Really love this analogy of a “ham biscuit sign” playfully used by @npub18vj…g4zy to describe how confusing user interfaces can be on the web. Consistency matters, and the web is missing a ton of it (date pickers and sign in forms come to mind). In the physical world I always get tripped up by debit / credit card readers when paying for something at a store; they always seem to behave slightly differently from one another and it often confuses me at least a little.

I've spent a lot of time learning about modern frontend web development tooling the past few weeks since my team moved multiple git repositories to a single shared mono repo. During this time I haven't asked an LLM chat once about how to do something. I've put time in reading documentation, asking questions to colleagues, and debugging things, and wow have I learned a lot. Makes me wonder how much less I would have learned if I had used an LLM.

2. At the same time that I agree with you on #1 China is still burning more coal than the *rest of the world combined*, which is *very very very* bad since coal accounts for 30% of all GHG emissions globally. We all need to get coal usage down to zero ASAP.
It seems like there is some cognitive dissonance for you, in holding two opposing things at once (minor lowering of GHG while still burning a fuck ton of coal). But 2 opposing things can be true at once. That is a reality.
Peace!

last thing I'll say since I don't want to continue to engage with someone who is disrespecting me, as it shows lack of having a "good faith" argument.
My point:
1. I agree that China being able to reduce its GHG is a great thing the world desperately needs and don't dispute the 1% decrease over 1 year that your original article reported. Your other articles have not shown more than that, only that China says it aims to reduce emissions (while failing to meet previous Paris goals)

I understand what you are claiming to say, as I’ve repeatedly said over and over. A 1% drop in emissions one year with growing renewables 😎 which is different from building new coal plants and burning down the planet with consuming 4k million tons of coal per year.

2 billion people means lower per capita no matter what you’re measuring, that’s cherry picking. Burning more coal than the rest of the planet combined is a pretty important fact to overlook.

it’s okay to be bad at math, I get it. Understanding that a 1% drop in total emissions for only one single year doesn’t amount to a meaningful reduction in the most coal consumption on the planet out of any country is hard to grok mathematically!

no article you linked to said China is not consuming more coal then the rest of the world combined and that coal does not account for 30% of all greenhouse gas emissions.
Why do you keep trying to put me down by saying things like “shit you consume” or “burgerland”? I’m not assaulting your character or your values, you are clearly triggered by inconvenient truths or something. It’s kinda weird bro!

even this article you originally cited states only a 1% decline in emissions over a 1year period that is tenuous given a number of factors, and could potentially rebound as has happened *multiple times* in China’s past. A graph you shared states 52% of energy production comes from coal. They are *still building* new coal power plants. They still consume more coal than *the rest of the world combined*! A 1% drop in emissions for 1year does not negate this.

I am not disputing any of that. I’m pointing out one fact about China’s coal usage which is still astronomical. Apparently this one small fact carries no credibility with y’all ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

cherry picking facts! Yay!

you can keep repeating the same talking points and so can I, we are clearly getting nowhere so this is pointless. Once again I’m not disputing any of what you’re saying (other than my point being invalid). I’m merely pointing out the currently insane amount of coal being burned, not contesting the cause of it, not the decline in it being burned, nor debating the global politics that led to it, etc; hence why I said it “feels” a *little* “greenwashy” to *me*.

awesome if they’re *starting* to reduce emissions, no problems with that, time will tell. In 2023 however China contributed to 30% of all emissions globally, a 300% increase from 1990. My “myopic” point isn’t about a clean energy transition, and it isn’t meaningless; if they’re out outputting that much coal emissions that’s fucking horrendous, a totally valid point on many levels. And I don’t say that to shift blame from the U.S.; it’s a simple fact. (Edited)

lol okay, 4k million metric tons isn’t any emissions at all, just a drop in the bucket!

feels a little green washy to me. China still dwarfs every other nation in coal usage (4k million metric tons), 4x more than India, its closest rival and about 8x more than the U.S.

Recently found out someone I know committed suicide. Didn’t think this person was suffering from any kind of mental health issue, they always came across as cheerful, glowing, and full of life. The only detail I know about why they did it was that they were very distraught about what’s happening in the world right now.
I know we’re all feeling the weight of the world right now and it can feel overwhelming, but please talk to others about it and know that you’re not alone.

The past few weeks at work I literally removed 250 lines of TypeScript and TSX in our production code by using the "C" in CSS. Cascade for the win!

It’s great that Wikipedia’s website has dark mode now but it would be even better if it remembered that you had that setting enabled instead of having to reenable it every time you visit the site.

People on StackOverflow telling people to screw up #accessibility with the HTML dialog element defeats the purpose of using that element in the first place IMO. Please upvote my answer that corrects the numerous wrong answers, including the accepted answer, to this question if you have an SO account.

Today I learned via @npub1thu…8zxf that if you didn’t think #Project2025 was bad enough there are ten whole pages (written by someone who is anti-bike lane!) on dismantling the Department of Transportation and essentially defunding public transit at the federal level. Their solution? Replace public transit with ride hailing services and other public private partnerships. For fucks sake.

Stating that websites should be only HTML and not have any CSS or JS is an ableist statement. That might be enough for you, but not everyone who uses the web. Yes there is too much JS bloat on the web. Yes there are too many #accessibility barriers on many if not most websites. Those two things don’t mean that CSS and/or JS are inherently evil or bad. They also ignore how writing CSS, JS, and yes even HTML thoughtfully and carefully can improve usability for everyone.

Seeing some discussions pop up around the benefits of simple websites, meaning mostly or only HTML. While I understand the sentiment, I think some people may not realize that:
1. default browser styles can impede #accessibility (eg low contrast focus indicators, lack of dark mode support, disabled buttons, etc)
2. CSS can improve a11y when used correctly
3. JavaScript can improve a11y when used minimally and correctly
4. some HTML elements have a11y & usability problems

I've been hearing that many prominent activists on the left are calling for people to not vote in this election because of Gaza. I find this to be extremely dangerous and misguided, resulting from the false equivalency that because one group of people are being murdered, that harm reduction for another group (or even multiple groups) of people shouldn't be addressed by voting because that means supporting what's happening in Gaza. Doesn't make any sense to me. Feels insane actually.

, no pressure to talk about this, but I assume you are someone who might be sitting the election out in November because of Gaza. I can empathize with not wanting to be part of the political apparatus that has enabled what's happened in Gaza. What I can't comprehend is the justification of the impact of people not voting because of this, e.g. the mass deportation of immigrants, further destruction of civil rights, death to lots of folks here. Does any of that concern you?

for Galloway it certainly seems that way, for the group as a whole I don't agree.
