I finally wrapped up my custom mini #cyberdeck build last night. Uses a #waveshare ESP32-S3 touchscreen and a mini "OS" built using #circuitpython I wrote a blog post about the build (including links to download the #3dprint models and code) https://andywarburton.co.uk/post/gr3ml1n-a-compact-handheld-cyberdeck-built-for-chaos

Wrapped up my latest custom #keyboard today. It’s a single handed keeb designed exclusively for playing #ArcRaiders . Designed in TinkerCad and #3dprinted on my #Prusa mk4. Then hand painted with Panduro Hobby Acrylics and dusted with weathering powders. Running #kmk on a #seeed Xiao #rp2040.

#hacking an old mouse into a #trackball because why not. Already removed the wheel and switches. Will replace them with keyboard switches and mount them off to the side somewhere. Need to figure out a home for the scroll wheel too. Might try and convert it into a horizontal dial instead.

I think it’s probably time to move off Mastodon.social and onto a more niche instance. Does anyone have suggestions for a nerdy #maker #electronics type instance I could call home?

Do you think at some point in the near future you will be able to buy off the shelf #AI servers for home use that deploy as easily as a home-security NVR and have local voice control satellites / speakers / sensors (for example as easily as Reolink home security systems) effectively giving you the same power as #chatgpt / #alexa / #siri etc but totally local to your home? I feel like something like this could be the next big evolution for #HomeAssistant

Yesterday I got a little bit hyperfocused on designing a little #electronics kit that allows you to build seven segment displays out of these individual 1-segment #pcb 's which you solder together using the castellated edges. Each strip would feature 7 reverse mount sk6812 mini-e #rgb leds (for easy soldering) and the whole thing would be daisychainable. #maker friends, please tell me all the reasons this would be a horrible idea before I waste a ton of money ordering parts and PCBs :)

@nprofile…p434 also, I just ran the numbers - I would actually pay more just for just myself in national insurance in the UK than I pay for "private" health care for my whole family here in Europe, my wife would have to pay for her own national insurance. So we recieve better care here and we're better off financially because of it.

2024-12-28 12:47:57 UTC

- reply

@nprofile…p434 just FYI - I have never paid anything at a hospital or dentist, it all goes via the health insurance. Also all the costs are standardised by the government so there is no price gouging like they have in the US. My child was seen within five minutes of landing in A&E and in surgery within an hour. When my appendix went kaput I had to wait three hours just to be seen by triage.

@nprofile…p434 I'm British and you also have massive waiting lists, ambulances queuing to drop off patients (my neice is a paramedic), dental care that consistently fails to deliver, hospitals that are crumbling under the weight of demand. On top of that, unless you are "poor" you pay for your "free" NHS through national insurance contributions. I've experienced both systems and I much prefer the Dutch system.

2024-12-28 12:39:36 UTC

I was just searching for some random info and landed on a little blog that had that winter snow effect people used to do in the early days of the web. It made me smile inside :) https://tadeubento.com/2024/esp32-s2-mini-review-and-esphome-notes/

We just did our annual review of our health insurance. We paid €2000 for a family of five. and used €6202 worth of healthcare with €600 in out of pocket expenses. This included dental checkups for the whole family, my adhd diagnosis and a bunch of medication between myself and my wife who has a thyroid condition. This is how #healthInsurance should work. #Netherlands

I have #ollama working on my Windows machine and talking with my #HomeAsssistant install on my Windows machine and it’s kinda ok. Need to refine some device names and be careful about what I expose but it’s sorta working. Lots of weird quirks like it wouldn’t recognise my desk lamp when i say “turn off the lights” because its type was a plug and not a light (it’s connected to a smart plug). That was easy to work around but it’s going to be a mighty effort to extend this beyond my office.

@nprofile…y59q I'm currently experimenting with an AHT20 which seems to be far more stable and acurate and I can get ten for 10 EUR on Ali. That said, for what I'm doing I only really need an approximation for the purpose of tracking the general ambience around the house over time. So with the offset the DHT22's might be "enough" even if they aren't good.

2024-12-06 14:11:20 UTC

- reply

@nprofile…7h0d Eugh the fat fingered typo monster strikes again. It was 10°c but yeah they’re definitely far from accurate (although I think perhaps a lot of this is caused by the esp8266 heating up because I’m giving it 5v instead of 3.3 and generating a lot of extra warmth in the enclosure). I’m going to look into sleeping the ESP between reading to reduce the heat.

2024-12-06 11:59:08 UTC

Doing a science. I have two DHT22’s in an enclosure with different amounts of ventilation and a “more accurate” AHT20 hanging free nearby, hopefully so that I can figure out what the offset for the plugs should be to get them into a sane ballpark.
So far the AHT20 temperature is registering almost 20°c lower but the humidity is 10% higher! I’ll share some graphs once I have some more data in the bag! #esphome

I really need two desks... one for computers stuff and one for maker stuff. It's so annoying trying to get day job stuff done when I'm surrounded by the fun stuff that I would much rather be doing :)

@nprofile…tcva I’m really surprised nobody has created a simple drag and drop firmware creation tool… like you select your microcontroller and supported sensors, make virtual wire connections to indicate pins and then it pukes out some yaml (in fact, I bet you could just generate a text description based on the gui and pipe it through ChatGPT to get working yaml!). Any #eshome #webdev nerds wanna take this idea and run with it?

@nprofile…nuws I have a BME680 on hand too so I might try throwing one of those into an enclosure and seeing how it performs versus the much cheaper DHT22 ($2 versus $20 dollars)

@nprofile…nuws this was super interesting - I added some ventilation to the front of the enclosure and positioned the sensor beneath the ESP. As you can see in the diagram your setup (03) performs much closer to my "trusted" sensor out of the box. Only about five degrees though, so I will still need to use offsets to get it "right". Interestingly, it's also closer in humidity too. 02 and 03 are right next to each other in the same double socket (01 is in a different room).

@nprofile…nuws I have knocked up a quick revision to the design with improved air flow from the front so I can test your theory!

@nprofile…nuws I'm still figuring out the intricacies of that right now. I'm testing some different versions of the enclosure as well as positioning of the sensor, but I'm currently seeing that they have about a +10ºc difference on temperature from my "reliable" sensor nearby and a good negative 10-15% difference on humidity.

V3 case versus V2 (this time printed less aggressively and using the new scarf seams feature in #PrusaSlicer alpha). Going to monitor stats for the next few hours to see if there is much of a difference in performance. Have a feeling I might need to add some more ventilation though.

@nprofile…tl87 if you scroll up the thread you can see how it works. There is a usb wall wart embedded in the case and a “raw” usb connector plugged in with its power and ground cables connected directly to the power pins on the esp8266.

New revised case. Refined to reduce the dimensions and I now have front to back M3 screws to hold the halves together. I think I also want to change up the ventilation (might go for top slits instead of hexagons). I can’t decide if I want to put in a better mechanism for holding the electronics or keep it looser and more flexible.

@nprofile…5g3a it needs to be “permanent unless I need to get to the insides”. I definitely don’t want it randomly falling off if you look at it wrong like it does now 😂

@nprofile…vkqm I’m aware of that one. You can’t see it very well but I have attempted to put the microcontroller into its own little case which vents heat away from the sensor as much as possible. I’m also planning to add more ventilation to the enclosure itself once I settle on a final design. I’ve also added an offset value to esphome so I can hopefully negate this somewhat too!

My first prototype of the #esphome plug-in temperature/humidity sensor is done. All works and looks ok but it’s a little chunky. I definitely have some space to slim it down in v2. Need to figure out how to make the two halves lock together. Any thoughts #makers ?
