have after watching. Let's make Nostr better, together.
