Iraq is represented by Dibis w'rashi (tahini and date syrup dip) with unyeasted date rounds. I had not made date syrup before and I don’t think I appreciated the volume I was making by starting with 5.5lbs of dates. Date syrup produces both the syrup and date mash. Four cups of date mash went into the rounds (delicious, reminds me of a kind of breakfast round you can buy here but much better), I made a batch of millionaire bars with some (or rather a riff on millionaire bars, with an almond flour butter cookie base, the date mash instead of caramel, topped with chocolate), and I still have 8 cups of mash left over. All currently portioned out in the freezer for more millionaire bars. This was so simple and lovely. Like a very elegant PB & J. Huge batch, many leftovers. Gorgeous reheated!

Came home from the market to find hundreds of little flies coming out from one of the sansevieria. Ugh. After being banished to the backyard while the flies were cleaned up, the plants are now enjoying a bubble bath to eliminate any other bugs. Not sure exactly what the bugs are (maybe gnats?) or where they came from (I repotted this plant over the summer, new soil, and they were outside for a shower a few weeks ago?) but I am hoping that they have not spread. All nearby plants' soils are covered in cinnamon. Cross your fingers and toes!

I have missed walking on rock gardens in parks as there are none here. Creating a giant concrete slab and making my own wasn't future proof as it would be a transportation nightmare. Behold the alternative, a woven basket filled with stones. I have tried with trays but hard to move. I think this is my most successful attempt. Much smaller than a rock garden, feels lovely, and easy to pick up and transport.

Easing back into another training block, week one done. Felt good to get out with the pup today. The wind was intense - pup was in aerodynamic seal mode out front.
My watch is punking me - it's been telling me I have been peaking all week (after last Saturday's 60KM). Legs feel good though and I have been running easy this week.
All the fall running clothes got dug out of storage and washed this weekend - not a moment too soon. Fall running is here!

A cosy start to the day. Coffee and snuggles. All you need is a dog! And coffee!
Back to running yesterday and pup was pleased to get out for a lap of the neighbourhood together. She had some big feelings about me being gone all day running on Saturday and leaving her home with the rest of her pack. She's happy to be back to the normal routine of being in constant contact! Or at least attached by the umbilical cord (leash!). I don't mind the company. 😍

I have long believed that running is a teacher. Today's lesson, run the klick you're in. Today started out perfectly. I slept (a miracle before a race), morning routine was seamless, I felt great, weather was stunning, nutrition was great. How much energy do you think I spent on waiting for the other shoe to drop? But why would I waste a perfect morning worrying about what problems could pop up!?! Like a meditation, "Just be here," I repeated again, and again, and again. It took some convincing but I was able to savour a practically perfect first 35km! Of course the other shoe dropped, inevitable in both running and life, and I spent 10km waiting to come across a bathroom. But I didn't waste that beautiful start and got to enjoy these lovely flowers. I am learning, slowly, to enjoy when things go well. It also saved energy for when I finally found a bathroom, I was able to bounce back faster and enjoy the last 15km. Grateful to running for providing me with opportunities to practice mindfulness and joy.
Also, the person who made the decision to remove the portapotties on the trail, do better.

Although starting this morning in a toque and jacket was a bit jarring. 6C!!! The leaves are just starting to change. I saw "my" hawk (who I usually see in my laps of the farm), two turkey vultures (it seems late for them), and a snake! Beautiful day!

My (Hungarian) uncle sent me pictures of recipes from one of his Hungarian cookbooks but I don't know the name of the book. I've copied the recipe below. I did variation II with making the roux first. STUFFED CABBAGE, BASIC RECIPE
T'öltött káposzta
¼ cup uncooked rice
I pound lean pork, ground ½ pound lean beef, ground 2 garlic cloves, mashed
2 medium-sized onions, chopped fine
I egg
I tablespoon salt
½ teaspoon black pepper
I head of fresh cabbage (see
Note)
2 pounds sauerkraut (see Note)
½ cup tomato juice
½ pound smoked pork butt,
sliced
2 tablespoons lard
2 tablespoons flour
½ cup sour cream
6 t0 I2 servings
2 tablespoons paprika
I. Cook rice in ½ cup water for 10 minutes. Drain.
2. Thoroughly mix the ground pork and beef with garlic, half of the onion, the egg, salt, pepper, i tablespoon of the paprika and the drained rice.
Put stuffing mixture aside.
1 Core the cabbage and cook the cabbage head in enough water to cover it for 1o to I5 minutes.
2 Gently take apart the cabbage, leaf by leaf. Cut out heavy veins if any.
3 Use a large oval casserole, about 6 inches high, 16 inches long and 8 to Io inches wide, or a round one of similar size. Put sauerkraut in the casserole with tomato juice and sliced pork butt in enough water to cover. Bring to a boil, then lower heat and cook for s minutes.
4 Fill cabbage leaves with the stuffing mixture; with well-floured hands form rolls. Do not make the rolls too tight, for the stuffing will expand in cooking. Pinch the ends of the rolls together to seal them. (Leftover stuffing can be made into meatballs.) Cut remaining cabbage leaves into fine shreds and add to the casserole.
5 1 Make room in the sauerkraut with a wooden spoon, and place the cabbage rolls in it. Cook covered over very low heat for I hour.
6 Meantime, make a roux out of hot lard, flour and remaining chopped onion. Cook it for about to minutes, until golden yellow. Turn off heat, stir in I tablespoon paprika, and whip it up with I cup cold water.
7 Very gently remove the stuffed cabbage rolls from the casserole. Take out a ladleful of sauerkraut broth and whip it into the roux. Return this liquid thickening to main casserole, stirring it well. Bring to a boil.
8 IO. Put back the stuffed cabbage leaves, cover the casserole, and finish in a
9 350°F. oven for 15 minutes.
10 II. Before serving, pour sour cream over the casserole, making sure not to break cabbage leaves.
11 • NoTE: T'his basic recipe uses a fresh cubbage bead, since the United States housewife will not be able to find whole sour cabbage heads, except possibly in New York's Lower East Side.
12 If you must use canned sauerkraut, always remember to eliminate its cook. ing time from these recipes, since canned sauerkraut is already cooked.
13 VARIATIONS:
14 I. Fry I chopped onion in ¼ pound diced bacon for s minutes. Sprinkle with a pinch of marjoram, then proceed to mix with other stuffing ingredi ents.
15 II. Start with roux; add sauerkraut, and slowly cook it for Is minutes.
16 Proceed preparing the stuffed leaves and cook as directed above.
17 IlI. Fry I chopped onion in I tablespoon lard for 5 minutes. Add sauer-kraut, I tablespoon paprika and the stuffed leaves. When cooked, mix sauerkraut with sour-cream and flour mixture.
18 IV. In Transylvania they often add a handful of fresh dill and a glass of white wine in addition to the usual ingredients.
19 V. Hajdukáposzta
20 Use I pound ground pork; I chopped small onion, fried; I tablespoon paprika; I tablespoon minced fresh marjoram; 1 egg and some salt for stuff-ing. Fill sour cabbage leaves.
21 Fry another chopped small onion in 3 tablespoons lard; add I pound sauerkraut and the stuffed leaves. Add enough water to cover.
22 Top with I pound meaty smoked slab bacon and I pound smoked Debrecen sausage and possibly a smoked rack of pork, Sprinkle with sour cream when serving. The important ingredients here are the Debrecen sausage and the smoked meats.

Iceland is represented by Vínarbrauð (Viennese bread). These are delicious and illustrative of the challenge of finding recipes that are both “authentic” (however problematic that phrase is) and tested. So many recipes are clearly written by lovely folks, dear to my own heart, who eye-ball amounts, who cook by feel. However, this is chaos when you are cooking a dish for the first time and don’t know the feel. For example, “roll into rectangles 10cm wide” but no indication of thickness, length, or how many the recipe should make! Of course, if you made these every Sunday, you’d know these things. They were not, however, included in the recipe. This adventure has reinforced my appreciation for cookbooks and the style of writing that includes such details. That said, these were amazing rocket fuel for my long run on Sunday and I have an incredible supply of them!

Thanks! It was a really beautiful run while it lasted. I am enjoying the unofficial and unsupported ultras. I have to carry more or be creative with my routes to create "aid stations" but that's part of the fun. More accessible with respect to being scent free/covid safe, cheaper, and local!

2026-05-30 20:26:22 UTC

A beautiful 52km unofficial, unsupported urban ultra. Stunning day, beautiful weather. Ottawa is very pretty in the spring. A mix of multi use pathways, trails, and sidewalks. I saw a house martin, and other swallows galore, cormorants, turkey vultures, ducklings, and goslings (who I gave a wide berth to)! Stunning day to be outside. I had planned on a longer run but my period and all its fun kicked off 41km in and after another ten km or so, I had enough. I did love this training plan though! I have a few side quests in mind for the immediate future but I think I will go back to this plan later in the summer.
Also, it's World Mask Week! My kn95 that I carry for popping into stores or portapotties on my run colour coordinates with my running vest! PPE but make it sporty!

Thank you! I love that print too! I am glad that the local IKEA has a fabric selection.

A double offering for #MeMadeMay - two makes from the past year! The Moss Jacket is made with Ikea fabric. It was the first time making this pattern, it's okay, but I need to adjust the shoulders and arms if I make it again. I am not in love with the bell sleeves but I really like the collar. The second jacket is made with #SecondHand denim and bias binding I made myself. It's from a discontinued pattern from Helen's Closet that I have modified with shortened sleeves. I have made a calf-length version of this pattern in teal corduroy (which I love!). On this one, I did enclosed seams on the yoke! They look so clean! Bias binding along the cuffs/bottom. I really like this! I have another jacket project in the pipeline but I would make this again in a lighter fabric as an alternative to a cardigan. I like a lot of space around my shoulders and this makes me happy. I also like shorter (bracelet) sleeves. I also love the collar although it was difficult to get right.

Hopping back into #MeMadeMay with a #YorkPinafore This is one of my favourite patterns. I have made three Yorks true to pattern and two with modifications. This one is in #SecondHand green denim with Frenched seams and finished with cotton bias binding on the arms and neck. York pinafores are very forgiving of body changes over time and they have fantastic pockets. They work for every season and need less washing due to wearing them as an outer layer that doesn't touch your armpits. I love them! Pup only cares about their coziness when snuggled behind me for work! They pass that test too!

Another cosy make for #MeMadeMay
This is a self-drafted skirt made in a cotton jersey. Fold down waist and double layers so it's cosy and warm. Worn with a second hand sweater and store bought t-shirt. I absolutely adore this sweater and I have a pattern for 'The Weekender' which I think would be almost identical. However, my knitting hasn't progressed that far yet - to be able to read and understand the pattern instructions as well as follow them still seems an ambitious goal. One day!

Post work selfie with the pup in a York Pinafore. The York was one of my first patterns and introduced me to French seams and bias binding (two great loves). This was the second version in a heavy knit cotton blanket from the as-is section of IKEA. So cosy! The scarf was a more recent make in cotton yarn that the pup provided moral support for. I have a soft spot for all pinafores. Easy to layer which works for all seasons. This is made with a second hand linen and finished with cotton bias binding. I love how roomy this make is. Perfect for being comfortable at work. I have a #NoHardPants at work policy! My favourite part of this is that the neck hole, arm holes, and hem are all finished with bias binding that I made myself. Hopping into Me Made May with a little knitting. Slowly working on this blanket when I watch English-language shows. Pup provides moral support. I cast on entirely too many stitches when I started so it far exceeds the size of the circular needles and sits like a ruffle while I knit.
