Hey @nprofile…60xv -- there's a bug where if I have a progressive app set up but I also have a page from the same site open in the browser and I shift-click to open it in a new tab, the browser and all progressive app windows lock up and Vivaldi crashes.
Is there a proper place to report this?

@nprofile…gehf My take is that most of it is induced rage coming from fossil industry propaganda.
Perhaps the industry decided to pick on one thing at a time, to focus the ignorance available (much more limited in the EU than here in the US, where we are clearly the greatest at ignorance) on a single target -- or maybe as an experiment to see which one got more traction, so they could repeat that success in other countries.

At lunch, my dad mentioned "citation justice" as being this terrible thing that is now debasing academia.
Not having heard of it before, I said I was pretty sure there had to be more to it than that, and then managed to move to another topic.
Searching the webs, what I get is that it's a practice researchers are engaging in voluntarily in order to help improve diversity in the research community, possibly with the encouragement of some instututions, while the Right is of course framing it as valuing diversity over relevance, thereby lowering overall quality (basically the anti-DEI playbook again -- and here I thought they were against recycling).
RationalWiki doesn't seem to have anything about it yet.
Have I discovered a new trope-ical species? 🪱
If anyone has more information, please feel free to send links for me to munch on. (omnomnom)

Dear EU,
Do not sign any deals with the Tr💩mp administration. They cannot be trusted to carry out their end of any deal (or even understand what they're agreeing to).
Let them impose all the sanctions they want, cutting off their own noses to spite their faces. You're better off without them.
Things will change soon, one way or another, and whatever deal you make now will probably not reflect that reality.
Sincerely,
me

@nprofile…nmr0 I'd say it's not so much "being progressive" as "overtly accepting ideas that have only been acceptable in the mainstream for a generation or so (and can therefore be framed as progressive)".

@nprofile…nmr0 Maybe it's helpful if you think of it from the POV of how her behavior is hurting her -- like, you have some cognitive traction on a problem she's probably been dealing with for all her life but has no idea how to fix (and has probably abandoned any idea that it's fixable): maybe you can help make her life better!
Much depends, of course, on whether she is capable of introspection and constructive self-criticism.

@nprofile…nmr0 There's a song by Billy Joel which includes two lines I always found very affirming and healing:
I know you're an emotional girl
It took a lot for you to not lose your faith in this world
What I got from that is "it's okay to have strong feelings, to be sensitive -- there's a lot of messed-up stuff out there, so of course you're going to have a reaction to it".

@nprofile…nmr0 Thinking about it some more, this seems related to the style of argumentation in which one person says, in a calm and reasonable tone of voice, absolutely horrible and outrageous things. If the other person reacts appropriately (i.e. with anger or even just strongly-worded condemnation), they lose the argument because they're "having an emotional reaction" or whatever.
This allows horrible ideas to remain "on the table" for discussion, which is part of how fascism spreads.

@nprofile…nmr0 There's a pattern I've noticed in which multiple different entities -- a geographical area, that area's government, and that area's people -- are all spoken of as if they were the same thing.
e.g. if your government is doing something, then you as an individual under that government are doing it and supporting it -- even if you firmly opposed and voted against the people now in power and making the decision to do that thing.
The whole "you are a red-stater" thing feels a lot like that.
(Of course, I have the perspective advantage of being from a very blue area of what has been a very red state -- so I know from experience that not everyone in an area agrees with what that area's apparent zeitgeist. ...and more recently I've come to understand how disinformation and gerrymandering result in political decisions which are not actually in accordance with what most people in an area actually want.)

@nprofile…nmr0 I've often thought about how one might rationally deal with such people when they can actually tell you who makes their moral choices for them -- because then, at least in theory, you have someone with whom you can rationally discuss the matter.
The problem, of course, is that the "boss"'s motivations are not necessarily aligned with the best interests of his... moral subordinates?... or even with the interests of his group as a whole, but often have much more to do with maintaining and elevating his own standing within a larger hierarchy.
...but if you can determine that, then at least you know who needs to shift, and have some idea of what would motivate them to do so.

Something I thought of while typing that: I don't think it reduces empathy; I still feel rage at the people doing the war crimes and lying and all of that. It just becomes more of a cold, calculating rage. I still feel empathy for the suffering and death; it just becomes something I feel, not something that rolls over me like a tsunami and drowns me.

@nprofile…uhjq I read somewhere (one of Oliver Sacks's books, maybe?) about a woman who experienced music as something somewhere between shattering glass and fingernails on chalkboard. (It made me think of misophonia.)
The neurologist (must have been Sacks) did some tests aimed at finding where the problem happened, since her hearing was otherwise normal and she had no trouble with non-musical sound.
I don't remember the details, but my impression was that there was a very clear point where her brain decided a sound was musical and started shunting the audio input over to the music-processing part of her brain, which was broken in this very unpleasant way.
I have to think that there are other people who experience something like that, although perhaps not as severely.

An observation: #phpactor is nifty but also often inaccurate.
(in this case: claiming an imported interface is never used, when in fact it is used in an is_subclass_of() check about a dozen lines later. It's also grousing about a called method in a trait not being declared in that same trait... but that's the thing about traits: there's no syntax to say "this trait should only be used by class X" or "this trait implements interface Y"... and if you declare the method as abstract, PHP might scream "collision!" when you use the trait. ...or is that only for non-abstract methods? Anyway, it gets ambiguous for me, so I avoid doing that.)

...but I remember people in Rhode Island (which isn't that far north) sticking electric heaters under their hoods so the car would start quickly the next morning. (Maybe this isn't as much of a thing with electronic ignition? I was there from 1985-1989...)
...and I suspect that to the extent it's a problem, e-cars can be outfitted with battery-heaters which can be run off A/C mains so as not to drain the batteries while keeping them warm overnight.
Yet another non-problem which the established interests want everyone to believe is a show-stopper.

So, apparently now there's a thing that can run #PHP code in your browser, via #WASM.
I only know this because the examples in the PHP docs online (e.g.) can now be run in-browser, and modified -- and you can make modifications to the code and run it again.
That's actually kinda nifty.

@nprofile…cgs9 In general there needs to be more funding for public domain / open source / whateveryawannacallit software that's mainly of interest to people rather than corps.

@nprofile…q4cu ...and even if a simple drawing of a traffic light is somehow, in fact, actually a traffic light, there are still no squares that contain even a single traffic light -- much less more than one (as required by the plural form, "lights").
It's almost as if they're not checking for accurate image comprehension but instead checking for knowledge and acceptance of an unspoken received reality...

If they're going to design annoyingly stupid forms and processes, I think we should demand that those annoyingly stupid processes be at least somewhat creative and amusing.
Then we can chuckle wryly as they suck the life out of us, instead of just whimpering softly. What's not to like? 😅

As long as they don't ask for my firstborn and the pound of flesh closest to my heart, we can probably work something out.
I mean, you know -- one or the other. Demanding both is just crossing a line, you know? 🧐

A, It's not made of people.
(I don't know if this is actually funny or not. The "made of people" tie-in is probably too obvious to make the punchline surprising.)

rebelling against the system by only clicking on one square per [thing] when the [thing] goes across multiple squares and the instructions are "click on all squares that contain [thing]s"
Technically, though, I shouldn't click on any squares that have only one [thing] -- because tt said [thing]s, plural -- not "one or more [thing]s" -- but they seem to think I'll just blithely assume they actually mean "any squares that contain part of at least one [thing]", which is garbage.
What do they think I am, some kind of mindless robot?
