Electric cars are not good for the environment, they are just the least bad kind of car. Still bad.
We can't replace like for like with electric versions of things. There needs to be a transformational change.

All renewable source of energy still require a lot of fossil fuels to produce. There is no free lunch. We can't keep growing, even with renewables.

A more deeper issue with LLMs is energy usage. Anyone who has read Limits to Growth, and is paying attention to global warming has a lot to say here.
However, I personally don't think our trajectory is different with or without LLMs. Humans it turns out, consume all available resources given a technology. LLMs possibly are a bigger straw to suck the earth dry, but we already have some big straws.

Tim Bray is exactly right here. If Claude can impress Knuth, maybe people who don't know that should re-evaluate.
To me the danger in AI is who owns it. Like all powerful technologies, who owns and uses that power matters a lot. Nuclear is a great example. You can use it for power generation of WMDs.
Unfortunately a cabal of crazy people own LLM models, at least in the west.
Open Weight models are a force against this.

I don't think that analogy works with software. But if we take your analogy, if you had a machine that can lay bricks better than a bricklayer, or cut wood better than a carpenter should we not use them? Machines are great at precision. Where you want people is when you want variation and artistry.

Once Yegge mentioned Christopher Alexander it made sense to me. One thread I've been thinking of recently is if we can capture theory (as in Naur's Programming as Theory Building, which maybe Alexandrian patterns could to some approximation), the artifact (the code) is no longer that valuable or precious.

I was about to transfer my Abject project to Codeberg but can't now.
Codeberg seems to be more aligned with the OSS compared to the FL in FLOSS.

I've been writing software for 30 years and AI generated code doesn't scare me or upset me.
I always told people I can teach someone the mechanics of writing code in like 6 months and they will be amazing.
The hardest part of writing software is knowing what to build, for whom, to solve what problem.

I re-thought what and object oriented system could look like in the world of AI and came up with The Ask Portocol.
Would love to hear people's feedback. Also it's open source so you can contribute.

Getting off of oil is not just about climate, it's a mathematical inevitability.
At the projected growth rate of 0.65% per year of oil production, we have 39 years until it's gone. Even if we somehow find TWICE the oil we have ever found, that would give us 69 years (within a child's lifetime)
We cannot grow our economy on oil, it's just not possible. Oil age is over.

There is a lot of truth to this. I always felt there was a lot of similarly. However the MAGA crowd is much farther to the right. I don't think even Putin would let oligarchs come in and start cutting everything.

Not everything that is new is better.
The idea of illegal immigration is new. Prior to WWI, Passports were not a thing. For most of human history, people could travel and work freely across borders..
Closed borders are a recent experiment in human history. It's hard to argue because everyone alive can't imagine what a world like that looked like and it feels 'natural' that we have closed borders. It's not natural. I would argue makes a less free world.
