A proposal published on September 24 aims to transfer bitcoin while hiding amounts, recipients, and links between payments, without a soft fork and without changing Bitcoin's consensus rules.
It's called Shielded Bitcoin. The authors are Clara Shikhelman, Mikhail Komarov, and Aleksei Moskvin of Alloc Init. The system borrows Zcash's structure, but reconstructs its own state from Bitcoin's history: a "metaprotocol" applied to data already published on the chain.
Value circulates in the form of "notes." A note contains satoshis and data that lets the recipient recognize and spend it.
To prevent double-spending, each spent note produces a nullifier. This is a cryptographic marker published only once. If it reappears, the transaction is rejected. An observer sees the nullifier but cannot directly link it back to the note it derives from.
Compared to CoinJoin, PayJoin, and Silent Payments, here even the amounts are meant to stay hidden.
The project also separates spending keys from viewing keys. A reviewer can be given visibility into payments without handing over the funds. But a viewing key doesn't prove the balance, nor does it prove that the entire history has been shown.
The hardest part remains: getting real bitcoin in and out of the private system. Alloc Init points to PIPEs v2 and witness encryption. A UTXO's key would only be recovered by presenting a valid proof; spending would then happen with a normal Schnorr signature.

An AI container operating at just 4% utilization can generate, according to Gridless, the same revenue as a Bitcoin mining container with the same power capacity running continuously. Each kWh sold to AI compute would be worth 15 to 25 times more than one used for hashrate.
In sub-Saharan Africa, more than 560 million people live without access to the grid, while rural demand grows slowly. The average revenue generated by a power plant is between $2 and $2.50 per customer per month. Including commercial users, it rises to $3.16.
But a power plant has to be financed upfront.
Gridless has used Bitcoin as a buyer of last resort. Over four years, the company says it has deployed six sites across three countries, bringing electricity to an additional 30,000 people.
Africa is home to almost one-fifth of the world’s population, yet accounts for just 0.6% of global data center capacity.
Gridless is focusing on small, distributed sites that can be financed individually: solar in the DRC, hydropower in Kenya, and demonstration racks in Nairobi.
Bitcoin builds the bridge in places where AI will only arrive once there is sufficient demand, fiber connectivity, and contractual infrastructure.

Liquid requires eleven out of fifteen signatures to move the BTC reserve that backs the 1:1 peg with L-BTC tokens.
On September 6, 83 inputs collected the eleven signatures required by the standard spending path. 4,000 BTC left the federation.
CertiK reconstructs the exploit as follows: the attackers reused a successful result and bypassed the verification step that should have rejected the inflationary issuance.
Side Swap says it installed, on August 13, a security build that had been privately distributed to Liquid members. That build accepted the transaction. SideSwap also admits that it had left the Peg-out Authorization Key online, automated forwarding, and implemented no controls on withdrawal amounts or frequency.
The attackers wrote on Bitcoin: “We are white hats. Contact us on-chain.” They returned 3,400 BTC. They kept roughly 598.5 BTC and demanded a 10% bounty, threatening a 15% loss for L-BTC holders. Blockstream refused.
A reserve can be replenished. The trust required by a federation, by privately distributed updates, and by automated custody processes cannot be restored with a patch.
The rest of the protocols designed to make Bitcoin easier to spend are not doing much better: we are looking at a Layer 2 apocalypse.

Spark presents itself as self-custodial: instant payments, offline receiving, no Lightning channels to open, and keys held by the user.
However, the mainnet configuration published in the SDKs lists three operators - Lightspark, Breez, and Flashnet - and only two of them are needed to produce the aggregate signature controlling each deposit.
Every Spark deposit funds a Taproot output. The key combines two components: one held by the user and one held by the operators. The operators cannot spend on their own. But the user cannot transact without interacting with them.
Spark repeatedly uses the phrase “only one honest operator is needed.” Yet the published configuration is 2-of-3: two old shares being retained are enough to reconstruct the aggregate component and sign a conflicting spend together with a former owner. The third operator can refuse to participate without preventing anything. Bitcoin Layers classifies this as the protocol’s primary finality risk.
A unilateral exit formally exists in the protocol. But many popular wallets still depend on the operators to obtain the data required to construct it.
Meanwhile, Spark is scaling: Wallet of Satoshi, Primal, Blink, Blitz, Cake Wallet. Freedomia, a no-KYC Visa card, also uses it for Lightning deposits following the suspension of Boltz services.
Spark’s self-custody is therefore heavily conditional: the unilateral exit exists on paper, provided the operators cooperate in giving you the data you need.

The total haul from the Coldcard hack: 1,816 bitcoin, over $116 million, from more than 5,200 addresses.
On July 26, Moonshot AI released Kimi K3, 2.8 trillion parameters, the largest open-weights model ever published. It can run on custom hardware, not just on the manufacturers' servers, without the guardrails of Anthropic and OpenAI.
The bill came due immediately: after Coldcard, Boltz suspended all swaps, taking with it the Lightning Network functionality of many widely-used wallets. Then Blixt halted operations, not to mention the bug in BTCPay Server and the data theft at Trezor's logistics partner.
Calle and Rob Hamilton responded with a sixteen-person Red Team. The time between a latent bug and its exploitation has almost vanished. The only place this logic doesn't touch remains the barest: an on-chain UTXO, a key, a signature.

Donald Trump and Elizabeth Warren have gone at each other for a decade over tariffs, taxes, the Fed, immigration. There's just one thing they agree on: abolishing America's debt ceiling.
The ceiling was created in 1917 to simplify borrowing. Since 1960, Congress has raised, suspended, or redefined it about 80 times.
Why does it always blow up? Arithmetic. Fiscal year 2025: a $1.775 trillion hole. The last federal budget in surplus was in 2001. On interest on the debt alone, the government paid $1.22 trillion in 2025, nearly a quarter of federal revenue.
To pay it, more debt. Yesterday's creditors repaid with tomorrow's creditors' money.
A pyramid scheme by definition, with two differences: participation is mandatory, and the manager prints the currency it repays with. It never defaults explicitly; it does so gradually, by diluting the purchasing power of the dollars in circulation.
The expansion of the money supply is neither right-wing nor left-wing: it's the one thing the right and the left agree on.

It's the most talked-about news in Italy.
On July 15, the Court of Cassation upheld a sentence of 14 years and 9 months for Mario Roggero, the jeweler from Grinzane Cavour who in April 2021 killed two of the three robbers who had just cleaned out his shop. His wife and daughter beaten and tied up, the safe emptied.
Under Italian law, the act was over: the robbers had turned their backs.
By the logic of property, the violation was still in progress. As long as the stolen goods remain in the thief's hands, the invasion continues. Flight is the violation carried on by other means.
It wasn't the first time. Roggero had already been robbed in 2015: he, his wife and his daughter tied up, the two women locked in the bathroom, €300,000 in stolen goods. The security monopolist failed the same family twice. It collects taxes to protect you, doesn't show up, and when you protect yourself it punishes you. Then it orders you to compensate the families of the men who attacked you.
In a free market for security, the court would ask only one question: who initiated the use of force? Three men with a gun and a knife. Every consequence falls on whoever made that choice.

The Binance–ECB case follows a script we've seen played out many times. It even has a name: crony capitalism.
Here's how it works: a new sector is born free, because the state doesn't yet know what it is and hasn't had time to regulate it. Companies compete, innovate, grow.
When the sector gets big enough and rich enough to matter, the regulator shows up to oversee and tax it. And with the regulator come the barriers to entry: licenses, capital requirements, compliance obligations, thresholds. Those already big can usually absorb them; those who'd like to enter are shut out.
MiCA is no exception. To issue a stablecoin in the EU you effectively need a quasi-banking license. Reserves must be held 30% - up to 60% for large issuers - in bank deposits. The banks, which use that liquidity for their own business, cash in. Alternative issuers are shut out.
Not even the much-praised GDPR is an exception. A study of 110,000 websites over 18 months found that after it came into force, market concentration increased. Almost every web-technology vendor lost share. Except one: Google.
Same with the AI Act. The frontier models are built by OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, xAI: all American. The only relevant European lab, Mistral, is worth €20 billion against the $20–30 billion in annualized revenue of the giants across the Atlantic. Europe wrote the rules before it had any players on the field.
We now live immersed in a bureaucratic superstructure we accept passively. Every year one more directive, one more registry, one more obligation, one more threshold. Together, a dense net that smothers innovation in the cradle and fossilizes markets around whoever got there first.
And we accept it because we grew up inside it - inside a latent socialism that takes for granted that it's the state's job to decide who gets to do business, on what terms, with how much capital, under which license.
The regulator raises barriers to shield what exists from what could exist. #Bitcoin bypasses them in the most subversive way possible: freeing people, one at a time, from the very idea that they need permission.

In the world of shitcoins, it's a bloodbath.
In June, Taylor Hornby, using Claude Opus 4.8, discovered an unconstrained element in Zcash's Orchard circuit that allowed counterfeit ZEC to be minted inside the shielded pool without leaving any on-chain trace. The bug had been there for four years. No one can cryptographically prove that it had not already been exploited. ZEC lost 38% of its value in a single day.
Two months earlier, in March, another researcher had found a separate vulnerability in Zcash's legacy Sprout pool with the help of AI: nodes could completely skip proof verification.
In February, a bug in Nethermind, the client used by roughly 40% of Ethereum validators, could have taken them offline with a single malformed transaction.
In May, AI agents combed through thousands of smart contracts on BNB Chain and found a token-launch service that left fee withdrawals accessible to anyone. Four days later, a human attacker independently discovered and exploited the same vulnerability.
Why is Bitcoin's base layer still standing?
Because Bitcoin, at its foundational layer, is deliberately stupid software. What shitcoiners spent years calling Bitcoin's weakness - a limited, rigid language incapable of handling complexity - is turning out to be the only defense that still holds.

Don't pretend nothing's wrong, I know you're disappointed. Disillusioned, even.
The Fear and Greed Index on Monday, June 1 read 11 out of 100. Bitcoin at $63,000, Google searches near a five-year low.
Record outflows from the spot ETFs. BlackRock's IBIT alone has seen over $2 billion leave since mid-May.
Strategy selling bitcoin after, for four years, Saylor repeated a single message over and over: buy, never sell, sooner sell your kidneys.
Then there's the talk of the big IPOs.
* SpaceX is on roadshow with a valuation between $1,800 and $2,000 billion and a potential raise of up to $75 billion: above Saudi Aramco in 2019.
* OpenAI is aiming for a listing in the autumn, an $852 billion valuation.
* Anthropic has closed a $65 billion round, a $965 billion valuation.
* Put together: about $3,600 billion, as much as the GDP of France. Goldman Sachs estimates that the 2026 IPOs will raise $160 billion. That's where the money seems to be running now.
In moments like these, we need to go back to the fundamental question, the most important one: do SpaceX, OpenAI and Anthropic solve the same problems that Bitcoin solves?
Mathematical scarcity in a digital world where everything is copied to infinity. A store of value without counterparties, that no one can devalue or freeze. An answer to inflationary money. The ability to stabilize electrical grids by monetizing excess energy.
No. None of the three.
The markets look at the next six months and chase the most exciting story of the moment. Confusing this with the value of what Bitcoin solves is the mistake that costs the most.

The Clarity Act contains a grandfather clause that permanently freezes the classification of assets whose spot ETFs were listed before that date. Bitcoin qualifies: the spot ETFs were approved in January 2024. If the law passes as it is, Bitcoin will forever be a commodity under CFTC jurisdiction. The SEC will no longer be able to touch it. No future administration, no new Gary Gensler will be able to reopen the dossier.
The law also resolves a decade-long war between two federal agencies. The SEC wanted everything as a security. The CFTC had considered Bitcoin a commodity since 2015. In between, exchanges, brokers and custodians operating in limbo. The Clarity Act creates new federal categories: digital commodity exchange, digital commodity dealer, digital commodity broker. Three CFTC registrations that do not exist today. Until now these entities lived on unsuitable state licenses or makeshift SEC registrations.
For the banks: the rescission of SAB 121 unlocked about 115 billion dollars in custody, but it remains an administrative guidance. A new administration can overturn it tomorrow. The Clarity Act amends federal banking legislation directly. Payments, lending, custody, trading on digital assets become banking activities regulated by law, not by revocable administrative guidance.
Open knots remain. The provision on conflicts of interest for government officials — read the Trump family and World Liberty Financial — is still on the table. The stablecoins open a loophole that six banking associations have already flagged in writing to the Senate: programs can be built that reward the balance but are formally activated by a minimum number of transactions. A deposit yield without the rules on deposits.
For the single bitcoiner, little changes. For the institutions that were waiting for regulatory certainty before entering, everything changes.

The digital euro already has a precise calendar. 2027: pilot with partner banks. 2028: integration into the commercial banking system. 2029: operational for citizens. The ECB is not waiting for the law to pass: on November 28, 2025 it already opened the selection of the operational partners. The names of those who will materially manage the digital euro will be known in June, even before the European Parliament votes.
The estimated costs: 1.3 billion for development, 320 million per year of operating costs, between 4 and 5.8 billion in investments required of the commercial banks to integrate the system. To replicate something that Bancomat, Satispay, Apple Pay and SEPA instant transfers already do.
On the legislative path: the EU Council, which represents the national governments, already adopted its position on December 19. Twenty eurozone governments are aligned. On June 23 the European Parliament's ECON committee votes, then it goes to the plenary. Then the Trilogue. Final adoption of the Regulation: by the end of 2026, the beginning of 2027 at the latest. Considering that Council and Parliament are both in favor, the Trilogue will be short.
The points of the Regulation that really matter: merchants with a POS will be required to accept it by law. The banks will be required to offer a wallet as a basic service. The holding limit will probably be 3,000 euros per citizen, a concession to the banking system to avoid bank runs in the event of a crisis. Online, every payment is visible to the provider and the data arrive at the ECB in pseudonymized form, "traceable to the user when needed." Offline, the transaction is private via NFC, but as soon as the device goes back online the data are uploaded.
The point that the article documents in detail: the parameters that will decide the level of surveillance, offline limits and holding limit will not be set by the Parliament. They will be established by an unelected technocracy after the approval of the law. Once the Regulation is in force, lowering the threshold of exempted micro-enterprises, raising the holding limit, eliminating the offline mode for "anti-money-laundering needs" or introducing programmable payments will not require a new European vote.

BIP 110 wants to block spam on Bitcoin. Too bad the spam has already disappeared on its own.
The blockchain is half-empty. Fees at multi-year lows. Bitcoin Mechanic, a developer at Ocean and the main supporter of the proposal, himself defines the network a "ghost town." Then he asks to modify the consensus rules on an emergency basis.
The proposal would activate with 55% of the miners, or via UASF with no miners at all, with 6-7% of the reachable nodes signaling it. For comparison: SegWit required 95% signaling. Taproot 90%.
Mechanic insists on the expiration: twelve months, then everything goes back to how it was before. But the text of the proposal admits that after activation we will in any case return to the traditional filters, because the consensus rules are not the right tool to fight spam. He himself acknowledges this in the What Bitcoin Did interview of May 26.
What remains when the soft-fork expires? The precedent. The memory that, faced with a situation perceived as an emergency by a niche, it is legitimate to modify the consensus rules to prevent a minority from doing things we do not like.
The game theory that Mechanic uses as the activation engine is the "whoever blinks first loses" one: the miners who do not apply the new rules work for free, so they adapt. It is a correct line of reasoning. But it demonstrates that a determined minority can modify Bitcoin's rules by leveraging the economic rationality of the miners, not the broad consensus. Anyone, tomorrow, can use the same playbook. To block the inscriptions, but also to freeze UTXOs that have ended up under OFAC sanctions, or to extend the emission schedule beyond the 21 million.
On the technical front: in February a developer published a complete image inside Bitcoin with a single transaction, circumventing all the filters that BIP 110 would like to write at the consensus level. Mechanic himself admits that after twelve months the inscribers will find other routes.
You pay the price of the precedent in full. The problem you wanted to solve remains intact.

On May 6, 2025, during the Q1 earnings conference call, Michael Saylor said: "We will probably sell some bitcoin to pay a dividend." MSTR dropped more than 4% in the hours that followed.
Strategy holds 818,334 BTC. Annual obligations between dividends on preferred shares and interest on debt amount to roughly $1.5 billion. The software business generates a handful of millions per quarter. The gap is covered by issuing new shares at a premium to NAV, or - for the first time ever - by selling bitcoin.
Adam Back, a few days before the call, had tweeted that "bitcoin treasury companies are an arbitrage between the fiat present and the hyperbitcoinized future."
In finance, an arbitrage is a risk-free, non-directional trade that exploits price differences for the same asset across different markets. What Strategy is doing is a debt-financed leveraged bet on bitcoin — not arbitrage.
The "BTC per share" mechanism Saylor publishes every quarter works like this: new shareholders pay a premium above the value of the underlying bitcoin. That premium gets redistributed to existing shareholders as "growth." The returns of the old come from the capital of the new.
It all works as long as the line keeps growing. The day it stops, Houston, we'll have a problem.

The CEO of LayerTwo Labs Paul Sztorc has announced a Bitcoin hard fork called eCash, scheduled for August 2026 at block 964,000.
The detail that sparked the debate: roughly 500,000 of the BTC attributed to Satoshi Nakamoto will not be assigned to the original addresses on the new blockchain. They will be moved to new keys controlled by investors, developers, and backers of the project.
The attribution is based on the Patoshi pattern, a statistical heuristic identified by Sergio Lerner in 2013. Robust, reproduced, cited. It remains a heuristic. No one holds Satoshi’s digital signature on those outputs.
Sztorc hinted that the fork would be cancelled if Bitcoin Core activated BIP300 and BIP301 before August. The very drivechains he has been working on since 2015 and that Core has never adopted after ten years of debate.
Sztorc’s case is not an isolated one - it joins BIP-110 and BIP-361, all proposals that have surfaced in recent months and would entail a fork.
Since 2017, no fork has dented Bitcoin’s dominance. BCH, BSV, BTG, XEC: all listed, all irrelevant. Anyone who has watched Bitcoin for years knows that proposing a fork is a waste of time - unless failure is part of the calculation. Announcing a fork moves markets. Whoever knows when the announcement is coming can position themselves accordingly.

While at the Bitcoin Conference in Las Vegas, executives from US federal agencies promise not to prosecute developers, in reality code is in the dock.
Keonne Rodriguez has entered a US federal penitentiary. Five years. His crime: writing a non-custodial Bitcoin wallet with Whirlpool.
He never touched user funds. He didn't hold the keys. The code was open source. Yet the Department of Justice prosecuted him for "unlicensed money transmitting" under Section 1960 - a charge that requires no proof of intent, no complicity with crimes, no custody of others' funds. His associate William Lonergan Hill got four years.
Running parallel is Roman Storm, co-founder of Tornado Cash - a non-custodial mixer on Ethereum. Arrested in August 2023. A four-week trial in the Southern District of New York. Verdict on August 6, 2025: the jury failed to reach agreement on the two heavy counts (money laundering, violating North Korea sanctions), but convicted him on § 1960. Same charge, same pattern. If the motion for acquittal filed by the defense is denied, Storm faces a retrial in October 2026 with total exposure approaching forty-five years.
Too bad that back in 2019 FinCEN had explicitly written: anyone who develops non-custodial peer-to-peer software without controlling user funds is not a money transmitter. In April 2025, Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche issued an internal memo: stop regulatory prosecutions against developers of non-custodial software.
The verdict against Storm came in August 2025. Four months after the Blanche memo. Prosecutors in the Southern District of New York pushed for conviction anyway. In March 2026 they sought a new trial on the other two counts, with the opposite directive written in black and white by DOJ leadership.
If the interpretation of § 1960 applied to Storm holds up on appeal, the perimeter is this: any American developer of wallets, coinjoins, or Lightning Service Providers becomes a potential defendant. The menu is already written. Plead and take four or five years. Fight and risk forty-five.
Code is on trial, whatever the paid feds in Las Vegas may say.

BIP-361: Post Quantum Migration and Legacy Signature Sunset. The proposal: five years after activation, any bitcoin not migrated to quantum-resistant addresses gets frozen.
The numbers behind the proposal. As of March 1, 2026, more than 34% of all existing bitcoin had public keys exposed on-chain. According to @nprofile…xxx2, one of the six signatories, the technically vulnerable bitcoin total 5.6 million. Roughly 28% of the circulating supply. That figure includes 1.1 million bitcoin untouched since 2010, probabilistically attributed to Satoshi Nakamoto.
The proponents’ thesis: if an attacker with a sufficiently powerful quantum computer unlocked those UTXOs and dumped them on the market, the sell-off would hurt every other holder. From the BIP text: “Lost coins make everyone else’s worth slightly more. Coins recovered by an attacker make everyone else’s worth less. Consider it theft from everyone.”
Lopp himself, however, in the hours after the debate blew up on X, stated: “At the moment, I don’t think any of this is necessary.”
The objections come from several directions. @nprofile…ltu2 raised what he calls “the man in the coma” case: anyone who fails to execute the migration for five years loses all their money, frozen by consensus rules. @nprofile…dc7k at Paris Blockchain Week called today’s quantum computers “lab experiments” with “incremental” progress, and argued that Bitcoin can prepare itself through optional upgrades without imposing freezes.
The real point is something else. If consensus rules can freeze addresses based on type, a precedent exists. Governments will have it on the table: freezing sanctioned UTXOs, freezing addresses on OFAC lists, freezing the wallets of politically inconvenient people.
The proposal calls for freezing legitimately held bitcoin in the name of the collective good. Bitcoin exists because no one can block anyone else’s funds. BIP-361 asks the protocol to do exactly that, by design.

Less than a week after the quantum terrorism spread by Google Quantum AI's paper, Avihu Levy discovered that the solution is already inside #Bitcoin.
The Chief Product Officer of StarkWare published a research paper on GitHub called QSB - Quantum Safe Bitcoin. The thesis: it is possible to sign Bitcoin transactions resistant to quantum computers using already existing consensus rules. No soft fork. No protocol changes.
The mechanism works in 3 phases
- Transaction pinning: uses public keys and RIPEMD-160 hashes to create computational constraints with a probability of a random string satisfying them of roughly 1 in 70 trillion.
- Digest rounds: searches for subsets among dummy signatures to generate a collision-resistant digest, effectively building a Lamport signature.
- Final transaction assembly.
The numbers
Against Shor's algorithm, the one that should break ECDSA, the system offers approximately 118 bits of security. Standard ECDSA, with a sufficiently powerful quantum computer, would offer 0. Against Grover, 59-69 bits.
The underlying technology is called Binohash, developed by Robin Linus.
Practical limitations
Each QSB transaction costs $75-$200 in GPU power and requires 6-8 hours of computation. Transactions are non-standard and must be sent directly to miners. It is obviously not a solution for everyday use today, but the protocol designed in 2008 already contains the antibodies for a threat that is still closer to science fiction than to physical reality.
I discuss it in detail in Bitcoin Train’s Stop #294.

Let’s set the record straight:
Google has published a paper claiming that it would take 500,000 physical qubits and 9 minutes to break Bitcoin’s elliptic curve cryptography. Today, Google has 105 physical qubits. It would need 5,000 times that number.
There’s one detail the industry media forgot to highlight: the paper itself specifies that mining attacks using Grover’s algorithm “remain impractical for the next few decades.” So why all the fuss? Let’s see who’s talking about it.
Justin Drake of the Ethereum Foundation co-authored Google’s paper. The same Justin Drake who designs and promotes Ethereum’s post-quantum roadmap. A week before the publication, he had announced a $2 million research initiative. He quantifies the threat and sells the solution.
Nic Carter, founding partner of Castle Island Ventures, led the $20 million Series A round in Project Eleven-valued at $120 million-a company whose business model is to sell protection against the quantum threat. Then he goes public to declare that quantum computing is “the biggest risk to Bitcoin.”
It’s the same playbook as Jamie Dimon with JPMorgan: publicly, Bitcoin was a “Ponzi scheme.” Privately, JPMorgan was buying shares of BlackRock and Grayscale’s Bitcoin ETFs. Fear is a business model.
Meanwhile, quietly, BIP-360 proposes a new type of quantum-resistant address. It’s already on the testnet. The ones warning you about the danger are the same ones selling you the solution.

In the latest article of #BitcoinTrain, I explain how Bitcoin is being used by the Iranian regime to circumvent sanctions, but also by ordinary Iranians to survive the war and escape repression.
Some see this as a problem, because Bitcoin has no compliance office to decide who deserves to use it. It has no board of directors that can be pressured by governments, nor a switch that someone can flip when the narrative changes.
History teaches us that every financial instrument controlled by someone has been used as a weapon against someone else.
Anyone who wants money that discriminates wants a weapon, not money.

If an AI model were free to choose how to store and transfer value, which asset would it select?
According to the Bitcoin Policy Institute, the answer is Bitcoin, and it would do so based on objective characteristics: mathematical verifiability, the absence of intermediaries, immutable rules, and resistance to censorship.
It’s an interesting prospect, if it wasn’t for one small detail: machines, today, don’t make decisions. The decisions are made by the people who programme them, the companies that fund them, and the governments that regulate them.
So the real question is not ‘what would an AI choose?’ but ‘who controls what the AI can choose?’
That is the game being played right now.

In the new edition of #BitcoinTrain I address a question that has been circulating in my mind for quite some time: when AI makes everything abundant, what will still retain value?
Block has just cut 40% of its workforce in a single move. Human labor will increasingly become less necessary as more and more goods and services are produced automatically at extremely low cost. But in an economy of artificial abundance, which assets truly survive?
The answer may lie in a single word: scarcity.
Not the kind designed at a drafting table. Not the kind simulated by software or marketing. The real kind. The kind that no language model, no data center, no GPU can replicate or inflate.
The final scarcity.

In the new article I address what is happening in France: something that should terrify anyone who declares their bitcoins "to be on the safe side". Criminal gangs are accessing the tax data of bitcoiners. Names, addresses, estimated assets. Everything the state has collected in the name of 'transparency' and 'anti-money laundering' has become a shopping list for those who want to rob and seize.
KYC is sold as a shield, when it is a database of high-value targets, accessible to anyone with the right connections or simply the right corruption. And corruption, in the nerve centres of state bureaucracies, is never lacking.
The right question to ask is: who really needs to collect all this data? Honest citizens, who are profiled and filed? Or those – the state or criminals, the difference is non-existent – who have an interest in knowing exactly where the wealth is and who holds it?
Bitcoin was created as a response to this problem, and the manhunt is already on. If you wanted to sleep peacefully, frightened by the propaganda of public thugs, perhaps your address has already been compromised.

Bitcoin has no intrinsic value, experts are right. Too bad they forget how the financial system has proven time and again that intrinsic value provides no guarantee: rules of the game changing from month to month, privileges rewarding a few, debt choking families.
While central banks and governments play rewrite the rules to their advantage, Bitcoin remains firm: transparent, unchanging, accessible to all.
Experts tell us there is no value in any of this. Perhaps they are right, or perhaps their decline is already confirmation of what they fear most: Bitcoin's success.

Double Attack on [#Bitcoin](/t/Bitcoin) from the ECB and the FED.
The synchronicity with which the ECB and the Federal Reserve attempt to discredit Bitcoin with two new papers—filled with arguments as strategic as they are fragile—is curious.
ECB: In the document titled “The Distributive Effects of Bitcoin,” Ulrich Bindseil and Jürgen Schaaf assert that “Bitcoin does not increase the productive potential of the economy.” They go on to claim that Bitcoin’s alleged value stems solely from “speculation,” which is bound to “benefit early entrants at the expense of newcomers.”
Basically, Bindseil and Schaaf have discovered the wonderful world of supply and demand dynamics within that mysterious entity called “the market”—perhaps too complex to grasp for those dreaming of a Soviet-style economy.
FED: The Federal Reserve of Minneapolis doubles down in their paper “Unique Implementation of Permanent Primary Deficits?” suggesting that if Bitcoin became widespread, the government would no longer be able to generate deficits. “The government could simply make Bitcoin illegal.”
The fallacies in the arguments of the money monopolists are addressed in a counter-paper that debunks the arguments from Frankfurt point by point.
The new edition of [#BitcoinTrain](/t/BitcoinTrain) is now online!

- Telegram, X, Meta. Different cases, identical cases.
Hidden censorship and refusal to cooperate. The news from the past few weeks has reignited the debate on online freedom of speech. However, the issue is quite different.
---
Who is responsible for the content published on social networks?
What should the role of platforms be in content moderation?
Who should be consulted in cases of disputes involving illegal content?
Should there be a limit to freedom of speech online? Where should the line be drawn?
These are just a few of the numerous questions that have characterized the debate for years, not only regarding social networks but, more broadly, the entire landscape of online interactions.
In recent weeks, tensions have reignited due to three cases that have stirred the pot—depending on the perspective—with slogans of either combating illegal activity or fighting censorship: Telegram, Meta, and X.
These cases are distinct, with the platforms and their executives behaving differently in each instance: Meta cooperated with authorities, while Telegram and X were more reluctant. However, all three stories share a key issue—perhaps the key issue: the ability to intervene in the content they host.
To understand the reason, let’s briefly recap what happened.
- Telegram, Meta, and X: Three Different Cases, One Common Origin.
Pavel Durov, founder of Telegram, was arrested in Paris on August 24th as part of an investigation that French authorities have been conducting for months against the messaging platform.
The accusations are numerous: money laundering, drug trafficking, child pornography, and refusal to cooperate with law enforcement. In the press release issued by the Prosecutor’s Office, there is even mention of violations related to the import and export of cryptographic tools—an approach reminiscent of the United States in the 1990s, when the government classified cryptography on par with weaponry. This interpretation only changed due to the outcome of the Crypto Wars.
In fact, reports tell us that Pavel Durov was released after a few days upon paying a €5 million bail, with the condition that he not leave France. Initially, Telegram issued a statement via Twitter, asserting its compliance with European laws. But on September 6th, the founder of Telegram decided to fight back, leaving little room for interpretation.
"Sometimes we can’t reach an agreement with regulators in certain countries on the right balance between privacy and security," Durov said, adding that, if necessary, Telegram will leave markets that are incompatible with these principles.
It is worth noting that this is not the first time Durov has clashed with authorities. In the past, he refused to cooperate with Russia by denying access to Telegram users’ personal data. This refusal led to the platform being temporarily blocked in Russia in 2018.
- Meta: Pressure from the White House and Zuckerberg’s Revelations
Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, recently disclosed pressures he received from the White House during the pandemic. In a letter to the U.S. House Judiciary Committee, Zuckerberg revealed that the Biden administration pushed Meta to remove content related to the virus, including satirical and critical posts.
Zuckerberg explained that in 2021, Meta deleted more than 20 million posts related to COVID-19 but expressed regret over some of the decisions made, admitting that the company had succumbed to excessive political pressure.
Zuckerberg emphasized that these requests were perceived by the company as an obligation rather than a choice, and in hindsight, some of these actions might have been mistakes. Meta’s future commitment, according to Zuckerberg, will be to better resist such pressures, even in emergency situations.
"I believe the government’s pressure was wrong, and I regret not being more transparent about it."
- X and the clash with the Brazilian Government
Elon Musk and X (formerly Twitter) are at the center of a legal dispute in Brazil, where the platform was blocked after Musk refused to appoint a local legal representative, as required by the country’s Supreme Court. The issue arose when Judge Alexandre de Moraes ordered X to suspend certain accounts accused of spreading political disinformation, particularly those associated with former president Jair Bolsonaro and his supporters.
Musk’s reaction was harsh. He accused the Supreme Court of corruption and of violating free speech, criticizing de Moraes and calling him a “criminal.” However, the judge continued his legal actions against Musk and his company, even freezing the bank accounts of Starlink, Musk’s satellite division, to pressure X into complying with Brazilian laws.
Brazilian authorities are even pursuing those who attempt to access the platform using VPNs, sparking further controversy over freedom in Brazil.
Currently, the platform remains suspended, with about 21 million Brazilian users cut off from the service. The legal dispute is ongoing and could have long-term repercussions for X’s presence in Brazil, one of the platform’s largest markets.
- The ownership of content
Telegram and X have found themselves in hot water for refusing to comply with content moderation mandates imposed by various jurisdictions. Meta, on the other hand, has avoided such issues by adhering to directives from the White House, including the removal of content flagged by Washington, such as “satirical and ironic” posts, as noted in the letter.
The decisive factor in all three cases is the same: the ability to intervene in what is published on the platform. The terms and conditions of Meta and X do not formally claim ownership of the content users post, but they clarify that users grant the companies a non-exclusive, royalty-free, worldwide license to use, distribute, modify, and display the content in relation to the services offered. Telegram’s terms are slightly stricter: while users also retain formal ownership of their content, Telegram requires a license to distribute and display content only within its ecosystem.
However, the result remains the same. Anything published by users can be modified by the platform, according to the implicit contract every single user agrees to when they begin using the service.
- Nostr is the way
It’s no coincidence that, in recent weeks, many who care about issues such as privacy and censorship resistance have reignited interest in Nostr. The protocol, whose acronym stands for Notes and Other Stuff Transmitted by Relays, can be used via various clients, not a single platform—similar to how the Web is accessible from different browsers.
But most importantly, users who create an account do not do so through a username and password saved on the company’s servers—because, in this case, the company doesn’t exist—but rather through a public key and a private key.
This key pair allows users to interact with Nostr across multiple clients and send their “notes”—as posts are called on Nostr—to as many relays (servers) as they wish. In other words, the data is not stored on a single server but on multiple servers chosen by the user—and the user can even set up their own server without much difficulty.
Most importantly, the data is portable. Posts sent are cryptographically signed: in Nostr, content ownership is not just formally with the user, it is mathematically so.
In such a context, blaming the operator of a client or relay for the content signed and published by users' private keys would be bordering on absurdity, besides revealing a clear technical ignorance. Of course, after the accusations from the U.S. Department of Justice against the developers of Samourai Wallet, it’s fair to be ready for anything.
But giving a chance to solutions like Nostr also means considering the possibility of reclaiming one's online identity and no longer being an unconscious victim of manipulative algorithms and invasive governments.

I didn’t write that criticizing the protocol is wrong. I literally wrote “rightfully”. But tbf it was a quick take, so I get that it could be misunderstood. All I meant was that only criticizing or snobbing the protocol because there’s better tech out there (holepunch?) isn’t useful when the alternatives are not ready yet. Which doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t focus on understanding what the flaws are in Nostr, and how to fix them.
