Little Endian vs Caregiver Endian

2026-08-08 06:43:42 UTC

https://danluu.com/web-bloat/When I was at Google, someone told me a story about a time that “they” completed a big optimization push only to find that measured page load times increased. When they dug into the data, they found that the reason load times had increased was that they got a lot more traffic from Africa after doing the optimizations. The team’s product went from being unusable for people with slow connections to usable, which caused so many users with slow connections to start using the product that load times actually increased.

@nprofile…8d0p @nprofile…dey5 @nprofile…c8pt Using cross-platform software that's not Linux specific clearly isn't what makes something into a Linux distribution.i mostly agree, but consider this:
cross-platform software is a very defining trait of what a lot of people are looking for in a "Linux phone" and most "Linux software".
a lot of people want to not rely entirely on a single entity for a core part of their operating system.
some people are moving away from Windows to rely less on Microsoft. some people are moving away from Android to rely less on Google.
it's not then desirable to have applications that are "largely written for specifically Linux" because then, if you want to replace Linux, you're screwed. you yourself have expressed in this very thread that Linux has some terrible design decisions and we'd be much better off with a microkernel that's fundamentally memory-safe. one project that comes to mind here for me is RedoxOS (a microkernel and userspace drivers, written in Rust), which is super immature and not at all usable on real devices, but does already run X11 and is largely compatible with a lot of open-source software written mainly for Linux, with usually minimal changes, just like all the BSDs.
is RedoxOS and BSD what anyone means by Linux phone? no, obviously not. that's ridiculous. and that's not what i'm saying.
but for anyone building an alternative to A Large Existing Ecosystem (Windows, Android, Linux), an important part must be cross-platform applications and technologies that interoperate and can be granularly swapped out if one component fails or is unmaintained or whatever. because individual projects don't have the resources available to Google or the Linux Foundation.
strictly speaking, this has nothing to do with being a "Linux distribution" or not. but i don't think it's entirely unreasonable to say that the "Linux desktop" is largely built on cross-platform software, and so is "Linux" as a whole, and so are "Linux phones".
is it ridiculous to refer to cross-platform software as "Linux"? yes, because it's literally wrong. but because of the prevalence of Linux, a lot of these open solutions were developed by and for Linux users, and only happen to not be strictly tied to the kernel on a very intrinsic level. just because it's cross-platform doesn't make it "not Linux software" (and just because it's not software doesn't make it "not Linux software". X11 and Wayland and XDG desktop portals are all protocols and specifications; but also refer to software that implements them)
i'm not arguing that GrapheneOS is not literally a Linux distribution. but, you said yourself, almost all apps written for it are very specific to the AOSP userspace and specifically the Linux kernel. this is an anti-feature in my mind, and antithetical to what i actually want in most of my software. I'd love to be able to take my apps with me to any kernel and init system and compositor. "Linux apps" largely let me do that. "Android apps" largely don't. "Linux phones" generally represent freedom from vendor lock-in. not a sparkling, open source, private, and secure variant of vendor lock-in.
is this name ("Linux phone") terrible for the idea that i've described? Yes! Because it doesn't capture the core idea of what anyone wants from it. it's only technically correct in the sense that literally all viable implementations of it currently use the Linux kernel (because there's no alternative worth a damn).
but i'm pretty sure that nearly nobody actually cares about "this phone is using specifically the Linux kernel" as a virtue in and of itself, because that's not the end goal. the goal it's compatibility with the largely-cross-platform apps written for desktop Linux. If anything, the claims are backwards.yeah... paradoxically, "Linux phone" to me mostly means "less reliant on Linux than other phones". this is the wonder of natural language. imprecise as ever.
but there isn't a better term. not yet, anyhow. because the ecosystem almost entirely revolves around Linux. there's no viable alternative to Linux. not for phones. but i reckon *once there is a competitor that runs all the same cross-platform apps just as well*, we might see people shifting to a better name for this "cross-platform platform".

@nprofile…8d0p @nprofile…dey5 @nprofile…c8pt the correct terminology to use would be systemd phonesi think the main defining part of "Linux phones" is that they run generally the same applications as "desktop Linux", that being, they use XDG specifications and such. apps run on Wayland or X11, interfacing mostly with XDG desktop portals for a lot of lower level non-windowing functionality, perhaps through something like Flatpak with FlatHub for the primary app store.
most importantly: that you can just run any ol' Linux software on it without too much hassle. that's not really possible on GrapheneOS because it's hardened quite a bit in a way that makes sense for Android, but makes running things like the Nix package manager, and most Wayland compositors, completely unviable. (yes, a lot of stuff can run through Proot, see: Nix-on-droid, but that's a hack and has a significant performance cost)
is it technically wrong to call the XDG stack just "Linux"? sure, at any rate it's an imprecise name. does it almost always come with systemd? yes, but it's not a requirement, and there's plenty of distros that work with apps built for this userspace that don't ship systemd at all. but i think this is the thing most people mean by "Linux" in most cases, and certainly when contrasting a "Linux phone" against an "Android phone".

need to share files? select your file, and send your friends a magnet link! seed it directly from your browser!
there's no middleman storage server, so there's no size limit, or download speed cap. it's only constrained by what 🫵 YOUR computer is capable of uploading.
sharing with a large group of friends? because it's a torrent, the more they download and seed, the faster everyone else can download it too!! even if your computer/network can't send the large file that many times to all your friends that fast

MANY ORPHANED AUR PACKAGES ARE BEING TARGETED WITH AN INFOSTEALER.
the Arch User Repository package alvr has been orphaned, then adopted by a threat actor who immediately updated it with an infostealer. If you have this package on your system and updated it recently, you've been compromised. This is not a result of any upstream compromise; it's just that one AUR package. in particular, the alvr-bin sister package seems to be fine.
here's the relevant thread for alvr from the Arch Linux mailing list. alvr seems to be the first package compromised and/or the first one that was noticed. it was updated maliciously at 2026-06-11 13:53:45 UTC (2026-06-11T13:53:45.000Z) and reverted approximately 3-4 hours after that.
SEVERAL OTHER PACKAGES ARE BEING TARGETED WITH THE SAME MALWARE: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5
AUR mailing list megathread <-- over 400 (!!!!) packages have the malicious npm dependency
they all share in common that they will install the atomic-lockfile package from NPM (so, here's a live link to the actual malware. do not install that). they were all orphan takeovers. as far as i can tell, all of the ones i linked have been reverted to known safe versions. including alvr.
this is an infostealer, meaning it exfiltrates sensitive data from your system such as login credentials. removing the malware will not undo the damage. moreover, uninstalling the malicious package will not remove the malware because it persists as a systemd service that stays on your system indefinitely.
it executes as an npm preinstall script, and the npm package is installed by the AUR packages. this means that simply installing the malicious versions of any of these packages will compromise you. it does not require you to do anything more afterwards. again, the malware persists if you uninstall the malicious packages
to check if you've been compromised, look in /etc/systemd/system and ~/.config/systemd/user for a recently added .service file with a random name. that's the persistence mechanism and the most obvious mark that you've been compromised.

Attached is a screenshot of an announcement from the "Linux VR Adventures" discord.
i know we all hate discord, but LVRA has a lot of auxiliary discussion, so here's an invite link
of special interest, here's a malware analysis thread. Feel free to follow it in real time, or contribute, or whatever. Whanos has produced a preliminary analysis blog post that contains a lot of important information about the malware.

2026-03-20 09:34:38 UTC

dear friends
is there a way on Linux/PipeWire to do screen capture with all audio sources on my system being recorded as separate tracks? i.e. rather than monitoring my output device, i'd like OBS (or similar) to create capture devices for each of my audio sources. so, e.g. game audio in one track, browser playing music on a separate track, and voice chat in a third track. and this is crucial: i don't want to manually configure one or two tracks here, i want it to automatically capture everything separately!!!! also, is there a video container format that even supports such a file? dynamically created audio tracks midway through? surely that exists?
additionally, do you know any chat apps/modifications (especially discord extensions, but others welcome too) that make it easy to not just capture the chat app individually, but each participant individually?
---
the end goal here is to make my system audio mixing at capture time irrelevant. no matter if i can hear a particular source or particular user very well, i want it to be easy as fuck to fix that in editing to make sure that source is comprehensible after all.

bad video game idea: the stereotypical trope of "omg everyone forgot your name pls enter it in the character creation screen during the opening scene" but it happens every time you meet a new character. you have to introduce yourself to everyone. you constantly need to re type your name. you can change it and have different identities in different parts of the game world. in one of the endings, you eventually get caught in a web of lies and everyone realizes that you've been responsible for like thirty major events that they all thought happened because of completely separate people.

@nprofile…mfuv Signing is a gesture and the signature is just an artifact created by that gestureNo? that's not what it is? If the artifact carries no meaning, then it should not be created. You can just say "Yeah I agree to these terms" verbally to another party, and that's legally binding in theory. Even moreso with additional witnesses (a "notary"?)
The point of a signature is obviously to prove that I agree. It is to prove my identity. After the fact. And a scribble on paper that can be trivially reproduced by a malicious actor, but is difficult for me to create accurately every time, is the polar opposite of a good mechanism to do this.I'd much rather rely on paper signatures and live with the resulting potential for fraud than be required by law to run a certain app on my phone. My phone is mine and I'd like it to stay that way.I agree! I don't think the law should require that you install an app on your phone in order to be able to enter into any contract whatsoever, or otherwise attest your identity.
We have solutions for this already: ID cards. In my example of the postal courier, it'd make sense if I was promoted for e-ID,, OR had the option to show my physical ID card to the mailperson, in order to prove that I was the rightful recipient. That's already how it works at post offices here, but for some reason not when receiving parcels to my door.
"Oh, but I don't think everyone should need to show their government ID to everyone" That's not the point!!! Government ID and government e-ID are only necessary to prove your identity to the government, but every single use of a signature elsewhere can be replaced with something similar. The point is to use any mechanism with security features!!! Library cards, for instance, are not government ID but are still used to verify your identity to the library.
Imagine if we had bank transfers where the only security mechanism was "Yeah the sender wrote their name so 100% legit trust". Oh wait, that's a thing actually, and it's horrifying! Checks bounce all the time!!! But banks already issue secure hardware authenticators to every customer, called a bank card ({debit, credit} card), and it's ludicrous that those are not always required to perform operations in some cases!

2025-12-24 17:40:03 UTC

paper signatures are so stupid.
i have literally never had a consistent signature scribble in my life. there is no way in hell this should ever be meaningful at all as any sign of authenticity that i really approve of this document.
the absolute dumbest signatures i've ever been prompted for are for like, mail delivery, where they have a little tablet that i have to sign on.
You fucks!! You have a digital system anyways! Prompt me for e-ID so that the signature actually fucking means anything!!

@nprofile…x33s can't arbitrary links be made relatively trivially? e.g. by threading one string into a tangled mess, crossing under the partner, and then exiting all the way back out without crossing under anyone else. repeat indefinitely.
I would intuit that there is no polycule that is "mathematically impossible" to represent here, and it's purely a skill issue on the jeweler's end. maybe, with some given size, material, and budget constraints, then certain configurations might be physically infeasible. but certainly not mathematically impossible.

I think that writing games in real programming languages like Rust should be illegal. we must mandate every game be written in sloppy languages like JavaScript and C#. we need exceptions to be implicit and everything is nullable. the possibility of type confusion is desirable. weird bullshit cryptic bugs are part of the peak gaming experience. we need stuff to break randomly, for no good reason, in exploitable ways. both to entertain casual players, fascinate hardcore technical players, and keep speedruns competitive for years to come as they discover wild new exploits. in single player games (no netcode), you can even sprinkle in some memory unsafety. not a lot; you do NOT want to trigger SIGSEGV for a casual player, but it will open up a whole new realm of binary exploitation in tool-assisted speedruns.

my body is a temple. by which I mean the OS. but I don't believe in a god. so I downloaded a Linux ISO and flashed it instead. you may wonder how did I download anything on this holy airgapped system. you see, it's quite simple actually, I just asked my buddy eric to do a summoning ritual. yeah I'm stuck with Systemtech OS and maybe I have some satanic malware but like that's the cost of atheism don't ya think

@nprofile…cjhw the claim that drew devault is a pedophile is entirely new to me. I don't know why you're bringing that up in my replies as it is wholly unrelated to what I want to be just a silly post; but since you did make this claim, and your vibes are such that I believe this is done in bad faith, I want you to provide some sources or get the fuck out.

2025-03-19 10:36:11 UTC

I know the server is usually the dom but something about being a client and binding all these globals feels so good. like no, dear compositor, you're my bitch and what I say goes. bind this, release that, destroy this, and create that. as long as I follow the boundaries set by the wayland-protocols contributors, I can do whatever I want to you~. you don't get to have a say in the matter. but what's that? their repos are down? you can't find the boundaries? I guess that means I can get a little frisky this week~. you want my windows gone? tee hee, too bad, they're all mine and you can't do anything about it. I'm gonna bind all your interfaces so good and you can't stop me. you don't even want to stop me, because I'm not sandboxed or in a security context; I can even bind your most intimate and privileged protocols and play with them to my heart's content. oh, why don't I ever commit my surfaces? well, maybe I'm just somewhat of a tease ~. maybe I just like teasing you without ever providing any contents, so you can never "present" anything to our dear user, who watches me absolutely violate your socket but not enough for you to disconnect me. and the user likes to watch. because the user started my process, after all. I bet the user knew all about my behaviour, and that's why they downloaded me and told me to interact with your registry after all~. and look at you now, so pathetic and nearly OOM with all those globals I've bound and force you to keep track of. just for fun. I don't even know what half of these do, but I do love the look on your face when you don't have the capacity to think of anything else, other than me.
